Seanchai Library: The Dickens Project Returns for 2022 December 8- January 3

Second Life – Seanchai Library is proud to announce the opening of The Dickens Project 2022 Edition. This Second Life winter holiday tradition invites guests to walk in the steps of Ebenezer Scrooge in an environment inspired, in part, by Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol.” An invited community of Second Life groups and organizations will present a variety of music events, dance performances, as well as story presentations. Other Project features include skating, sledding, a balloon ride, a horse cart tour, and plenty of photo opportunities. The Dickens Project regions will open on Thursday, December 8th, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, January 3rd.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The 2022 Edition features an Experience-based teleport system. Please accept the “Caledonian Studios” Experience in the Welcome Area to fully explore The Project.

LOCATION: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/The%20Dickens%20Project/129/128/1401

"This year we challenged a lot of assumptions about how we configured the land to tell the story," said Caledonia Skytower of Seanchai Library. "So what Dickens Project fans will discover is a layout that is very different from past Projects, but still has a narrative sense. It feels like a lot ‘more’, somehow, and yet will still have the friendly familiarity that many will expect."  The Dickens Project is intentionally designed to follow, as much as possible, the narrative of Dickens’ 1843 work, allowing guests to walk through the Christmas past, present, and future of the story.

The Dickens Project also seeks to promote community - a community of Second Life individuals and organizations which come together for this annual celebration. After a hiatus in 2021, this community includes Virtual Community Radio and Innsmouth in SL. The Community Virtual Library will again provide research and information on Victorian life in the time of Dickens’ works.

Four dance companies will present unique performances including Idle Rogue Productions, TerpsiCorps Dance, Misfit Dance and Performance Art SL, and Virtuoso Dance. Eclipse Club and Resort will contribute music sets in addition to various independent DJs and musicians.  SL Hawks Aerobatic Team will return for a single performance of their popular “Ghost Flights of Christmas” air show in the skies above Dickens Harbour, this season with wing walkers. These are all in addition to the live story reading programs for which Seanchai Library is known.

The popular "Carol Week" returns in a revised format this year. The week will begin with The Big Read on Sunday, December 18th at Noon. The relay-style presentation involves a chorus of voices in a continuous reading of "A Christmas Carol" from beginning to end. The week will continue December 19 - 22nd with a section of Dickens' novella presented live each day in a "Story Tour" presentation to the sites in the region inspired by the story.

Seanchai Library offers its thanks to Linden Labs and Patch Linden, our 2022 Region Sponsors.

There will be additional information available on the Seanchai Library Website, and at the Welcome Area at The Dickens Project.

This press release is available in digital form at https://irelandslstory.blogspot.com/p/the-dickens-project-press-release.html

GeekSpeak – Will Bitcoin save us from monetary collapse? Join the discussion on Saturday, December 3rd at 12pm SLT

Bitcoin recently saw its 13th birthday.  What is going on nowadays in the bitcoin world?  And why are people still puzzled by it?  Some see it as the best invention ever and think it will save the monetary system of the world.  Others think it is doomed to fail and no one should invest in it.

Is the energy used to mine bitcoin a serious problem?  Is bitcoin still a good investment or is it far too risky?  What will a future where all money is blockchain-based look like?

Bring your friends to GeekSpeak on Saturday at noon SLT to discuss the world of bitcoin and its future.  Serious people only.

Line of credit vs. Credit card

Line of credit and credit cards are similar types of revolving credit that allow you to borrow a certain amount of funds that you can use for business relates expenses or equipment financing. However, even though they are very similar, they still have their own advantages and disadvantages and a better suited for some purposes than others.

If you narrowed down your options to these two types of loans, you have definitely made a wise choice, and we are sure you will be satisfied either way. But there are some important differences between credit cards and lines of credit you should know before you make the final decision, and you can find all of them in the article below.

Line of Credit (LOC)

This is a flexible type of loan. It is a set sum of money that you can use as needed to cover business expenses within a predetermined time frame. The moment you utilize the money, interest starts to accrue, just like with many other types of loans. Although interest rates, or APRs (annual percentage rates), for lines of credit vary depending on the repayment terms, they are often lower than credit card APRs.

LOCs provide immediate access to money and are a fantastic choice for independent contractors, consultants, and people with irregular monthly revenue. To apply for a line of credit, you must visit a physical bank, much like you would for a loan. However, LOCs have lower interest and APR rates when compared to loans. Since many LOCs lack collateral, they can often be funded without it. Make sure to repay on time whatever sort of credit you choose to take on because they can lower your credit score.

Drawbacks- Lines of credit might not be the ideal source of credit for everyone. LOCs are not tax deductible. Therefore, if you do take one, it would be wise to repay the loan as soon as possible rather than using it as a continuous source of funding. Additionally, getting authorized for a LOC is more difficult if you have little to no credit history.

Credit Card

Personal and business credit cards share many similarities. The main distinction between the two is that the business ones can only  be used for business purposes. A corporate credit card has annual fees and interest rates that start as soon as you activate and use it, just like a personal credit card does.

Similar to a LOC, you can use the money as you see fit, but there is a spending cap. Business credit cards are far more accessible than other types of business loans. Business cards can be applied for, authorized, and sent right to your office without needing to visit a physical bank. You can even apply for a secured card if your credit history is less than ideal for reducing the danger of payment default.

The incentives or bonuses are probably a company credit card's best benefit. You can utilize your points for business trips, conferences, trade exhibits, and other events while also earning cash back and airline or hotel rewards.

Drawbacks- Although corporate credit cards might appear to be the greatest choice, they do have certain disadvantages. Security problems can arise from using credit cards, such as employees abusing their access to funds and a higher likelihood of fraud.

Final decision

No form of funding is fundamentally harmful however, in the end, it all depends on how it is used. LOCs may be more challenging to get, and if not promptly repaid, they may wind up costing the account holder extra money over time. Even those with little to no credit history can far more easily obtain credit cards. On the other hand business owners that choose credit cards can experience a higher risk of fraud.

When choosing between a line of credit and a business credit card, take into account how quickly you require the financing. It might be worthwhile to improve your relationship with your bank if you have the time to pursue a LOC. Its speed and simplicity make it the best option.

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 26th November at noon SLT: What will you take with you to Mars?

What will the future Mars settlers need to take with them?  Will they have to take all the oxygen, water and food they need for 2 years?  And materials and tools for building a base?

Or will human settlers need to take nothing with them because robots will have prepared everything before they arrive?  Will the settlers simply step into a luxury base with all the food and oxygen already available?

What is needed for a human to survive on Mars?  And what is needed to thrive once you get there?  Do we know exactly what will be needed?  Will the robots we send before us be able to tell us just what we will need?  What will the ‘technology tree’ of a Mars settlement be?

Come to GeekSpeak at noon on Saturday to discuss what we will need on Mars.  Serious people only.

Happy Thanksgiving From the Sports and Leisure Desk at SLE- Stacey Cardalines Reporting...

Gobble Gobble!

Thanksgiving and Halloween are sorts of the co-anchors of the Autumn season. Autumn starts in September, but September and early October can still have some nice days, at least where I live (Massachusetts). Halloween and Thanksgiving fall (no pun intended) is a time of year when there is no doubt that Summer has left the building. I've bundled my children up in winter coats to send them trick or treating, and I've sat at a Thanksgiving football game where it was 12 degrees outside.

This cold dichotomy may lead some people to hate Autumn, but not this reporter. I love the change of seasons, I love the fall foliage and I love all the harvest stuff going on at local farms. One of the reasons that I haven't written here in a while is that I spent a lot of October and November driving around to look at trees changing color or roaming through pumpkin patches like Linus. There are other reasons, but they are sad ones, and this is supposed to be the Enquirer's funny column, so no need to drag that all up here.

I was looking to write about Thanksgiving and especially Plymouth. Plymouth is the birthplace of Thanksgiving (Jamestown had the real first Thanksgiving, but Virginians need to argue with their underperforming public relations staff, not me). I live deep enough in real-life Plymouth County that I can see the Mayflower II across the bay from my house. Seeking to capitalize on this unearned Dad-bought-a-house-here expertise, I hunt incessantly for Plymouth-related sims every November so that I can let the people know my wisdom.

Only once in my years working for this publication have I found Plymouth on SL, and- to be frank- it looked more like northern California... and I say that in the "Sacramento is not California" sense that Rush Street Reggie made famous. They had a Mayflower, a few colonial-looking cabins, and some turkeys running about. I was very pleased, and Lanai got a Thanksgiving article out of me that year. That sim is something else these days, and I could find no substitute for it any other year I looked.

This year also failed to net me a Plymouth, but that doesn't mean my deadline goes away, so I had to hunt me up some Autumn somewhere.

I found Autumn in spades at the Mieville Thanksgiving Street Fair. This is a very nice sim that is all set up for the Fall season. as you can see from the pictures, they have turkeys, fireplaces, fall foliage, November-blooming flowers... all that good stuff.  The sim is cleverly constructed so the visitor walks around a pastoral autumn scene, but as they do, they go by little sales kiosks where they can purchase seasonally-themed products.

It makes for a very nice walk and is a good setting for some cute pictures. I heartily recommend it. They have the autumnal theme running through the 25th, so hurry on down this long weekend. Much like real life, there isn't much time for you to see Fall things... it will be December before you and I speak again.

People take things in SL for granted. If you go to a sim where it is done up for Autumn, you should rightfully praise whoever set the sim up. You should also, however, appreciate the infrastructure which provides the things that you see at that sim. You have to find someone who sells Autumn trees, turkeys, horns-o-plenty, Mayflowers, and what have you. SL is funny like that- many people play SL just to have cyber sex, but there are people who log on to SL and spend the day making Pilgrim hats. Because of them and the sacrifices they made, the sim you get laid at has a nice, comforting Autumn look. A timeless Norman Rockwell background takes some of the shame out of av-fucking a stranger.

Because there are designers who make turkey tailfeathers and Pilgrim costumes, my sister Courtney and I have seasonally-themed outfits for our job as dancers. Being from Plymouth, I was a natural for the Naughty Pilgrim costume. Not being from Plymouth, my sister ended up having to be a turkey. I didn't think to include my costume, which is just black lingerie with a Priscilla Alden bonnet, in this article. There was no way in Hell I was going to forget to highlight my sister with goofy turkey feathers attached to her lower spine.

I won the next season, too... I get to dance as Mrs. Claus, while Courtney will spend December wearing reindeer antlers with blinking Christmas tree lights on them. Much like her tailfeathers, she loves when people ask about her antlers, why she has to wear them, whether she lost a bet or not... go on down and say hello.

People should also not take Autumn for granted. Autumn gets a bad rap, basically because it is Summer's pallbearer. Never forget that Autumn stands between Summer and the ice/cold/snow of Winter. Winter's main holiday- Christmas- is all about snow and cold. There will be months where you'd be thrilled to see a forecast for the day as "highs in the 40s, lows in the 30s." People in western New York right now wish it was 48 degrees.

The key is to see the bright side. Go out even on SL- and see some trees changing color. Get an apple cider donut. Watch some farmer harvest something. Remember, in about a month, it will be too cold to go out. Go down to the Mieville Thanksgiving Street Fair and see some Autumn. Otherwise, once you go down the list some, you'll end up at Divas, watching a stripper journalist dressed as a Pilgrim... or her sister Courtney, dressed as a turkey.

The positive part of journalism is informing the public, sharing your adventures, helping someone who needs help, promoting good causes, blah blah blah... the negative but fun part of journalism is using your column to humiliate your sister, who might have to dance for all comers dressed as a turkey.
