Fashionable and Thrifty - Survival of the Broke - Taisynn Reporting

Is it possible to be fashionable and thrifty in Second Life, and is it reasonable?

Second Life is a world filled with shopping events and the desire to create the most fashionable avatar on the grid. It is all too common for new residents to become overwhelmed with trying to create in trying to craft their own unique persona on a limited budget without being exiled to prim-laden attire from the pre-mesh era.

The question of pursuing Second Life is often of cost. While our virtual world is considered a free simulator by the gaming industry, everything within it surrounds the value of the Linden. Not every person is able to upload $20US (the equivalent of about 4090 lindens) to have an updated avatar, and some question if it is even possible to play the game freely.

Interested potential residents often do not know about the ever growing freebie fashion community which has made Second Life possible for many new players to play without looking amateurish. Groups such as SL Frees and Offers have an upward of 54,000 members, and popular blogs such as Fabulously Free bring in dozens of views per day for both women and men alike.

They aid new residents in their ever evolving avatar be it in the form of skins, fashion, furniture, housing, or many other items that further the creative nature that exists behind Second Life. Indeed it is the free items that showcase what many designers are capable of and draw in new and old players alike to peruse their shelves in search of bigger and better to truly craft their avatar to be something special and unique to them.

The methods creators use to offer these freebies often surround generating store traffic in exchange for these free items. It takes time and friends to successfully freebie hunt, but there are entire groups dedicated to helping members become successful.

The first and most popular method which creators use are group gifts. Second Life groups allow creators to advertise potential customers of new releases. The more members that are in the group, the wider their audience and potential of making a sale is. In exchange for members staying in the group, they are offered a gift or two every month.

However, there are methods that don't take up group space, considering there are thousands of groups in Second Life, and our avatars are only allowed to participate in 42 of them. One of these methods is the lucky chair or board.

A lucky chair is a chair with a letter connected to it. The letter, after a certain amount of time, will change to another. Using the first initial of a resident's legacy name, an avatar with a name beginning with that letter is able to sit down and obtain a prize in the chair's vault. There is another variety called a lucky board that doesn't require a resident to sit in it, but rather just click on it to obtain the prize.

Depending on the countdown on each chair, this can be time consuming. Considering there are 24 letters in the alphabet, and with residents able to have numbers in the beginning of their legacy name, there are 9 numbers mixed into each chair, and one wildcard round symbolized by a question mark. Waiting five minutes for each letter to pop up, praying it's your initial, is a game of luck and time.

Residents use groups such as SL Frees and Offers to call the letters out to other freebie hunters. This allows them to make the letters rotate at a faster pace, and increases their chances of having their initial pop up.

The next method used is a midnight mania board. This method involves a board with two sets of numbers on it. It is a ratio of how many residents have clicked the board to how many residents are needed to lock it down. If the board locks down, at midnight all the residents who clicked obtain the prize. Midnight Mania boards are less time consuming, but involve worrying about your instant messages capping if you've gone to bed before midnight.

While the first three methods above are the most popular methods of obtaining freebies, they are not the only ones out there. New methods continue to pop up, such as puzzle games and chairs that require you to sit in them for ten minutes to an hour. It is all up to the creator and what method seems to appeal to them the best.

For Avatars looking for more exclusive gifts, some creators charge a fee to enter their groups. These groups provide VIP access to free store credit for new releases every month, discounts, and group gifts of superior quality. There is also a method called 7Seas fishing that allows people to fish for clothing given by creators. Of course, you also obtain prim fish you can breed and trade, but many use this method to get clothes they can trade between fellow fishers. These methods are costly, costing anywhere between 50 lindens and above, but often give nicer quality gifts.

In the end, with all the possibilities of obtaining free items, residents can fashion their avatar at little to no cost at all. Second Life is a very charitable and fascinating world, and is entirely playable for those looking for something for free to occupy their free time.

Sonicity Fitzroy (a.k.a. Soni) Celebrates her 5th Anniversary of SL Radio this Spring, featuring SL musicians!

Bringing her real life radio experience into Second Life, as well as her love and appreciation of the talented musicians here, she found the best way to pay tribute to the in-world music scene was to dedicate her radio show to exclusively SL singers and bands.   Her show is called Slow Bake, and ranges in genres, but much of SL's music is acoustically driven, offering a slower pace.  She particularly focuses on original works.
Her show is part of SL Live Radio's growing network of radio stations, and is featured on Sundays  12-2pm SLT at the Station's Studio 2  in Misty Falls.

As a feature journalist, Soni's blog (Sonicity Radio) keeps up with SL Music events and offers an occasional profile of the talented artists featured on her show, as well as live music shows.   Her list includes Kyle Bronsdon, Skye Galaxy, Red Heaven, Beth Odets, Ganjo Mokeev, The Matthew Show, The Follow, Grace McDunnough, David Csiszer, James Olmos (AcousticEnergy), Harry Frychester, Kevin M. Thomas, SaraMarie Philly, Nance Brody, Strum Diesel, Gina Stella, AMForte Clarity,  Dan Russo, Pilgrim (Pete Mroz),  Don Galaga, Josie Anderton, Christopher Quan, Suzen Juel, Lindi Moo, Seth Regan (Mankind), LizAday, Phemie Alcott, TerryLynn Melody, Tone Uriza, Tristyn Homewood, Twin Ghost, Strummer Vultee, and Blair Bond...and some  classic finds of Mimi Carpenter, Gina Gracemount, Max Kleene, and Clairede Dirval - and so forth.

Mackenzie’s Mumblings: “But None Of It’s Real, Right?” Mackenzie Abbot reporting

Ever since I plucked up the courage to sign up to Second Life some 3 summers ago, one thing never fails to amaze me.  The class of idiot you get in SL is something else.  Those no-life douche bags and all round bampots who blue waffle their way from day to day, hoping for a life, a job and, maybe, just maybe, a girlfriend.  The very same people who have no happiness in their lives, so set about making others’ lives hell too.  Note how I never included the abbreviations RL nor SL in the previous remark; simply because the line between RL and SL is usually (to quote the waiter played by John Cleese in the Monty Python film “The Meaning Of Life”) “waffer theen”.  People try and distance their real lives and their virtual ones and, to their credit, most do, or do a damn fine job!  Or, at least, do a damn fine job of pretending to.  Who’s to know anyway?

But I digress gentle reader, however I promise I’ll mop it up after, as long as you respect me in the morning.

So why should people get upset when something happens online that we don’t like?  When there are things such as block/kick/bank or simply ignoring people.  Well, some people just aren’t that strong to simply forget about it.  As we all know, behind my avatar, behind your avatar and everyone else’s avatar, there’s a real human being.  Flesh, blood, bones…the lot.  Not every human being has the capacity to easily block out the shock from seeing or hearing things said or done to them or others.

Take a very close friend of mine, we’ll call her Alison for the sake of this story.  Ali is, quite frankly, one of the most beautiful people I know, both physically and mentally.  She recently split from her SL partner after he became insanely jealous about her for no reason.  He accused her of sleeping around and whoring herself about, simply because she never jumped into his IM’s as quick as he wanted.  Alison is a businesswoman in SL and she has put thousands of hours and dollars into making her business a success and she was in pieces after not only abusing her directly, but indirectly through others.  The once unflappable Alison was starting to show signs of crumbling.  With the support of her friends, she didn’t get to the point where she broke, but she wasn’t her usual self for a few days.  The words of one person caused the mighty to become a shadow and that, in my opinion, should be treated with the contempt it deserves, only tenfold.  How dare anyone think they can take a beautiful person, monkey with her feelings and toss her aside!

But none of it is real is it?
Sadly, despite being a bunch of pixels and prims, it’s very real, and it’s widespread.  The ass-hats are coming, batten down the hatches boys!  As I’ve said before, every avatar has a human, and we all still bleed if your prick us.  Alison is, thankfully, back to her old sassy self and has described “it” (him) as “nothing more than something to do”.  She has showed remarkable grace by not retaliating.  She has simply been boosted by her friends and has moved on with her life.  Some people, aren’t so lucky.

Another friend, Diana, quit Second Life for good after taking years of abuse at the hands of the ass-hat brigade.  But hers is a slightly different story.  Diana is one tough lady.  She will tell you things plain and simple from day 1.  If she doesn’t like you or gets the wrong vibe from you, that’s it.

This aside, the trolls in their various shapes and sizes (and levels of density) used to try and trip her up and she enjoyed nothing more than troll bashing of an evening.  She was the kindest woman I ever had the pleasure of knowing in Second Life but she decided to stop being an idiot’s play-toy and lost interest in Second Life completely in Feb 2014.  Last I heard she runs a catering company in Montana and she’s “doing rather well thank you”.
Sitting in my home, slowly working my way through a pack of Banana Twinkies, listening to Crosby Stills and Nash’s epic 1979 album “Chicago Sunroof”, I despair for human kind, especially the species that frequents virtual worlds and infects people with their poison.  The ultimate test of whether these lunatics survive is whether Linden Labs can man-up and start taking positive steps to kill it before it grows.  “Oh but I have First Amendment rights! You can’t take that away from me!”

True.
However, I don’t see anywhere in any constitution or state of law in America or any other country that gives you the right to ruin other peoples happiness for the sake of you getting your kicks.  In fact, if you want to start quoting century’s old documents, shall we start quoting the bible?

No, I didn’t think so.
Just be nice to each other, for crying out loud.  Life’s too short!

Event Coverage Recap of SLE & Lanai Jarrico's 10th Anniversary in Second Life- Debby Sharma Reporting...

Photography Credits: Maximillian Merlin

D-Day had finally arrived. It was the 9th of May, the day that sponsors, fan club and staff members of SL Enquirer were eagerly waiting for. It was the day when we were all looking forward to celebrating 10 years of The SL Enquirer and the 10th rezz day for Lanai Jarrico.

About an hour prior to the start of the event, the staff gathered to get ready for the big party, jotting the last minute notes. Just before 1pm, guests started arriving. The paparazzi were waiting by the red carpet to get a shot of SLebrity for their welcome to the yacht party. Cameras flashed like glittering stars as the women stepped out wearing beautiful gowns and gentlemen in their tuxedos and suits. The staff proudly flaunted the red, white and black colours of the SLE logo, with the supporters wearing lovely coloured gowns. Everyone looked at their best. Lanai wore a dress created for her especially by Skew Creations owners,  Milae & Mackenzie Abbot.

The party began with Anek Fuchs’ live performance and Mackenzie Abbot hosted, greeting the guests. As guests arrived, vodka, martini, gin, tonic and tequila spilled over at the bar. It was an open bar and everyone had a glass to enjoy. The couples danced together. The gentlemen asked the beautiful ladies to join them to the floor. The party continued with tunes played by Dj Zephyr Windgate, a special dance performance by The Night Theatre and Dj Mack wound things down afterwards/

Bixyl Shuftan, SL News Reporter and Jay Nighthammer of the Night theatre also joined in to celebrate. Among the guests who came to wish Lanai Jarrico and her team the best were Aleva of The Night Theatre Dance Troup, Jenza Misfit of Rendezvous II, Trinity Yazimoto of Petit Chat Art and Fashion, IrishGent of Seychelles Isles, and Vanna St Laurent of St. Tropez.

Most of the readers will know about Lanai and SL Enquirer, I managed to grab the rezzday girl for a few moments for quick chat

Debby Sharma: How did you start this journey and how is it so far?

Lanai Jarrico: My virtual world media journey began in The SIMS Online in January of 2003 when I first set foot into the virtual world concept.  It was introduced to me by my brother who knew I love playing the SIMS PC game. He had come home from college and told me about it. I was intrigued by the idea of one world community of people from all over the world sharing the same space. From day one I was hooked and I knew it was a special place. It took me about a year to learn the culture and make some friends. Due to the crazy experiences I was witnessing and the assortment of colourful personalities generating drama in that community, I thought it would be a fun idea to create a newspaper to share with my small circle of friends. So on October 4th 2004 The TSO Enquirer was launched.  I would write about the funny things going on and share it with them. We would sit around a hookah (a bubble machine as it was called in that virtual world) and talk and laugh about the many things that were happening.  Before I knew it they shared it with their friends and their friends shared it with their friends until it went viral. Not too long after, the RP Mafia families began using it as a bridge of communication between them and it exploded in readership. It has gotten to the point that people who began to migrate to Second Life were talking about it before I even set foot in SL. Within a year, I was contacted by Filmmakers from France who had heard about my paper in Second Life. They created an account in The SIMS Online to look for me. They were working on a documentary about people involved in virtual worlds and flew from France to meet me. For three days I was interviewed and filmed and on their last day they suggested I migrate my newspaper into Second Life. At first I was reluctant because I had heard it was a sexual orientated game. It took me a few months before I decided to give it a look and on May 9th 2005, Lanai Jarrico was rezzed in Second Life and I transitioned The TSO Enquirer into The SL Enquirer and it has grown into what it is today.

Debby Sharma: Any memories of this journey that is special to your heart?

Lanai Jarrico: Within this 10 year journey there have been many special memories that touched my heart so I can’t choose just one. Every experience and person I’ve met along my journey has left a piece of inspiration with me. One of the most memorable times is when a random avatar approached me during my first couple of months in Second Life and asked to take my snapshot. Little did I know it would become a catalyst that would catapult me and the SL Enquirer into virtual super stardom and make the people in my real world realized that what I was doing was not just a game to me. That snapshot ended up being a main attraction in an Exhibition in the Soho District in New York City by well known artist Franco and Ava Mattes. The show was called 13 Most Beautiful Avatars.  I was invited as a special guest and the welcome I got was nothing short of amazing. I was being approached by strangers who saw me as some kind of celebrity at that event and my family who had come with me got to see exactly what I was doing and how it affected people. From that point on my friends and family accepted what I was doing and in Second Life fans and readership increased substantially. I never would have thought that a simple idea meant for my small circle of friends would grow into this.

Debby Sharma: How did you feel at the big party?

Lanai Jarrico: The feeling I had at my 10th year Rezzday was nothing short of amazing. Looking back at a decade of hard work, sacrifices and dedication to The SL Enquirer makes me feel accomplished and proud of the work I have done. I feel humbled by the outpouring of love and support by the SL community and grateful for the opportunity to express myself and share my thoughts and creation with others who have a passion for writing and documenting their virtual world journey. I’m also thankful for all the fans that appreciate what we do for the Second Life community.

Media is very important, more than most realize. In the virtual world just like in the real world, media is the glue that binds the experiences, events and stories of our lives and makes them eternal. It is much more than one person talking to another, it is mass communication that has evolved into a global phenomenon and I am honored to have SLE be part of documenting our virtual history.

Debby Sharma: What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?

Lanai Jarrico: I would like to say thank you to each and every one who has supported us through the years. Whether it was contributing to our news or reading it. Each of you is a part of it.

The party ended with a short a speech by Lanai Jarrico, a transcript of which now follows:

“Hi friends. Welcome to SLE’s 10th Anniversary and my rezzday SLebrity Yacht Party! You all look truly amazing and I hope you are all having a fabulous time.” She talked about her past decade experience in Second Life, “ I guess I’ll start from day one when I arrived looking like a pastey noob doing a penguin walk, homeless, shoeless and friendless on the grid trying to figure out my dashboard. After that hurdle that I’m sure you all can relate to, I got it all figured out. That is when SLE’s roots began to grow like a relentless weed that haters gave up trying to get rid of and just let it grow out of control. Everything that happens in SL is Inspiration for me to write or come up with ideas. It has certainly be an extraordinary journey with ups, downs, twists and turns but I have arrived to this point somewhat unscathed with a few greys I can call wisdom. With each year that passes I have collected a lot of memories, snapshots, had fun and somewhat crazy adventures. I have met so many amazing people that I can call friends.”

She continued to say, “This is truly a unique place and everyone one of you is a star in this virtual world. Each of us has a reason for being here. What we do contributes to the SL community and it affects the people we come in contact with. If it wasn’t for our differences there wouldn’t be motivation to learn from each other. It is uniquely our world that we have created for ourselves and share with the people around us. Today is a true testament of the possibilities. I don’t know where the future of Second Life will take us but I am hopeful that we never lose this sense of community and fun.” She promised, “I promise to continue to serve this community as long as I am able by sharing The SL Enquirer with anyone who reads it or is a part of it in some way.” Finally, she thanked M.Y. Studio Productions, The Night Theater, Chippendales of SL, sponsors and everyone for being there and celebrating the special day.

SL Capital Exchange Comments on Skill Gaming Application Process- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

SL Capital Exchange was established in 2007 and is a stock market simulation game of skill. It was purchased by Skip Oceanlane in January of 2011 and served the Second Life community for three years until LL’s new skill gaming policy halted CapEx’s operations on November 1, 2014.  The SL Enquirer was able to get an exclusive candid interview with Skip Oceanlane about Capex’s current status and what’s to expect from this lucrative stock market simulation game.

Interview with Skip Oceanlane
Lanai Jarrico: Skip can you give a brief description of what Capex is and how long it has been in SL?
Skip Oceanlane: Capital Exchange has existed within Second Life since 2007.  I bought the exchange in January, 2011, and turned it into what it is today - a stock market simulation game of skill.

Lanai Jarrico: Second Life is strict on gaming. How has this affected CapEx operations?

Skip Oceanlane: The new skill gaming policy has in effect halted Capital Exchange's operations since November 1, 2014.  Furthermore, since the initial announcement of the new skill gaming policy in July 2014, activity decreased significantly due to uncertainty.

Lanai Jarrico: Yes I have noticed your hiatus. It is very unfortunate how this has affected Capex.  Can you explain the gaming application process?

Skip Oceanlane: Linden Lab instituted a skill gaming application process where you pay an initial fee to apply, and then completed some general questions about your game.  Creators and Operators both had to apply. After a wait of 2-3 months, a legal representative of Linden Lab made contact, and then the applicant would give specific information about their game.

Lanai Jarrico: So you have applied? If so what has been the outcome so far?

Skip Oceanlane: Yes, I sent in my application the first day the policy was announced. As of today, I still do not have a yes or no answer from Linden Lab on my skill gaming application.

Lanai Jarrico: What do you think is causing the delay in this process?

Skip Oceanlane: It's my personal opinion that Linden Lab is doing all it can to dissuade anyone from getting approval through this process.  The law firm representing me has submitted tons of specific information to the attorney representing Linden Lab, as well as e-mails and phone calls back and forth.  Each time we submit information, Linden Lab requests new information, or says the information we submitted needs to be in more detail.

Lanai Jarrico: Do you think this has to do with taxes and that sort of legal thing since this is a global platform anyone can have access to? It seems fishy that they are conducting themselves this way.

Skip Oceanlane: I believe Linden Lab is trying to protect themselves legally.  I even agree with them that they must do due diligence to ensure that all operations inside their game meet the letter of the law. However, I think they are going too far, and hurting their own business.  As you know, Second Life has been declining for years.  This new restrictive skill gaming policy meant to shut down most skill gaming related businesses will only further help their decline.

Lanai Jarrico: I agree the way they have been making decisions is a direct result of our community’s decline.  It sounds like you are doing everything they asked of you and being compliant is there anything else you would like to point out about this problem? Will you continue to try for the sake of Capex and its members?

Skip Oceanlane: Yes, I have done everything asked by Linden Lab's legal representative, and I believe the legal information submitted was more than enough to allow me to continue operations within Second Life.  I do question why no one has been approved after October 2014. I wasn't even contacted by a legal representative until after then. I suspect that they favored certain people and their games, and everyone else wasn't given the same fair consideration. I believe at this point, only those that threaten legal action will get approval. I am in the process of hiring a new law firm in the hopes that perhaps they can obtain the information Linden Lab is requesting, which is a 40-state breakdown of their laws and how Capital Exchange meets the "predominance test" in each jurisdiction.

Lanai Jarrico: That's interesting.  I wonder if it has to do with their interest in starting the new grid.

Skip Oceanlane: I think it has everything to do with that.

Lanai Jarrico: If that turns out to be the case would you take Capex there and try the application process again?

Skip Oceanlane: No, I have no plans to relocate to any new grid owned by Linden Lab.  I want to state to your readers that I have been a loyal player of Second Life since 2007.  I have paid tier fees since then in excess of US$100,000 on all the sims I have owned. In addition, the game activity created about US$250,000 a year in Linden Dollar activity - some years even higher.

Lanai Jarrico: Impressive. Those are high numbers for LL to be delaying you and treating your money as if it was just  game credits.

Skip Oceanlane: I am tremendously disappointed at how poorly I have been treated during this process, and even comments from Linden Lab's legal department have been disingenuous.

Lanai Jarrico: If they aren’t taking members like you seriously, I can only imagine how easily it would be for them to pull the plug on the rest of us.

Skip Oceanlane: I don’t think they are close to “pulling the plug” however they certainly aren’t providing enough electricity and causing us brownouts, so to speak.  Lanai, all I am asking is to be treated fairly.  Their request for a 40-state breakdown of each of their laws and how they pertain to Capital Exchange's legality is impossible unless I had a few hundred thousand US$ hanging around.

Lanai Jarrico: Understood. So where do you go from here?

Skip Oceanlane: I am in the process of seeking new counsel to see if it's possible for me to give Linden Lab what they are asking for. As to where do I go from here?  Forward.  I have made the decision to stop using the Linden Dollar, and operate on the slcapex.com website independently of Second Life.  It was a tough decision to make because I still love the game of Second Life, but Linden Lab and their legal people left me no alternative. CapEx players will still be able to check their balances, and reset their passwords in-world of Second Life, however I am switching to my own currency, the CapEx Dollar (CD$).  Furthermore, I will be allowing non-Second Life players to join Capital Exchange, which will increase our potential membership by the millions.

Lanai Jarrico: How will they be able to exchange their CapEx  Dollars into real cash?

Skip Oceanlane: I will be using PayPal for people to cash in and out. My exchange fee will only be .99%, as opposed to Linden Lab who charges 3.5%.  Also for now I will be keeping my in-world sim of Capital Exchange, and my avatar Skip Oceanlane will be sitting in the usual chair behind the Information Desk.  I want to keep the "virtual" part of the game, but 99% of everything occurred on our website anyways, so other than the currency change, not much will be different – except for a soon to be done overhaul of the website for a new modern look.
Lanai Jarrico: That sounds like a safe option and quite lucrative for Capex.
Skip Oceanlane: Yes.  People will fund their accounts via credit card or debit card, then buy CapEx Dollars.  They then can cash out their earnings, pay the .99% fee, and receive the US$ to their PayPal accounts. No real difference than what they do with Linden Dollars and Second Life.
Lanai Jarrico: You are basically cutting out the middle man (LL) and doing it legally in the real world using a virtual world target audience.

Skip Oceanlane: Yes, that is correct.

Lanai Jarrico: Any final thoughts?

Skip Oceanlane: Yes.  I wanted to thank everyone who has played Capital Exchange over the years, especially those who have hung in there during this recent period of adversity caused by Linden Lab.  As promised, I have found a way to keep the game alive, and now it will grow to new levels and be better than ever before.  I have made a substantial investment in the software, so look for an entirely new look with new features soon – and even a new website address of www.onlinecapex.com.  If “LL” doesn’t want me anymore, then time to drop the “SL” and move forward.  Thanks Lanai for helping me tell my side of the story.

Lanai Jarrico: You heard it here first.   CapEx lives on!

Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society and has been active, and continually growing in Second Life for 10 years. In 2005, the first Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) was attended by a few hundred avatars and raised almost $5,000 US dollars for the American Cancer Society. As of July 2014 RFL Of SL ranks number 17th out of 5000 teams worldwide in donations received. We have brought in over 2 million US dollars to help with the fight against cancer. This year our Relay weekend will be held on July 17th and 18th.

Spring Hunts Happening Now in Second Life- Tea Couturier Reporting...

Spring Hunts are just as fun as Christmas and Easter hunts if that is what you love to do in Second Life. If you pick the right hunts you will find something either you always wanted or something which you never thought of but glad you found.
I have participated in my fair share of hunts and am  proud to say I have picked good ones to participate in.  I’m here to help guide you in the right direction if you got the hunting bug.

Boudreaux lost his marbles and he needs them back in time for the tournament! Wearing your HUD, find all twenty marbles and hear funny stories along the way. When your HUD is completely filled, return to hunt HQ to collect your rewards. The hunt takes place in New Toulouse, an early 1900s-themed Louisiana community celebrating its 7th year in Second Life.

This hunt spans from  May 9th to May 30th
