In line with its open booking policy, Open Mics have returned to the MULTI MEDIA ARTS CENTER in a continuing effort to showcase new and otherwise unknown talents within the Second Life community.

WORD! is a weekly poetry gathering, hosted by ROSEDROP RUST, meeting Mondays between 4-5:30pm in CABARET CARLOTTA. First and last half hours offer an Open Mic for all to share their own or favorite poems, prose, etc. A Special Guest is featured in the second half hour.

Tuesdays at 7pm, all are invited to the Open Mic at THE COMEDY LINK Laugh Club to tell a joke, share a funny story, work out your tight ten-minute standup, or just come for the laughs. There are improv and word games to tickle the funny bone. Don't be shy, no drama, just fun.

The first Wednesday of each month, THE FILM LINK Cinema is the spot for the MIDWEEK MOVIE MINGLE. Get together to view and talk about short films, videos, machinima, trailers, etc. It's an open mic for moving image makers, since submissions are encouraged.

SPOTLIGHT ON SLE’S OPEN MIC WINNER FOR MARCH LARK BOWEN: Mack Abbot Reporting

Singing in Second Life can be a nightmare for some people. Not Lark Bowen. The songstress took time out of her busy schedule for a chat with me about her career and her very early beginnings.

Interview with Lark Bowen

Mack: First off the bat, tell me about "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas".  What made you pick a song from that as a 3 year old performing on your landing in your house?

Lark:  Oh heavens!  I just knew that was going to come up.  Ok, so here is the story.  My family held this big event every Christmas Eve morning where all of the extended family and friends were invited to a Christmas Eve breakfast at my Grandmother's home.  We believed it was a great chance to see everyone and catch up.  It would start at 7 am and go to like noon and had all the Southern delicacies, i.e. eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, fruit, pastries, and ... fried rabbit…smh...So... that is the setting. So I was two months shy of my third birthday and I sang You are my Sunshine for my family, so they decided to make my singing part of the tradition.  So the next year, I was not yet four and the movie Annie had come out.  Everyone thought they would hear me sing Tomorrow from Annie.  My mother made me a red velvet dress with layers of white lace.  I stood on the Landing of her staircase with everyone looking at me and I reached down and hiked up my skirt and sang the opening number to The  Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.  You see, my father knew I loved Dolly Parton and I had NO idea what that movie/musical was about so my father had no qualms in letting me watch it.  So when I was done, my  mother was mortified, my father was grinning, my Grandfather was laughing so hard he fell over in his chair.  Suffice to say, people were either  dying of laugher or so embarassed they didn't know what to say.  A paramedic trip and some oxygen later, it became a family tale.

Mack: So you nearly killed a relative with your song choice.  That's probably down to your innocence of youth.  So when did you decide to make singing a career choice?  Did you do singing in choirs or church after that?

Lark:  Oh yes!  Growing up, my father was a member of a Southern Gospel music group.  So as I grew up, I would sing in church, I sang in choirs at school from grade six to my senior year.  Per the recommendation of a teacher, I was given lessons starting at age 14 and then when I was 17,  I auditioned for scholarships to college.   I was fortunate enough to go to college on a scholarship for Vocal Performance.  So while there, I did shows, musicals, plays, and of course had hours and hours and hours of practice each week along with lessons from my professor who was just amazing.  Unfortunately, I did not pursue music after graduation because I was offered an amazing job working at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, so my life turned away from music.

Mack:   Thats pretty cool!  So when did you come back to the musical fold?  Did you do any professional work or work in clubs or social events?

Lark: Actually, no.  Surprisingly enough.  Before going to college, I actually had stage fright that continued over to my first recital in college.  I literally had to be Pushed out onto the stage because doing solo performances gave me anxiety.  Through time and my work at Disney, I got over that.  So by my senior year, I had learned to walk out like I owned that stage.  Oddly enough, due to time away from the stage, my old anxieties took hold again.  I wouldn't even get up and do karaoke in RL because I just couldn't.  Luckily, in SL, when I was hanging out with friends, we'd sometimes just sing over voice.  One day, these two people, Ry Foxdale and Agusto Napoli were there and heard me.  Agusto is a live musician and he had Ry talk to me because, well this is SL and you know, a guy messaging you saying, you have a great voice might not come off in a good way.  So she told me they thought I should be performing.  I explained it would be fun, but I didn't know how or what was needed.  Agusto set me up and in 2015, I returned to music by singing in SL.  It was like coming home.

Mack: So did you come to SL to sing or were you already in SL?

Lark:  I was already in Second Life.... oddly enough because I saw this episode on Law & Order SVU about SL.  Yeah... Great recommendation huh?  But I explored, experienced, had a blast, and just stayed.  Finding out about live music became a cherry on top of an amazing sundae.

Mack:Yeah odd way to find out about SL for sure.  So how would you describe your singing style?

Lark:Oh, boy, kind of a hard one.  I guess I'm eclectic.  I love to sing everything from classical to hard rock, country to r&b.  I sing things that make me feel something and that is what I want to do for others.  I want to sing things that will touch their hearts and make them feel something.  So my style is more... emotional, I guess. I want to take people on a journey and tell people's stories through song.

Mack: Do you have any inspirations? Anyone you look up to in the music world?

Lark: Yeah... first my father.  He didn't sing, but played guitar, bass, and banjo.  My uncle was the singer and sang in Honky Tonks around Kentucky and Tennessee.  They didn't make it big, but they loved what they did and that inspired me.  And also when it comes to making you feel something, I look at singers like Adele, Sarah Brightman, Sarah McLachlan, Queen, Lorreta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Garth Brooks, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston... I could go on.  The ones that made us laugh, cry, smile, and remember.

Mack: Where can people find you in SL? Do you have a group or a regular haunt that people can see you perform at?

Lark: So I have a group in SL - 'lil miss songbird.  I probably should have named that better.  In SL, I'm currently singing at Snowy Owl every other Monday at 6pm slt.  Soon, I'll be getting back to The Aquarium.  And I do random shows all the time.  I have something big coming up in the Summer I can't wait to do.

Mack: So I heard something about a classical recital, can you expand on that?

Lark: Absolutely!  So I once sang O Mio Bambino Caro and it shocked people because they didn't know I was classically trained.  So I was asked if I would be willing to do that.  I'm preparing for that right now.  I have selected the pieces for the show.  It will have arias from Mozart, French art songs from Debussy and Faure, German lieder songs by Schubert, and some contemporary pieces from John Alden Carpenter just to name a few.  More details to follow so stay tuned!

Mack: Is there anything else you want to share with our readers?

Lark:  If you have ever thought of performing in SL and that is your dream and you don't know where to start, hit me up.  I have offered Agusto and Ry to repay them time and time again but they declined.  I was asked to pay it forward and that is what I do.  When someone wants to do this, I help them the way I was helped.

WHISTLE STOP MUSIC CAFE' - SL’S FINEST ENTERTAINMENT VENUE REACHES NEW HEIGHTS OF EXCELLENCE: JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

I was sim hopping the other day and received an invite to check out one of the more amazing builds I have seen in nearly two decades in SL. Whistle Stop Music Café is truly unique in the way they cater to the entertainment needs of SL residents.  I was able to catch up with Ashley Steel, the Owner of this phenomenal region, and she graciously agreed to answer some questions about this most amazing build.

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) (JB):     Ashley.  I know how very busy you must be, and I really do appreciate your taking some time here to address some questions some of our SL Enquirer readers may have about your place.  First off, where did you get the idea for Whistle Stop Music Café?

Ashley Steel (AS):     Many factors came into the idea for Whistle Stop Music Cafe.

The Luke Comes song “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma” about a long black train really resonated with me, especially since I am from Oklahoma. It seemed a natural inspiration for the build and it was a good fit.

People I know in SL wanted to open a club and they asked me for help.  Unfortunately, that arrangement did not work out, but I was already in venue mode so here we go.

JB:     Did you build all this yourself, or did you have help?

AS:     Whistle Stop Music Cafe was a group effort.  We were all sitting around having morning coffee and showing photos.  Angel and members of Whistle Stop had an open discussion about things we would like on the venue. So I took steps to make that happen.  I worked with Gazza from  Creative Habitats SL - Landscaping

Members also gave suggestions and ideas

JB:     Tell me about some of the different areas on your build?

AS:     We have the Train Station, which is the Main Club

Under the Stars Romantic Ballroom:  This is an elegant, breathtaking venue that is open to enjoy 24/7.  Here you can indulge your more romantic side in our elegant ballroom. With its classic charm and intimate setting, it's the perfect place to dance the night away with your special someone. Whether it's a slow waltz or a lively tango, the ballroom offers a magical experience for all.

We host currently a weekly date night event on Wednesdays from 5pm to 8pm SLT. The night starts off with Live Music and a DJ. We offer 3 hours of lovely romantic music for you to enjoy with friends and loved ones.

JB:     What are some of the things visitors can do?

AS:    Oh, we have LOTS of things for visitors and guests to enjoy while on our grounds.  Examples include:

  • ·         Entertainment and DJs:  Experience the best beats from our talented DJs, who spin an eclectic mix of music to keep you dancing all night long. Our DJs are known for their ability to read the crowd and create an unforgettable party vibe. Join us for themed nights and special DJ events that will have you coming back for more.
  • ·         Chill and Hang Out:  Whistle Stop Music Cafe is the ideal spot to chill and hang out with friends. With a laid-back atmosphere and plenty of comfortable seating, it's a great place to catch up over a cup of coffee or a refreshing drink. Our friendly staff is always ready to make your visit enjoyable.
  • ·         Live Performers and Concerts:  For those who appreciate live music, Whistle Stop Music Cafe hosts an array of talented performers. From indie bands to solo artists, our stage is home to a diverse lineup that showcases the best in local and international talent. Check out our concert schedule to catch your favorite artists live.
  • ·         Talented Artists and Shopping:  Explore a world of creativity with our talented artists' exhibits and pop-up shops. This is a lovely place to take photos.  Discover unique pieces and support local artisans by browsing through an array of Clothing items. Whether you're looking for art, Men’s Clothing, Lady's Clothing, or gifts, you'll find something special here.
  • ·         Cuddle Areas:   Need a break from the excitement? Our cozy cuddle areas provide a peaceful retreat where you can relax and unwind. Perfect for intimate conversations or simply enjoying a quiet moment, these spaces are designed for comfort and connection.

Enjoy lively conversations with local voices and make new connections through shared interests.

In addition to these, we also have a beach for fun and relaxing (But no nudity allowed). We have an amazing Coffee Shop, along with the (N-O] Sport Fishing Game, a Dining Train for romantic Date Nights,  an Open Mic venue, Bummer Boats, and a Swan Romance Ride.

For the sporting enthusiast, we have a 9 Hole Golf Course.

You don’t have a Date?  No problem.  Meet that perfect someone through our Date Connection Dating boards.

We also have a great many really fine merchants with shops here to include:

  • ·         Shops with fashionable clothing for your avatars
  • ·         Hoorenbeek Quality Clothing
  • ·         Stars Coming soon
  • ·         Sxuan
  • ·         Fabulissimi
  • ·         EE Designs
  • ·         Closet Shopping
  • ·         Love Connect ad boards - Rent boards to find your soul mate
  • ·         Art Gallery
  • ·         Art by Thomaz Blackburn
  • ·         Art by Kaerann Studio- Cathy Kaerann

JB:     What would you say is the ideal visitor to your Region?

AS:     We are a welcoming and friendly destination and all are welcome here.  We do, however, provide guidance for our guests so that all can enjoy the best experience we can offer.  For example, no child avatars are allowed.  There are many other builds that cater to that type of visitor much better than we would.  Also, no avatars that are bigger than buildings are allowed inside our buildings.  Such avatars are, however, welcome in open venue areas.

JB:     I understand that every linden that comes in from tips and shop rentals goes back into enhancing the guest experience?  How does that work for you?

AS:     All donations go back into the venue to help with events and special events.  Also, we do not charge to join our group.  We are truly focused on providing the best possible experience for our guests, and not charge them an arm and a leg to do so.

JB:     Is it true that your library has Readable books?  What types of books would that be?

Lots of different genres - Poetry, Bio, Art - all are donated by SecondLife members. We have even talked about adding recipes.  This will grow I am sure as we have a wide range of members from different lifestyles

JB:     I understand you have an event coming up, APR 13-WHISTLE STOP VIP APPRECIATION PARTY.  Tell me about that, please?

AS:     Each Month we have a concert or special event to show our appreciation to our VIPs.  This is one of those events.

JB:     And how might someone learn more about what you have here.  Any Social Media sites you can share?

AS:     It’s Easy.  They can join us on FB, or go to the SL EVENTS  Venue Calendar.

JB:     Is there anything else you would like to tell us about Whistle Stop Music Café?

AS:     Certainly, Josh.  I just want to welcome your readers to Whistle Stop Music Cafe, where entertainment meets relaxation in a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Whether you're seeking an exciting night out or a cozy evening with friends, our cafe offers something for everyone.

The Burrow Coffee Company Reopens-Sheristrawberri Reporting

One of Second Life’s longest running and most popular casual gathering spots has re-opened following a major overhaul of the sim. The Burrow Coffee Co. is open once again and welcoming people back in.

“We began in 2009 in Second Life. Our original name was The Pixel Bean Coffeehouse. A handful of years later we re-branded to what we are today, Burrow Coffee Company,” said Harlow Heslop, the owner and founder of this famed “java joint.”

The name, according to Harlow, is something she randomly came up with. “I was seeking a name that felt cozy and comfortable. And I thought of how little woodland creatures often reside in burrows and it felt fitting for the space.”

Harlow pointed out that cafes and coffeehouses in RL serve as gathering places for members of the community and are a place to make connections.

“I felt SL could use something like that. I also really love coffee and I'm a bit of an addict in RL,” she added with a smile.

“We offer a community of like-minded people, a safe space for anyone to spend time at. We have DJ events, live musicians on occasion, game nights, poetry nights, and more” said Harlow. “And honestly, it's a nice spot to AFK when you need to without being harassed by people,” she added with a laugh.

Harlow pointed out that over the years there have been many changes to the look and layout of the coffeehouse.

“We've been through many different buildings and designs over the years, but our community and concept has stayed very similar,” she said. She describes that community and concept as cozy, happy, interactive with a touch of realism.

This current re-model was designed to incorporate some of the numerous changes that have been happening in SL.

“I wanted to upgrade to something PBR since that is a new feature in Second Life,” said Harlow. “I like to try and keep up with technology and offer the community new things.”

Harlow created the all mesh building and décor herself. She pointed out that she had begun working on the new building a couple of months before the official re-model. She is quite adept at creating such things as she also owns and operates the store Spruce.

“I run a shop called Spruce and make original mesh creations, so I figure why not build my own cafe?” Harlow said she actually began working on the building a couple of months before the official start of the re-model.

The building and the sim as a whole offers many comfortable places for people to relax, meet others, chat, and enjoy a comfortable time. There is plenty of seating both inside and out to accommodate either a group or for people to hold intimate conversations.

The sim also features a stage and dance floor along with a place for those who enjoy table games to play a few.

Regular events are held at the coffee shop and include music, DJs, discussions, and even gaming events. “We have a google calendar you can access via are our socials in the foyer,” said Harlow.

“We actually will have an event once monthly on the first Sunday of each month starting in May that is an inventory sorting hangout,” she added.

When you land at The Burrow Coffee Co. you are requested to use the shared environment which is changed up on a regular basis. The same holds true for the coffee shop’s music which varies from the occasional DJ to an eclectic stream.

“The cafe is very much a group effort. I have an amazing management team filled with wonderful people who really make this place special,” said Harlow, citing that the ever changing windlights are done by Harvey Blackwood and the superb landscaping was done by Aria Christen.

The Burrow Coffee Co. re-opened the first week in April and is currently an Editor’s Pick in the Destination Guide.

“We've been on there so many times over the years. Sometimes we submit to be on it and other times we've been chosen as an Editor's Pick where Linden Lab picks us,” added Harlow.

But that’s to be expected of one of the longest running and most popular gather places in SL.

LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR A FRIENDLY AND EXCITING FASHION COMPETITION FOR ALL!

The year 2025 will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the prestigious LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR style competition!

Created for the pleasure of fashion and to promote the diversity of beauty, this competition has brought together and made thousands of women of all styles shine.

OPEN TO WOMEN & MEN
Yes! All women, and since last year all men, who have stylistic qualities and who know how to express elegance, the spearhead of LUXE Paris fashion, can participate! Last year, Wyatt Frost Reyes showed so much style that he won third place, ahead of seven beautiful women finalists.

Second place went to TwinkieBean for her stylish and striking look while the prestigious LOOK of the YEAR title was awarded to VanessaJane for her graceful and radiant elegance.

EVERYONE CAN WIN!
PROFESSIONALS OR AMATEURS!
Even if many top models participate each year in this competition, we have also seen beginners rise to the top ranks and even win. Indeed, the organization offers tailor-made training for all the finalists.

From the beginners, the judges will expect them to transform into professionals through hard work and passion while the team of mentors will provide them with all the necessary ammunitions.

In the professionals, the judges will want to see progression, refinement, the achievement of new goals.

During this training and throughout the different stages of the competition, the mentors, also members of the jury, will also monitor the ambassadorial qualities of the participants. Because our LOOK of the YEAR will become the official ambassador of LUXE Paris for an entire year.

L$50,000 CASH TO THE WINNER!
L$10,000 TO THE RUNNERS UP!
In addition to offering L$50,000 cash to the winner and L$10,000 to each of the two runners up, LUXE Paris will also distribute them a whole range of gifts, offered by our sponsors.

The finalists will not be forgotten because they will receive 10 LUXE Paris outfits of their choice, a L$1500 gift card from the jeweler ZURI and a L$1500 gift card from MY BAGS by Mila Blauvelt, to prepare for the grand finale.

FREE LUXE Paris OUTFIT TO ALL PARTICIPANTS
Also, all candidates will receive a free LUXE Paris ensemble upon receipt of their first submission! This means that everyone is a winner and that's without counting all the pleasure and radiance the LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR contest brings to all participants.

Each of the 5 weeks of the semifinal, the photos of the top six candidates will be published on our website at LUXEParis.online and here in The SL Enquirer. The Spanish magazine SL Confidencial will also feature the semifinalists in its monthly editions.

EASY TO PARTICIPATE!
Do you want to submit your application? It's easy! Put on a LUXE Paris outfit, style it your way, take a picture (snapshot or 1024 X 1024), put your legal name in the title and send it FULL PERM to the avatar LUXEParisLOOKoftheYEAR inworld.

Who knows? Maybe it will be your turn to live the great LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR adventure! Nothing to lose and a beautiful LUXE Paris set to win!

THE LIVE FINALE
Once we have 30 semifinalists, the jury will review their photos and choose 12 finalists. The finalists will then be invited to meet the judges in person at an elegant brunch during which they will have to present a short written speech explaining why they would be a good ambassador for LUXE Paris.

The big twelve will also participate to a live fashion show on an imposed theme, during which the jury will make its final decision. Remember that LUXE Paris is looking for an ambassador, a woman or a man with style, panache and charisma.

VANESSAJANE'S TIPS
TENTH OF THE DYNASTY LOOK OF THE YEAR
"My best advice to participants is to be genuinely authentically yourself", says VanessaJane, LOOK of the YEAR 2024-2025, when we ask her to share her experience.

"When I first participated in LOTY in 2022 I was too caught up in what I thought I was
expected to be, how I was expected to style, and I strangled myself as a result!

"But last year I competed for the fun and the opportunity to style, threw out any expectations and made a promise to myself that I would not lose 'me'! And I won!!!

"Mika and Paris, the founders and chief designers of LUXE Paris, want a genuine relationship with their ambassador so I have come to understand that it is vital to reveal the real you when you compete."

The unisex 2025 LOOK of the YEAR competition is a production of LUXE Paris and ONE On ONE Agency in collaboration with Zuri Jewelry, In-Nova Modelling Academy, My Bags by Mila Blauvelt, Hayabusa Design, SL Confidencial magazine, The SL Enquirer, Swank Events, Womenstuff & Menstuff groups, ProPose, The Latin Quarter and Javi Gearz Video.

You want to know more? Visit our website at luxeparis.online or pick up our LUXE Paris magazine - Special Edition LOOK of the YEAR at our main store on Bao/56/72/26.
