Tips for a career with an upward linear graph - Debby Sharma Reporting

Are you new to SL? Have you got your avatar ready? If not, follow the link below this article, it would help you get your personalised avatar for free, be it mesh or non-mesh. The link would also help gather a few lindens through various means like contests, sploders, and money chairs etc. which are enough to cover your initial expenses for clothing etc. But soon you would realize the need for a home, mesh outfits, furniture, dreams and more which would need a regular flow of income to sustain them.

Most businesses encourage the residents to explore the first 30 days of joining Second Life. There are a few businesses who would hire in your first month, but those are either very rare to find or if you could convince which is equally rare. So where to start?

Photograph Credits: Google Search

Step 1: Applying for a job
Like in real life, there are various places where one can search for jobs. Here are the few places that I am sure to look at when I start searching. A few conventional methods and few are non-conventional ones. They are:
·         Job Agency
·         Inworld Employment community forum
·         Social Media
·         Classifieds

Job Agency
Job Agencies are the best place to look for job. Jobs for hosts, Djs, managers and sometimes escorts are very easily found. Sometimes other jobs like a sales manager, store models etc. are also available. One can click on the advertisement board to receive an application and a landmark. Fill in the application to the detail and send to the residents mentioned.  If your dream job is not listed during a specific time period at the agency, you may also join their group and look out for them in future. Agencies and their landmarks have been listed below:

Photograph Credits: Second Life Search

In-world Employment community forum
It is the best place to look for a job. Not only it is best and a free method used for applicants seeking a job but also the employers, managers and business owners looking for efficient staff. If you are looking for employment in-world, here is the link: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/Inworld-Employment/bd-p/InworldEmployment. Under the Commerce section in the community forum, there is another head called the “wanted” forum. Apart from employment, if you think you possess some other skills, like web designing, graphic designers etc., something that you are good in real life as well, you may post your resume and employee seekers or business associates would contact you. Your link here: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/Wanted/bd-p/Wanted

Social Media
With the advent of Social Media in our real lives, Second Life is too not behind in having groups and forums for people seeking job. It is another good source of free advertising for wanted staff. Even when we are busy in our real lives, social media is something we carry with us all the time, thanks to the technology development and mobile phones. This means, we can search for jobs and look out for and apply mostly via google forms and sometimes via notecards. Here are a few links that might help.
Facebook links:
Metabiz search list

Classifieds
Whenever you open the search results for Second Life, you would find a list of classifieds on the right side column which shows results based on your Second life searches. These will teleport you directly to the clubs, businesses that are seeking staff where you can apply.

Professional Tips:
·         Save a notecard in your inventory to record your resume. As you progress, you will shift from many jobs. Hence, make a list of the Business name, your job position, and your employer’s name, date of joining and date of leaving, reason for leaving the job.
·         You may save a folder in your inventory consisting of all the applications you have applied for from the start. Although, it is not mandatory, however, it is recommended. For example I had applied and worked for Malibu Nights Club. It was the first club. After a year, there was an opening again for the same club. When I was hired, I mentioned that to the owners, they were so pleased that they offered me to a job to its sister concern on the first day itself.
·         Maintain good relations with your employers. This helps in two ways, first, if a new job requires a reference, your employer is the best choice, and second, the new employer may or may not verify about you from your previous employers. Just because you have left your last employer’s job that does not mean you can’t be good friends with them. For example, I had worked for Kylie Brimmer for 2 years through her 2 clubs. After, I moved on from the clubbing industry, she is still a good friend who helps when I am in need and I help her whenever she needs.
·         Aim for a professional career with stability instead of a being a rolling stone. It is important that while you have a job, you show stability with a job. Like real life, every job requires training and no employer would want their investment not earning any returns. Employers do not like people who would just receive training and take off after a short period of time. The point of stability is rated high in the eyes of your new and old employer.

General Tips:
·         If you are applying for the first time or not, make sure that while filling the application form, you write why you are the one who is best fitted for the job. Talk about your skills and how good are you at commitments and team work. These words matter a great deal than usually apprehended.
·         Be Truthful.
·         Real life happens. Tell your employer about your absence, if possible prior or else later. Don’t be afraid to let them know the reason. We all understand as we have been there too.
·         Remember that there are real people behind the avatars. Yes, it is a game. But if you are looking for a job try to be involved and give your commitment.
·         Be friendly, polite and never get involved in drama. Sometimes, it is very difficult to stay out of it. Still, if you have a problem at your job with any staff or customer, never be rude to them instead take the matter to your employer. Make a notecard and copy-paste the chat that bothered you and ask your employer for guidance. Remember, only your employer has the right over you with respect to your job. The same is true for others.
·         Above all, find something that you love to do. A passionate work can always motivate you leading to betterment of all. Most of all, if you love something, you will find it fun to do. After all everyone has come for a enjoyment in this life. So have fun.

Fashion Highlight: Envious; A Bit of Goth, a little Fancy, Sometimes a Mix -Becca Drascol Reporting

Style & Something that's "you"

When looking for fashion in SL, I like to look for outfits and shoes that make my av look like I want her to. A style and personality that says a lil real life me, a lil fantasy...she becomes what I wish.  I like a bit of goth, a little fancy, sometimes a mix. One designer I really like the style of, is Envious.  From something on the riskier edge of hot to a bit classier, I can easily say Envious has variety.

Envious Main Store:

With an inworld store as well as marketplace you're free to shop whichever is your preferred way. I personally am a MP shopper, but when I stopped at the Envious mainstore I found the setting a large but cozy feeling. I liked the layout of the store, as well as the fountain out in the open area surrounding. To shop Envious via MP here’s the store link

To shop inworld you’ll find the main store here:  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Sim%20Style/206/100/2503

Interview with Envious Owner/Creator SayaNicole Cuttita:

Becca Drascol:  Can you tell me a little about Envious and what inspired it?

SayaNicole Cuttita: Well envious started in 2008. Back then I couldn't really find clothes that completely fit my style or personality. So I started looking into creating my own clothing and Envious was born. So I guess you could say my own desire to be unique is what inspired Envious.

Becca Drascol: I ike that J What do you see happening with your fashion line this Fall?

SayaNicole Cuttita: oh wow, I honestly don't know lol I never really plan anything for Envious, I kind of just create something that matches my mood. Which is probably why I end up making Winter fashion in the middle of Summer lol. I'm kind of backwards.

Becca Drascol: Gotta do what works for you, seeing as fashion is about creation. I really appreciate this.

SayaNicole Cuttita: It's np :) you're popping my interview cherry haha.

Becca Drascol: Which would you say was easier for you, creating before Slink, Lola and other enhancements like mesh bodies or after?

SayaNicole Cuttita: Well I won't say that creating for the various mesh enhancements is difficult. It's just become extremely time consuming. I do miss SL before all the different bodies just from a creation stand point because it does take extra time to get new designs out when having to load different types of applier hud's, or rigging something to multiple different bodies. But some of them really have made SL look so much better. And appliers have become easier with the omega system being around, that cut down on a lot of time :)

Becca Drascol: Agreed, and I can totally see that from your viewpoint. Would you say any RL fashion inspired your style?

SayaNicole Cuttita: Oh definitely, I think RL Fashion inspires every creator in secondlife.

Becca Drascol: Of course. Would you say more  like Goth, Emo and Casual? Anything you feel made Envious style what it is?

SayaNicole Cuttita: Envious is definitely a reflection of myself. I tend to hop around a lot between all the styles goth, punk, preppy, you name it. While RL fashion does inspire a small portion  I think I get more inspiration from music. It puts you in a mood and you tend to portray that in your design. And if you've followed my designs you can probably tell what days I was listening to rock or pop music lol . (hopefully this answers your question I'm probably failing lol)

Becca Drascol: No, you’re fine. That's a great answer from the heart.

I found Saya to be delightful, witty and lighthearted, quite pleasant to talk with. A creator that put a piece of her own style and sense of fashion within SL through her own line of fashion. A dream of having something she desired in SL and making it come true. And it's this reporter's view that all fashion rather in the real world or our virtual one, is a passion and style of each creator's own. A passion and style that makes it easy for us shopping to make ourselves into whatever we wish. To have a look that not only supports a creator's desire to have their fashion out there, but allows us all to express ourselves via what we wear and how we wear it. So for those of you looking for some good ole made from the heart fashion definitely check out Envious.

Art Auction: a fabulous farewell to Kylie Jaxxon Auction start: 2nd August 2015 Ends: 10th August 2015

Kylie Jaxxon's beautiful sim, The Trace Too, is closing at the end of August as she has departed SL. Kylie created a beautiful sim that has become special to many people. Kylie was an avid blogger and somehow managed to find the most beautiful trinkets to decorate her lovely sim, then shared them with the community.

In honour of Kylie and her gorgeous work that has touched the SecondLife community, there is an art auction at her sim to celebrate her talent, and wish Kylie a fabulous and final farewell:

The auction was originally intended to raise funds to keep her beautiful sim, The Trace, open until the end of August. Due to people's generosity this goal has already been achieved, what an amazing result!

With this in mind, all proceeds from the art auction will now go to Relay for Life in Kylie's honour. This group raises money for the American Cancer Society within SL and we think it would be a very special tribute to Kylie if we could donate as many lindens as possible to this fantastic cause on her behalf. This is our way of collectively saying thank you for all that she has done for the SecondLife community, and remembering her talent.

A bunch of talented and generous artists have donated original pieces to the auction, and all their work is available for you to look at around The Trace. Each pictures has been placed as close to the location they were shot as possible. Check every corner, boat  and deck to ensure that you don't miss any!

We really hope you'll join us to make this goodbye one of the best there has been in SecondLife.

Happy bidding!

Windows 10 and Second Life: A Match Made In Heaven? - Mackenzie Abbot Reporting

As you may or may not know from reading my personal blogs, I’ve been testing out Windows 10 after it downloaded on Thursday, the 30th of August (a day after it said it would).
So far, everything is still hunky dorey in my computing life.  My experience with Second Life hasn’t changed.  I’m still busy beavering away at the Second Life Enquirer, chasing up and writing articles and trying to keep Lanai sober enough to pay me for past work.  A lot of people have been a bit weary about upgrading to WX (as I like to call it) for a variety of reasons; in my experience, a lot of this stems around “will it work with my hardware?”, “Will it work with my drivers or will i need new ones?” and, of course “Will it work with SL?”
In my case, the answers are “yes, yes it’ll work with your existing setup and yes again” in that order.
I’ve tested it out on several viewers, including Firestorm (See video below), Catznip and Linden Labs own viewer and they all work as they should with no noticeable difference.

Video Player Another big concern, particularly among the DJ circles, is “Will SAM Broadcaster work on it?”
Well there have been cries of “NOOOO! it doesn't work on Windows 10! Windows 10 sucks ass!!!”
The reason behind this is the use of cracked or nulled versions of SAM.  Unless you have a legitimate copy with a legitimate serial, you’re going to run into problems.  I’m not going to judge or preach about piracy having used cracked copies myself until last Christmas, when my other half bought me a legit copy.  Again, in my experience, version 2014.7 works absolutely fine (see image below)
ScreenHunter_03 Aug. 01 16.49

Since upgrading to WX, I’ve noticed a few improvements in speed (unusual considering i have an i3 core processor and 10GB of RAM).  Things open a lot quicker and run smoother.  I’ve also noticed the distinct lack of “xxx has stopped responding” messages which, as I’m sure you’ll agree, is a huge plus.  However, there is something I can’t quite work out.  The audio from my USB headphones seem’s clearer, despite no changes to the driver itself.
But, by far, the biggest surprise for me was the speed of Microsoft Edge, the replacement for Internet Explorer.  By golly, that bitch moves!  It equals the speed of loading the BBC News website (http://bbc.co.uk/news) by milliseconds, there really is very little noticeable difference.  It’s like “POW!” and the website has loaded.  Microsoft seem to have finally come screaming into the 21ts century and developed the ideal Internet Explorer which is fast, slimmed down and instantly likeable to Chrome heathens like myself; something they should have done maybe 5 years ago.  Downloads now compare to Chrome in speed as well, downloading in seconds rather than days.
This article is by no means definitive and thorough, as you can see i’ve not even scratched the surface, but after all the kerfuffle of Windows 8 then 8.1, MS seem to have, at last, rejoined the world of enjoyable computing.  If you’re still unsure, back up your current setup, upgrade to WX (hey, it’s free after all) and then have a play.  Don’t like it?  Roll it back.  MS make this very easy to do and will still respect you in the morning.  You really do have nothing to lose except a few hours.
And it can’t be that bad surely?

The Lexi Project - July 26th, 2015 through till August 9th, 2015

It’s amazing how strangers come together as a community and help one family. Charities like Relay For Life of Second Life fundraising for Cancer, Feed a Smile fundraising for the children in Kenya or Join Hands fundraised for Nepal victims among others. The community of virtual worlds have always held each other’s hands to help the needy.

The Lexi Project is a shopping event fundraising for Lexi Zelin, a Second Life Resident. Other residents have not only come forward to donate items for sale, but few have also offered to donate their services like Djs, live singers and other performers are raising fund to help the cause. This doesn’t end here, Sim Designer, Serra Bellic has put a donation kiosk at her new designed sim, The Fly Project, accepting tips that would be donated straight to Lexi. Anyone can join the AngelRed Group to receive a donation kiosk. Lexi is also accepting personal donations to her main account. However, one may donate to TheLexiProject Resident.

Photography Credits: The Lexi Project

The Lexi Project has come to life with the efforts of Toxxic Rihannyr and Lexi Zelin, along with 360 other designers who have stepped up to help Lexi in any way possible. The event began on 26th July, 2015 and will go through till August 9th, 2015. On the first day of the event itself, the total donations raised was 1,063,592L$. Today, this event is on the Destination Guide. https://secondlife.com/destination/the-lexi-project . On the second day the total donations added up to 1,424,024L$, which is roughly $5806.07 USD. More designers are welcome to join in the parade by filling the designer sign up form mentioned at the bottom of the article.
Lexi Zelin (Heather Crawford), is 28 years old with a 6 year old daughter, was recently detected of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at Stage 3 (Cancer) on June 30th, 2015, after she underwent a surgery on June 23rd. In Second Life, she had been running a successful clothing store for the last 5 years, AngelRED Couture with 7500 return customers. She entered Gofundme on July 17th, 2015. About 38 people donated at Gofundme and raised $2870USD in 5 days before The Lexi Project started. She would be needing a total of $12000USD to fund her treatment.

Photography Credits: Gofundme

It is an amazing step put forward by so many people to help Lexi and her daughter, Astrid. Everyone is doing the little they can to help her. Such inspirations and community involvement somehow wipes the harsh reality of life. Sometimes, knowing such real life stories that make a difference brings a tear of pride. Such efforts are an example of what we can achieve together not only in virtual life but also in real life.

Fashion Highlight: Mesh Head clothing - Becca Drascol Reporting

Great Mesh & a Good Deal:

Mesh, along with Slink, Lola and other enhancements within SL are the big thing. Normally what’s in, means that you have a variety of choices but also a variety of price ranges and different fashion options. And rather you shop for mesh online via SL Marketplace, or inworld via the store, you can find many designers with great fashion. But if it’s great biker/rocker mesh and a good deal you’re looking for, I completely recommend Mesh Head. The main store is not only large with tons to select from, but has affordable prices which is always a thumbs up to me. One feature I like of this store is, a non-demo item will receive a refund if you are unhappy with the fit. This is a bonus when dealing with mesh clothing. Unlike some people I rarely ever will change my shape to work with an outfit. You can find the main store here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Elara/13/159/24
And for shopping via marketplace you can find Mesh Head here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/103109

It was while at the main store inworld that I chose to inspect the sales floor conveniently reached by teleporter. Plenty of designs can be found on the sales floor for 60 L. This makes a girl so very tempted to spoil herself or loved ones with some awesome mesh. I also took note of at least two free mesh clothing in the sale area. For sure not only tempting but well worth it.

Interview with creator FrancescoCarrera Resident:

Becca Drascol: First tell me a little about Mesh Head and the inspiration behind it

FrancescoCarrera Resident: Have been doing it for over 2 years now, when the mesh clothing was introduced into SL I thought I'd give it a go, I'm a designer RL so was easy enough to do nice textures in Photoshop. I'm a bit of a rocker RL so thought I'd supply stuff that I like myself to the rockers and bikers of SL. It's quite a large target audience in here so as long as I make nice stuff I figured people would buy it. I keep my prices affordable to everybody which helps me sell a lot and people get good clothes at a reasonable cost without having to break the bank.

Becca Drascol: What trends do you see coming up for Fall?

FrancescoCarrera Resident: I don't really do seasonal stuff, I just make whatever comes into my head at that moment in time. I guess Autumnal colours would be the standard earth tones and stuff like that, maybe warmer outfits.

FrancescoCarrera Resident: You’re always safe with black and skulls for bikers and rockers.

Becca Drascol: Right.

Becca Drascol: Do you think there's something that makes your designs stand out from other designers that do biker/rocker looks?

FrancescoCarrera Resident: I try to be different in my range of clothes but I don’t really look at other designers stuff, I like to make sure my textures are sharp and add little extras like detailed stitching and quality logos. I think that's more of a question for my customers, I just do my best and make sure they get a quality product at an affordable price.

Becca Drascol: Right. I actually took a moment to check out the sale floor while at the store, and was pleased to see such great clothes at affordable prices but also felt the normal prices were comfy.

FrancescoCarrera Resident: I'm glad you think so. I add to the sale room now and again, that's older stuff from when I first started. I like to think all the newer stuff is a little better as things develop.

Becca Drascol: Lola enhancement has become a big thing in SL, do your see yourself adding the applier to you female line?

FrancescoCarrera Resident: Not sure, it's something I've thought about but not got around to it yet. Maybe the new mesh avis have made the Lola add-on redundant so I'm kind of one the fence on that one.

Becca Drascol: Understandable and perhaps something that is a little unique to you.

Becca Drascol: I want to thank you so much for taking the time to talk with me and ask if you have anything special you would like to add?

FrancescoCarrera Resident: Not really, I can answer more questions of you wish but I'm good so far :)

Becca Drascol: Oh yes, I did want to ask if the main store is the only location right now?

FrancescoCarrera Resident: I have satellite stores around SL, maybe 5 or 6.

Becca Drascol: Very nice.

FrancescoCarrera Resident: Not too many though, it's a lot of work keeping them up to date.

Becca Drascol: Do you ever or have you sponsored clubs or other venues?

FrancescoCarrera Resident: Yeah I do quite a few, send gift card and stuff. I sponsor Autism Awareness and Relay for Life also.

Becca Drascol: That's wonderful.

Becca Drascol: And if one were looking to get gift cards how would they go about that?

FrancescoCarrera Resident: I need to update to electronic gift cards but again haven't got around to it so I basically hand out textures that are Trans, when the winner of the event gives the card back to me with a notecard of what they want then I hand over the items. Old way of doing it but that’s all I have at the moment.

Becca Drascol: I think it's about what works for the creator, I'm sure a lot of time effort and hard work goes into the creation of the fashion itself.

FrancescoCarrera Resident: Yep, that’s the way I think also.

Becca Drascol: Again thank you so much for taking this time to talk with me.

The Overall Experience:

Not only did I have a pleasant time window shopping and looking around the inworld store, it was pleasant to talk with Mesh Head’s creator. He was easy to talk with, down to Earth and genuinely loves creating mesh. Next time you guys and gals of SL want to shop for a biker/rocker look with style and budget friendly, get on over to Mesh Head.
