An exhibition “Beautiful Bizarre” highlights 12 renowned artists, trying to fathom out the reasons influencing the unconventional charm usually comprehended as abnormal. Consistently returning to issues of vision and perception the authors inspect the nature of distressing emotions and feelings. One of the halls of DaphneArts Gallery is devoted solely to the unique sculpture crafted by virtuoso Theda.

 

DaphneArts is a virtual art complex named after the Greek myth of Apollo and Daphne. The atmosphere here is both breathtaking and provoking deep thoughtfulness, calling for a serious contemplation on the artworks. Spaces created specially for comfortable conceptual consideration of the exclusive works will make you come back again and again, discovering new details in familiar pieces of art. It’s also worth of admitting that classical music playing at the site helps to “turn on, tune in, and drop out”.      

The exhibition features 12 2D objects and one 3D sculpture and is already been open for more than two month. I admitted many artists among attendances looking for inspiration. Guests can be found hypnotized by highlights of an attractive object, which they truly admire. The atmosphere of intimacy can be regarded as a big advantage of DaphneArts. The works call attention to the tension between beauty and bizarreness, attracting, therefore, those, who got accustomed to ambivalent perceptions. One can be gazing at the Loki’s masterpiece named “Vicariously” for hours. In case if you fell in love with “Eyes Unseen” by Paradox Messmer, you can buy it just for 296 L. However, “Tarantula” by Sabbian Paine or “There’s nothing left to take” by Rainbow Mubble could have caused some blood-curdling screams in those who are too impressionable. Turbulence and gradient of emotions can definitely come to their climax while staring at “Deceitful Beauty” created by Angelica Corral.  

Theda’s “beauty in strange feelings” can be undoubtedly called the hidden pearl of the exhibition. Renaissance backgrounds with photorealistic layers cause an effect of burdening mix of emotions, thoughts, and excitements left unspoken. It feels like there’s some hidden message you are ready to catch, which is missed all the time. Is it true that in order to form imaginary ideal identity one rejects the parts of self that are inconvenient or incongruent with the identity he/she choose to accept? How’s is it like to conform to the standards of beauty? There’s nothing surprising that the artwork can hit some hidden stereotypes living at the ceiling of our souls.  

The sculpture work “Bizarre is always beautiful” by Theda displayed at the separate red hall stimulates another flood of experiences one is left to filter and consciously formulate after leaving the exhibition. Silhouettes levitating with a bunch of pieces will live your heart squeezing at the thought of beings suffering so cruelly. It clearly calls us to meditate on the Greek Myth of Appollo and Daphne and impossibility of love between perfect avatars.

Interview with Theda

Triuzla: How did you manage to showcase your works at the exhibition? Was there any open-call or a curator addressed directly to you?

Theda: Daphne owners asked me to do 1 2d work and 1 3d and gave me the theme.

Triuzla: Could you kindly tell us about the originating of "Beauty in strange feelings"? What was your mood and thoughts while creating it?

Theda: when I think about bizarre I see the beauty in it and all weird feelings a bizarre image can touch us. And I guess all my works are a bit bizarre. Well not sure if I can explain well, English is not my native language, as I am from Brazil. I tried to show how we are all bizarre in all our deep/hidden feelings and it can be beautiful too.

Triuzla: Sorry, I wish I could ask questions in Portuguese, but “Obrigado” is all I can say. Pre-last question. Did you take part at UWA 3D Art&Design Challenge?

Theda: no problem. I have a work at UWA for Immaterial show; it’s called “Ethereal”. I was thinking about immaterial, something I can't touch. I imagine the angels flying and their aura and good feeling they send, so I tried to show it with slowly movements. I am at LEA too. Triuzla: Oh yeah, I watched it patiently and saw a poem under the painting called “Bluebird”…

Theda: Oh “Bluebird” is an art installation I made inspired by Charles Bukowski 's poem... He is my favorite, because he is so bizarre. But my last installation is based on a singer ~Sainkho Namtchylak. I also like Sylvia Plath poems... colors of Pedro Almodovar films... It’s a mix!

Triuzla: My final question would be a technical one. Which software do you operate while working on your 3D and 2D pieces of art?

Theda: I work on Blender and for 2d I take pictures IW and manipulate them on Photoshop.

Triuzla: I am very grateful for your time. It was a pleasure to talk to you. Maybe you'll give any final advice for those, who come to watch your works?

Theda: hmmm… I try to show a soul behind the avatar. Thank you for your interest on my work.

Interview with Rysan Fall: From Machinima to Reality- LilyaLuv Reporting...

Rysan Fall is a machinima expert in Second Life. He has been making machinima since February 2008 and has since won awards and accolades for his work. We speak with Rysan Fall about the challenges of creating machinima on Second Life, his continued success, and his proudest project.

Would you mind telling us a bit about yourself and your work with machinima?

Machinima has been very good to me, and I am very grateful for everything it’s given me. I’ve been interviewed countless times, I’ve spoken at many lectures, events and universities. I’ve had the opportunity to work for Tufts University, University of Florida, and the University of Central Missouri. I’ve even been honored with filming the first Virtual College Graduation ceremony for Bryant Stratton College in Second Life featured on FOX National News.

One thing I was really excited about: I was contacted by U2's Principle Management to inform me that my U2inSL video was selected to be played on the big screen at the Glastonbury Festival in the U.K. as the REAL U2 perform their song, "Even Better Than the Real Thing". My visuals went through the approval processes from Linden Labs to me and finally approved by U2's Principle Management. That was really exciting for me.

I’ve been interviewed for the book, “Machinima: The Art and Practice of Virtual Filmmaking.”  

A few of my videos have been seen by a company called How2Connect.com (now called Acute Care Triage), which specializes in providing online therapy and EAP solutions for subscribers. They were in the process of creating their own virtual world at the time, and wanted someone to make their machinima for them. They flew me to California for a week and asked me to become a part of their team, and I accepted. After 4 years I, now edit all of their “Real Life” department  videos.

Along with all of this, I do voiceover work, also. I have also done some radio. I used to have a weekly hip hop news segment on an underground hip hop show called “The Fireset” on 90.7 WTCC. I've done voiceover work for CPTV Sports (Connecticut Public Broadcasting).  I won an award for best male voice over in an animated film in 2011 at the Los Angeles Media Awards for my role as “Sebastian,” a supercomputer from the future in “Time Travelers Series” Produced by Pooky Amsterdamn and Dr. James Canton.

Like I said machinima has been very good to me...it got me into the Institute for Advanced Media in Hartford, Connecticut; a year long internship at CPTV; I also won an emmy award for one of my productions in 2013 and was nominated for one the year after. I’ve just started working in the creative services department for FOX News in Connecticut.

What inspired you to create machinima?

This initially was intended to be practice for real life film making. When I started I had no idea there was a whole genre of filmmaking dedicated to filming in a virtual environment. But at first I thought that I could pick up some good editing tips using machinima.

Which machinima project are you most proud of?

I guess the one machinima I’m most proud of would be the “Invisible City”. Its an older video, a contest entry that dealt with the topic of homelessness. The submissions were shown live during a simul broadcast in Australia. I am proud of it because it came first place in the machinima competition and second place in the real life film competition. It was a great surprise because I kinda had to put it together last minute and I felt the quality wasn't as good as it could've been. I don't usually enter contests but I wanted to be involved with this one because of seriousness of the topic.

The Invisible City

What do you enjoy most about creating machinima in Second Life?

Creating films in Second Life is enjoyable because it gives the filmmaker the opportunity to make great special effects easily and inexpensively. I did mostly customer work in Second Life, so another enjoyable aspect of it for me was that I got to meet people from many different places around the world.

What has been the weirdest thing to happen to you while recording a machinima video?

Well, there's been so many strange instances during this amazing journey of second life machinima. But I guess the one of the weirdest times is when I got paid in advance for a video and the customer just disappeared when the time came to start filming. Still don't know what happened to them.

What is the most challenging aspect of creating machinima on SL?

In Second Life, the most challenging aspect is dealing with the limitation of the animations available. Its getting better. But when I when I stated, there wasn't a lot of good animations. People who have the money will pay to have custom animations.

What is your favorite type of machinima project that you like to work on?

I like working on projects that allow me to be creative as possible. There was a period of time where I did mostly wedding videos. Although I do appreciate my wedding customers very much, the weddings didn't allow me to really get creative due to the fact they all followed the same format.  The projects I like doing the most, are my own personal projects. Because I don't have any limits or have to answer to anyone when doing them.

What would you like to say to anybody who wants to create their own machinima movies?

I would tell the to take advantage of the great opportunity to able to do anything their minds come up with. The only thing that limits them is their imagination.

SILVER LEAF COLLEGE: NOW OPEN FOR CLASSES - Luc Fray Reporting...

A few weeks ago, a notice popped up in the Seeking RP group teasing a sim that would soon be coming to Second Life. Its theme was college role-play, a genre I’ve not yet tried in SL. Naturally, it piqued my interest and I couldn’t help but check out the link that came along with it.

The website was blank.

Thinking that it must be experiencing some bug or what, I contacted the person who posted the notice up, Aria Kenden, and she was kind enough to answer my questions regarding her role-play sim, Silver Leaf College. I ended up applying as one of the professors before the conversation ended.

Luc Fray: Ok, so how did you come up with the name Silver Leaf College, Ms. Kenden?

Aria Kenden: Well, My friend Devin and I pictured what type of atmosphere we wanted for the school, and we wanted a name to reflect that. We imagined a comfortable woodland feel and Silver Leaf College stuck.

Luc Fray: Devin is one of the co-creators of SLC, correct? Who else are the brains and hands behind the creation of the sim, and how hard was it putting the dream into action?

Aria Kenden: Yes, he is! Devin has been the biggest asset to SLC really. And his daughter, Lily, has helped with the landscaping. I wouldn’t say it was hard, but I will say a lot of time and money has been invested into the school already to make it what it is.

Luc Fray: Seems a lot of heart was poured into it. What made you guys decide to create this sim? Or rather, what gave you guys the inspiration?

Aria Kenden: We have a passion for teen role-play, in particular, the school setting. Most schools come and go or the ones that stay offer the same experiences. We wanted to create a safe but fun space for teens that is a bit out of the ordinary.

Luc Fray: Yeah, I saw on the website that Silver Leaf is a PG sim. Does that mean you guys won’t be tackling themes such as booze, drugs, sex, frat hazing, etc. as is usually prevalent in RL universities and colleges? *laughs*

Aria Kenden: Hmmm, not necessarily that they won’t be addressed, but rather we don’t encourage it. In the end, we know rules will be broken, and, from an OOC standpoint, as long as sexual RP is not performed, we are pretty lenient.

Luc Fray: Understood. I imagine that would be a problem since the students would be in the 16 to 18 age bracket….

So you guys are already open for enrollment and classes will start on the 19th. Is there a cut-off date for enrollment like in RL? And if so, when is that?

Aria Kenden: We’ve thought about it but decided to not have a cut-off date. As we grow, we want to welcome more students and don’t want to set a restriction. So even after classes begin, we will still accept students.

Luc Fray: What are some of the classes you guys offer?

Aria Kenden: We aren’t revealing the full list yet until classes begin, but, so far, we have the potential to start with sixteen. They include Art, Creative Writing, Drama, Health and Wellness, Norse Mythology: The Gods of the Vikings, Law, Media Ethics, Japanese, and South Park & Contemporary Issues.

Luc Fray: Wow, that’s a lot! Do you guys let the students choose the classes or do you enroll them all in them?

Aria Kenden: There are no sign-ups for classes, so there is no limit of attendants. Students can come and go as they please.

Luc Fray: Ah, so you guys are focusing the RP on story than actual classroom interaction and education. I may have gotten a little bit confused on that….

Does Silver Leaf have a main central plot to which individual characters’ stories would gravitate around?

Aria Kenden: No, not really. The only plot we have set in place is we are based on UK schools. Meaning, it’s called sixth form or college, for ages 16 to 18.

Luc Fray: At the core of it all, what basically is Silver Leaf College?

Aria Kenden: I’d have to say, it’s a place for teens to come together for RP and to make new friends. Yeah, there are classes and learning, but the interaction between all participants, students and teachers, is what makes it special.

Luc Fray: On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited are you for this?

Aria Kenden: Ha! Oh my God, it’s off the charts! Every day, since beginning plans, I've been telling Devin how excited I am about it. So I’d say, at least a 12!

Luc Fray: *laughs* Aside from being Admin, you are playing a student here too, right? Tell us a little about your character.

Aria Kenden: Yes, I am playing a student. My character is of legal UK drinking age... eighteen. She typically grabs the seats in the back of the classroom, unless she is crushing on the teacher. She sticks to the same people she is familiar with, but she is all-around nice. Other than my character, I'd have to say the principal and counselor are the ones to watch out for. They are anything but typical, and I'll leave it at that.

Last week NASA published a new report on climate change.  They say we have only five short years left before a runaway greenhouse effect starts on earth.  If we can’t stop it, we should prepare for it.  So what should we do?

We may be facing enormous floods, massive extinctions, millions of climate refugees, wars to keep out climate refugees, food shortages because of failed crops and cities sinking underwater because of rising sea levels.

Is there any place where we can survive global warming?  Antarctica is a huge continent.  When all the ice has gone maybe we should go and live there.

The pros and cons of getting a mesh avatar 

 

As someone who enjoys the virtual world with a basic shape and skin avatar (also known as a primmed avatar ) I’ve always wondered why my fellow Second Life Residents would spend their lindens on expensive mesh avatars. Are there benefits to using mesh that I don’t know about? Is the choice to go mesh purely aesthetic? To mesh or not to mesh? That is the question, here are some of the answers I received from the good people at Builder’s Brewery.

 

Ryo Ichikawa (bartimaeus.brandenburg) wrote: “I love using mesh ava… they look very elegant, but customizability can be a bit of a pain… and most are expressionless... "

 

Trixie Seomun replied : "i personally think it is a waste of everyones time. . . they take longer to load . . you have to purchase specific clothing that works with THAT spefic mesh body,  and i just dont see the upside to  them."

 

Evie Moriguchi concurred : "In Trixie's defense, some of the bodies are kind of "bloated" there have been a few where it takes a few minutes for the full body to rez … I'm more of a fan of hybridding.  I really wish there was a system that broke the body into limbs or fitted attachments when huge parts of the body are going to be invisible anyway"

In a private conversation with SEX GODDESS DAISY JOLIE (daisy.stoneshield), Daisy replied : "I was sceptical about using a mesh avi because when you first purchase one sometimes they are confusing ... but they are more life like than the primmed ones that makes me like them … on the primed avi's the feet are hideous then when you purchase slink feet which are cute you get this line that never goes away so spend way to many lindens on trying to buy jewelry to cover the lines up but with the mesh avi I have it comes with feet and hands so those lines no longer exist"

In another private conversation Issabella (issabellabeauclerc) stated : "i have the maitreya and the slink … the slink is cheaper but for a first time mesh body not the easiest … i also know a little about the tmp … maitreya is the easiest to use ... i spent over 10k for my slink i dont use ... the slink hud is a nightmare for a beginner … what i suggest to my friends is the maitreya with a sl cat skin cause it has appliers for alot of the mesh bodies"

 

Sizzelle

In a conversation with Sizzelle, the SL Artist replied : “ I’ve grown attached to my avatar’s appearance and with mesh clothes the body doesn’t really matter. However for images that feature "nude" subjects I use the mesh project body."

Othella the Editor of MAGE Magazine elaborated : "We use both mesh and system avatars for our magazine images and machinima videos. Mesh is very good for close ups while basic avatars tend to distort as you zoom in to the face. For non human avatars such as Aldo the Alien, Yayo the Minotaur and Mez the Werewolf, we use mesh. For human avatars we create mesh hybrids. The down side is that there are seams around body parts where the mesh connects like the wrists and ankles but we cover this up with bracelets, anklets, collars or I “airbrush" out the seams in the editing process ... I also found full permission hands and feet which are used by the MAGE models. The hands cost 50 lindens and the feet were free… Based on my own experience mesh furniture, props and clothes create less lag than objects made with prims."

So it seems the choice to adopt a MESH lifestyle is a debate over aesthetics, affordability and performance that remains undecided. But why not decide for yourself?
