Spotlight on The Edge; A New Addition to Windlight Magazine

Windlight Magazine features Art in Second Life and has quickly become one of the hottest cultural magazines available for the art enthusiasts of Second Life. The Edge is a new fashion reporting division in WM which features articles by Eleseren Brianna. She is a seasoned Model with an eye for fashion. Some of the article you will find showcase top fashion designers, new releases, jewelry, accessories, what’s in season, fashion shows and more.

The SL Enquirer caught up with Eleseren Brianna to learn more about her passion for fashion, The Edge and what to expect in upcoming features.

Interview with Eleseren Brianna

Hi Eleseren, congratulation on becoming a new addition to Windlight Magazine and for all your accomplishments in Second Life’s fashion Industry. Can you tell our readers about your background as a model and how it has impacted your Second Life?

Eleseren: Hi Lanai, I have been a model now for 3 years. I did my first model training basically so that I could make better vendor pictures for my store (Romance Couture which has now closed). What hooked me more and more about modeling was the creativity of it. It can be a performance art in a runway context, and a visual art when presenting fashion in an image. Styling itself is hugely creative, especially when doing 'out of the box' experimental stylings. SL has always been a creative outlet for me, ever since I rezzed in early 2009 and modeling has become a major facet of that.

Fashion comes in a wide variety of styles and trends. What are some of the things you like to do to keep up with the world of Fashion and how often it changes?

Eleseren: I follow Fashion in SL and in RL. In RL I like to keep abreast of the Fashion Weeks which showcase the seasonal collections of the major designers. I follow a lot of magazine, designer and styling facebook pages, which constantly keep me updated, and I of course love to treat myself to glossy magazines like Vogue for instance. In SL I check out as many Events as I can manage to get around and often follow up new designers who catch my eye. I also love to see people's blogs and flickr.

With Mesh being on the top of Trends in SL Fashion, do you have any tips for our readers who might feel a bit apprehensive about converting to mesh avatars, clothing and accessories?

Eleseren: Mesh has been around now for over 4 years and I think most avatars have probably at least experimented with it. It does initially take a bit of getting used to as it is so different from system clothing (having to hide parts of your body to wear it for instance).

Mesh accessories are probably the easiest way to begin to experiment with mesh, and there are lots of wonderful designs now, exploiting the superb modeling and texturing potentials inherent in mesh.

Mesh clothing isn't too hard to try either, just remember to wear the alpha's provided. You will find it hard to layer mesh over mesh, unless you are expert and experiment, as mesh will break through mesh, so I would avoid this as a beginner. There are lots of designs around though so you will have plenty of choice to find your own style.

Mesh bodies are definitely the most challenging to get to grips with, the huds can be terrifying at first, with their myriad of alpha 'cuts' to select (the mesh body is mapped out in areas which can be selected to turn alpha, to meet the demands of lots of different mesh clothing). Huds also enable other options, like adding tattoos and a form of system clothing applied to the mesh, plus things like skin sheen and sometimes even whether you want nipples or not! I do recommend persevering with learning the huds, perhaps with a help of a friend as mesh bodies definitely are a visual improvement over the default SL avatar body. You can have elegantly molded limbs, beautiful natural looking shoulders (and other parts!) and clothing looks wonderful on a mesh body (it looks tons better in photos too). Remember though, if you get a mesh body you will not be able to wear your old system clothing with it.

If you are not yet ready for a mesh body then get mesh hands and feet, which are simpler but vastly improve your overall finish. I even wear mesh ears for the same reason. As for mesh heads, they are ubiquitous now but I haven't succumbed yet. I don't want to be a clone and until mesh heads are truly moddable by the SL sliders I won't get one. However, that is me, and I will say there are more and more beautiful mesh heads out there, and more and more makeup and skins made for them.

We’ve come across dated avatars who don’t understand how vital alpha layers are to wearing mesh, can you explain why it is necessary and worth the effort to try it?

Eleseren: Alpha layers in essence make parts of your default avatar body invisible. They are vital for mesh clothing as mesh is not made to your exact sliders, and it doesn't change shape in the exact way your sl avatar changes shape when you move around. You cannot just try and pick a size big enough to wear over your avatar body, you will just look huge and there will still be problems.  Without wearing the alpha the mesh will constantly 'break' and look full of holes or ragged (it doesn't actually break, it dips inside your avatar body). If you wear an alpha you make the parts of your body underneath the mesh clothing invisible, so avoid the mesh breaking. Wearing the alpha which comes with the mesh clothing means you will achieve the smooth and perfect look that the designer intended. One word of warning here though, which has caught me out occasionally. Some designers now sell mesh clothing only for mesh bodies..with no alpha included..so check any mesh clothing you buy is also for 'Classic Avatar'.

You certainly know a lot about trends and the fashion industry in SL, and now you will be writing about Fashion for Windlight Magazine. Can you tell me about The Edge?

Eleseren: The Edge has a mission to explore and represent the most creative facets of SL Fashion and modeling, and especially the most creative styling and fashion imagery in SL. As part of its general remit I do cover aspects of RL fashion, designers and trends for instance, but I will be focusing primarily on SL. I have a team of Edge Stylists who will be showcasing their styling and photography skills (both in the magazine, but also in other opportunities that arise as part of the Edge's wider work, promoting creativity in Fashion and Styling. The Edge has a section of the Windlight website and our Stylists can link their blogs to it, plus it covers other issues and features as they arise.

The Edge will be represented at Burn2 in the Autumn and there are other exciting projects in the pipeline. The Edge has also opened a Gallery, the first (I believe) in SL which features fashion and styling imagery. Fashion is an art in itself (at least an Applied Art and I think it can go beyond that, as shown by some well known RL designers like Alexander McQueen), and I am very happy that John Herring who owns Windlight had the vision to include a voice for it within the Windlight Magazine.

Why do you think fashion is so popular in Second Life?

Eleseren: Fashion is popular in SL I think for the same reason Fashion is popular in RL..it is a way of expressing and making visible our personalities and identity. It is a way of making ourselves look (and feel) more attractive and confident. It can be a way of making a statement or feeling part of a group of people we identify with. It can be used to seduce or intimidate even..there are so many facets to Fashion, whether that is in SL or RL. Plus, we can have perfect ever youthful bodies here and wear the things we would love to but dare not in RL!

What are your favorite topics to cover?

Eleseren: I think I have alluded to them really in previous questions. My focus is to showcase the creativity in SL Fashion, and its related spheres of modeling, styling and imagery. I write about topics but also cover designers, competitions and trends.  My articles reflect my own personal interests related to this, but also pick up on wider issues in SL.

What can readers expect to see in upcoming issues?

Eleseren: More of the above! I don't plan months ahead and I am not formulaic in what I cover, ideas form organically and get covered.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Eleseren: The Edge is still growing in its concept and I am continually open to developing it in new directions. For instance I will be running styling seminars on the Windlight sim as part of the Edge fairly soon, and hope to explore the interaction of art and fashion in other ways as time goes on. The Edge isn't an agency, it is not a school, and it doesn't claim to be a full magazine in itself..its a Project, a Collective, and a platform to push the most creative aspects of SL Fashion, styling, modeling and fashion imagery.

GeekSpeak SL - If you could design bacteria what would you make? Join the Discussion April 2nd at 12pm SLT

Last week scientists managed to make bacteria with a 'minimal genome', only 473 genes.

If we can now design bacteria what options would you add to the minimal genome?  What do you think bacteria should be doing?

Do you think the first organisms were like these minimal bacteria?  Would they have been even simpler?  Where did the first forms of life come from?  Why do we not see several different 'trees of life' on Earth?  Why did it apparently only happen once?  Or could there be completely different forms of life hidden somewhere for us to discover?

Come and discuss life as we (don't) know it at GeekSpeak today.

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE HEARTS HEAVEN BALLROOM- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

Heart's Heaven Ballroom

For many, Second Life is an escape from the daily stressors of the real world and for others it is their opportunity to live as normal of a life as they possibly can due to medical conditions, and terminal illness.
People connect and interact from the inside out and most of the time leave their real life problems at the door, stepping into a virtual world with freedom to explore their greatest imaginations.

Heart’s Heaven Ballroom is a testament to the strength and courage of one woman who fought hard until the very end. Her Second Life was a way to find happiness and share it with others when her health prevented her from living life the way most of us take for granted.
Heartlite Jewel was a member of our Second Life community who spent her time creating a romantic ballroom where visitors can come dance and enjoy the atmosphere. When it was here time to depart this world, her wish was for Heart’s Heaven to continue on. Her dear friend Lynn Washborne continues her memory by carrying on Ms. Jewel’s dream.

Lynn Washborne

Interview with Lynn Washborne

Hi Lynn, I would like to give my condolences for the loss of your friend. Can you share with our readers who Heartlite Jewel was and how you met?

Lynn: Thank you. I met Heartlite in Heart in the 2008. She was introduced to me by a Friend. He told me she was someone that needed help with the sim. And threw my name to her. He sent me a Landmark and that was when I started as a General Manager for heart. To me Heartlite was a person that if she knew of someone that needed help she would be the one to help. Or if someone needed just someone to talk to she wanted to be the one to help.

When was Heart’s Heaven Established? Where you a part of its beginnings?

Lynn: I think heart's Heaven was Established in 2006 – 2007. I was not there to help her in the earlier days. I came later, as a General Manager.

What was Heartlite’s vision for Heart’s Heaven Ballroom when it was time for you to take over?

Lynn: To Keep Hearts Heaven open for people to come on down and enjoy and have a great time.

Having an illness is not easy, but Ms.Jewel still worked very hard on Heart’s Heaven Ballroom. Can you tell us about this venue and how you are keeping it going in her memory?

Lynn: I've kept the name of the ballroom. And we also put up an memorial so people can go up there and visit.

Heartlite Jewel Memorial

Have you made any changes to the original venue?

Lynn: Yes, We did change the music. We are allowing more kinds of music, from Jazz, rock, soft rock, pop. Soon we are going to start having contests. We also changed up the venue, but it's still open didn’t want to put walls up I liked the open look on the water

Ballroom

What type of events do you host?
Lynn: I don’t host. RL gets the best of me. But there are times I do try to DJ, but i don’t have set times.

Are you currently hiring?
Lynn: yes! We are Hiring. We are looking for Host's and Dj's

In keeping Heartlite Jewel’s memory alive, can you tell us what your hopes are and how people can help keep this venue going strong?

Lynn: well we would like to see more people coming to the ballroom, that was Hearts big thing always trying to get people into the ballroom. It will always be free to everyone to come hang out, dance and meet new people. We are open to any suggestions to as what you (Readers) would like to see in a venue.

BALLET PIXELLE PRESENTS "ARCHIDANCE" AN ORIGINAL BALLET- Sunday March 27th 5pm SLT

􀀀

Ballet Pixelle® will reprise an original ballet, “Archidance”, opening Sunday, March 27 at 5:00 pm

An Open Preview will be presented for Ballet Pixelle members and subscribers on Wednesday, March 23rd at 5:00 pm 2016.  "Archidance" was first performed in 2011.  Music is by Emmy-award winning composer Kurt Bestor.

In Ballet Pixelle's continuing exploration of the similarities, differences, and interactions of digital, virtual, and physical movement and dance, we have simplified movement into its basic architecture.  And brought digital, virtual, and physical dance together in one ballet.

How is dance constructed?  What is its architecture?  Form, color, shape?  Moving steps, turns, jumps?  High, slow, and medium height movements?  Sharp, flowing, dropping movement?  Let's look at the present, past, and future of dance and see how one influences the other.

First, we look at these influences and notation of a current ballet.

Then we see key figures in the construction of dance through the ages, including physical dancers mixed with our virtual dancers.

Finally, working with spheres, cubes, and triangles, we can see animated dancers -- who are not real people at all -- and then our virtual dancers who are real people all over the world -- Canada, England, Estonia, Japan, Portugal, Spain, and all time zones of the United States and Hawai`i, dancing together in the future of the art.  What are the similarities?  What are the differences?

Join us for an evening of mind-bending thought and an homage to dance.  Leave the theatre wondering...   Discussions following all performances.

Performances take place on Sundays at 5:00 pm and Wednesdays at 5:00 pm at the Ballet Pixelle Theater:

􀀁

Come early because seats fill quickly.

Ballet Pixelle® is the first performing ballet company in the virtual global community Second Life.  Says the Company's founder, Inarra Saarinen, “As artistic director of the Company since its inception, I have enormous pride in Ballet Pixelle™.  Our goal is to investigate and explore the interaction and intersection of physical and virtual dance.  We are excited to celebrate the future of dance.  We are dancing into the digital future!”

Members of Ballet Pixelle come together from all over the world, Japan, Europe, and North America.  Animations are created by Inarra Saarinen and put into dance phrases.  There are no artificial synchronizing devices and the dancers truly perform dancing with each other and the music.  Each performance is truly live and unique, and takes advantage of the characteristics of Second Life to extend the art of the ballet in new directions.

Great Ways to Spend Passover - Sundown Friday April 22- Sundown Saturday April 30th

Every faith has holidays that are family oriented and so it is with the faith of the Jewish people. Passover is a time of tradition and religious symbolism that is a vital part of the life and faith of a people dating back to approximately 1300 BCE. With over 3300 years of history, you can see just how important it is to bring this Passover history to your family story to continue a faith that is an integral part of your very being. This year, find great ways to spend Passover with your children to emphasize just how important this holiday is to you.

Gather with Friends and Family for the Seder Meal

In today’s world, many of the Jewish faith are not as ‘faithful’ as they once were. It is the same in most world religions and that’s why there is a cry for coming back to the faith of their fathers. Modern Jewish families often celebrate only nominal holidays, with Passover being one of the most important. If you haven’t been raised with strict adherence to kosher foods, a true-to-form Seder dinner would be one of the best things you can do for your children.

This year, Passover begins at sundown Friday, April 22 and ends at sundown on April 30. The first night, the night of the primary Seder meal, is celebrated on that first night. Why not invite as many friends and family members as you can so as to be truly symbolic of that time of passing over to the land of plenty?

Whether you need to investigate Jewish travel so as to only be ‘on the road’ at approved times or are inviting others to your home, make the Seder meal a focal point of your eight day holiday.

Take Time off Work for a Memorable Passover Vacation

When looking for places to go for the Passover holiday, it is always best to talk to a travel agent such as Leisure Time Tours that specialize in Jewish travel. Bearing in mind that certain things can only be done during daylight hours, you will want to find a travel agent who understands common practices in the Jewish faith. Instead of taking your annual vacation in the summertime, why not take eight days off during Passover to visit places that you wouldn’t ordinarily go? Not only can you teach your children about their faith, but you can also get a better appreciation for the faith you were born into.

It is an unfortunate state of affairs in today’s society that so many have fallen away from the traditions of their ancestors. Being a person of faith doesn’t mean you need to live a drab, unexciting lifestyle. This year, find great ways to celebrate Passover with the entire family and get back to a life that you were meant to live. You will find it an enriching experience whether you visit Jerusalem or a local synagogue steeped in ritual. There is no reason not to find ways to spend Passover that are both fun as well as religious in flavor.

GeekSpeak SL: Are we justified in spending money on space? Join the Discussion Saturday, March 19th at 12pm SLT

There are so many unsolved problems on earth.  Should we fix those first before we attempt to go to space?  Or will space exploration save mankind?

Some think that no money or time should be spent on space while there are people in need here.  How much are we going to waste before we realise that Earth is our only home?

Others think that we will gain a lot from going to space.  There are mineral resources out there that we could use and space exploration will encourage an interest in science.  We should spread out into the universe.  Faith in a future for our species on all the planets of the galaxy may be what we need to put things right down here.

If we cancel space programs will other countries take over?  Or private companies?  Maybe we should leave it to them.

Introducing the New Heart's Heaven Ballroom in Memory of Heartlite Jewell

Heart's Heaven Ballroom is a little contemporary ballroom. We play music from love classics, Jazz, Blues, Classic Rock, Rock and pop. All are welcome. We are also going to be starting events and have a Trivia ball set up for entertainment.

This is a formal and semi-formal wear venue owned by the late Heartlite Jewell.  This venue was her baby that kept her going. It was her life.

Mrs. Jewell put up a big fight with her illness but ultimately her health declined. she always  fought hard to stay as long as she did.  She would always say keep my ballroom going.. so we did and made few changes.

.

Visit us, enjoy the atmosphere and help us keep Mrs. Jewell's memory alive.
