Virtual friendships: Do you have friends in Second Life? – Joymell Reporting...

Every day a growing number of people connect virtually and devote a considerable part of their time to virtual interactions in the search of friendships, love relationships and jobs, among other reasons.

In Second Life you can make friends within minutes.  Meet people of different nationalities and different cultures and lifestyles. But are these friendships that we establish in Second Life true? Reliable? Viable? Real?

These are questions that we reflect on.

It’s seemingly easier to make virtual friends than real ones. Possibly it’s the relative anonymity that the virtual world offers that makes the process easier. But the evolution of a virtual friendship is exactly the same that occurs when we make our real life friends. However, some say that the friendships we have in the real world, are truer than those established in the virtual world and virtual relationships have weaknesses from the point of view of life and sense of human relations and their complexity.

People can create personalities and identities that are not always consistent with reality.  Relations mediated by the Internet can be a decoy, suggesting that virtual friendships are not necessarily as effective as real ones. Many feel that these relationships are weakened by the lack of a real human presence.

The fact is that virtual friendships, as well as conventional ones, revolve around communicating with one another. When we interact with our virtual friends, we feel that many of these relationships can be lasting and know when there is or isn’t an emotional authenticity to them. Many of us go beyond everyday friendship and cultivate professional and artistic projects with our virtual friends. These virtual friendships, in most cases, do not transfer to the real environment and remain "online".

What’s interesting is that people in the virtual world, are given the opportunity to unlock almost all of real life’s limitations and express desires and fantasies of all kinds. For example, a shy person, or an unhappy person with low self-esteem, or a person stressed by work, can discover new possibilities and overcome these limitations in this environment where "everything is possible": the shy can be outgoing, the unhappy find that they can be sexy and desired, and the stressed feel relaxed and without pressure. From behind the computer screen, many of us can hide the worst facets of our personality, or on the other hand, discover the wonderful gifts that can be found when interacting virtually with others.

In my opinion it’s important that everyone enters into virtual friendships with their eyes open.  To think that there are no rules of engagement when establishing these friendships would be foolish.  Many residents in Second Life, maintain and grow their list of online friends, while others do not. Why is that the case? It depends on your motivation.  Those who maintain their friendships keep in constant contact with said friends.  Frequent but not excessive interaction facilitates the consolidation of the virtual friendship. You have to maintain a certain balance, otherwise you may have the opposite effect and start to bother and annoy people, and end up losing the potentially lasting friendships.

In conclusion we can say that a virtual friendship allows us to explore amazing possibilities which are often impossible in the real world. Moreover, these friendships can save us from loneliness, encourage us to forge ahead, facilitate our projects and possibly even surprise us.  Unfortunately as with our real friends, some of our virtual friends will let us down.

Spotlight on The 1920's Berlin Project - Camury Reporting...

Take a trip back in time to Berlin in the 1920s and enjoy this interesting political and cultural moment.

The 1920's Berlin Project is a historic community role-playing in Second Life that simulates daily life in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. This is one of the few sims in Second Life that is based on a historical period.

Teleporting to this region gives us the feeling that we actually are in Berlin in the 20s, in a realistic and authentic way. The project was conceived within the virtual world to help people understand Weimar (an unofficial designation for the German state between 1919 and 1933).

This sim has rules for all visitors. Before exploring this great city, people should dress in the 1920’s style (you can pick up free period costumes at the entrance), or buy some clothes from the vintage shops in town. The main idea is to see that all visitors and residents feel as if they belong to the period of time.

The sim has various roleplay elements to it, in as much as you will find residents living and working on it. Regular townsfolk behave gracefully and it is common for residents and visitors to use German phrases to greet one another.  In the city there are many English-speaking visitors and several other languages are also regularly spoken.

When walking the streets, you will see buildings which are exact replicas of real buildings, such as the exclusive and luxurious Hotel Adlon, the Alexanderplatz station, Zum Nussbaum inn and Brandenburg Gate. There are also other buildings in the architectural style of this era, such as the large block of Bauhaus-style apartments.

By exploring the place, you will find amazing modern houses where rich people in the live in the lap of luxury and leisure. Walking through the alleys and the dirty narrow streets, you will see small apartments where the poor working class live.

You can visit some of the most popular places in the city, such as:

Der Keller Tanzlokal (Nightclub)
-  a very crowded nightclub located in a wet basement, in one of the lanes of the city, where anyone can dance the Charleston or chat, and knock back a beer or two.

Asta Cinema - theater visitors may attend cartoons, news and movies that belong to this period.

Cabaret Eldorado - a fun club which the gay community attended.

Odeon Theatre and The Hindenburg Schule - are cultural spaces where visitors can find educational activities, films, dance, and live entertainment.

Schloss Museum – when exploring this museum visitors will find several exhibitions. When I was there, they were exhibiting old photos of Berlin in the 20s.  The Berlin Project 1920 has been maintained thanks to tenants living in the SIM, supporters and random donations from visitors. The residences in the city are almost always busy.

Come and see with your own eyes! Travel back in time, and enjoy beautiful Berlin in 1920 in Second Life.

GeekSpeak - Where Next in Space? Join the Discussion Saturday May 21st at 12pm SLT

Space, when will we break the final frontier?  Right now entrepreneurship in space has become a lot cheaper.  Soon we will see the first asteroid mining or maybe a private company will land on Mars.

Where will we go first?  What will we do first in space?  How long will it take before we become a permanent space culture?  Will space exploration bring prosperity to Earth?  Is there any sense in going at all?

This week we will discuss the near future of space travel.  Come and dream with us about booking a room in the first space hotel or spending your holidays in Shackleton crater on the moon.

The Ways People with Disabilities Are Gaining a Better Quality of Life

image borrowed from morguefile.com

Living with a disability can be difficult at the best of times. Disabilities come in all different variations, whether they cause pain, immobility, or even affect mental health. For many sufferers, invisible disabilities mean that they may not look unwell, but actually feel far from fit and healthy. As society becomes more aware and more accommodating of those with disabilities, it’s becoming easier for less abled people to experience a good quality of life. With more and more treatments becoming available and an increasing number of people learning more about, and understanding, a whole range of disabilities, those suffering from various conditions are able to take control of their lives and do more and more of the things that they enjoy.

Medical Marijuana

Since the legalization of marijuana use for medical purposes in a number of states in the U.S.A., many people affected by disabilities, chronic pain or even mental health problems have found a both legal and natural method of dealing with their symptoms and being able to cope with day to day life. With painkilling, relaxing and even sleep-inducing properties, those who previously suffered every day have been given a new lease of life with the legalization of this drug allowing them to use it to target various symptoms. If you have a disability or other condition which you think medical marijuana may be able to help you with, visit this marijuana finder to discover more.

Improved Homes

Gone are the days when disabled people had to struggle to get around in conventional homes or even make do by sleeping downstairs on the sofa or using a commode, for example. Today, government grants and aid have made it possible for home renovations to take place in order to make a property more accessible for a disabled person, whether this involves making a home more wheelchair-friendly or adding extra features which make it less of a painful experience for somebody with a disability to go about their day to day lives. Thanks to this, an increasing number of people suffering from a range of disabilities and conditions are able to live comfortably and with minimal struggles in their own home.

Using the Internet

In many cases, the internet has been an absolute godsend for those suffering with disabilities and other painful, debilitating conditions. Whereas just a few years ago disabled people would have had to struggle doing things such as going to the store for groceries, for example, the internet has made it possible for them to order their groceries online to be delivered to their home without even having to get out of their chair or bed. The internet has also made it easier for disabled people to communicate with health professionals, using services such as video call therapy or even online pharmacies to order prescription refills. The internet is also home to vast support networks for people suffering from all kinds of disabilities, providing support and friendship.

In 2016, living with a disability does not have to ruin your life. Thanks to technology, increased awareness and legislation, those with disabilities can experience a good quality of life.

Are you Textile or Naturist?

In naturist speak, textile or textilist is a non-naturist person, non-naturist behavior or non-naturist facilities, e.g. the textile beach starts at the flag, or they are a mixed couple – he’s naturist, she’s textile. What are you?

A generalized RL definition of naturism, or nudism, is a cultural and political movement practicing, advocating and defending social nudity, most but not all of which takes place on private property. The term may also refer to a lifestyle based on personal, family and/or social nudism.

According to the XIV Congress of the International Naturist Federation (AgdeFrance, 1974), naturism is:
a way of life in harmony with nature characterized by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect and respect for others and for the environment.

As in real life, naturism or nudism is a ‘thing’ in Second Life.

It would appear that there are some fundamental differences between nudism and naturism.  Nudism is the act of being naked, while naturism is a lifestyle which at various times embraced nature, environment, respect for others, self-respect, crafts, healthy eating, vegetarianism, teetotalism, non-smoking, yoga, physical exercise and pacifism as well as nudity.  Therefore it goes without saying that it’s nudism that is practiced in SL.

For Second Life residents interested in social nudity there are a number of clothes free beaches to choose from and in my opinion one of the most beautiful nudist beaches currently available in Second Life can be found on Kaiya Islands – Turtle Coast.

The Turtle Coast is a friendly and welcoming nudist community.  Perfect weather, white sandy beaches, palm trees, the splashing of waterfalls in the distance...  Or sandstone and palm trees, Balinese huts, romantic hideaways, a grotto and a waterfall complete the perfect jungle setting. Fancy a dip? The water in the Lagoon is balmy (unless it’s frozen over as an ice rink in winter) it’s ideal for swimming or just letting your cares float away.

Kaiya Manbi is the creator and owner of Kaiya Islands which incorporates the nudist Turtle Beach.  I asked her why she chose to include a nudist beach in her region. She said “In SL everyone is gorgeous, and deep down inside, all everyone wants to do here is take their clothes off and show their bods, so I figured that’s what I should make, a nude beach, and it happened.

I felt that as soon as one person wears clothing, even if it’s just a bikini, or flip flops, it makes others feel a little self-conscious, and they end up putting something on and in no time, half the beach would be clothed.  I felt in order to get everyone to really relax in their nudity, not allow clothing at all.

Everyone comes to the beach for different reasons, some come just to hang out and chat, some come to meet people, some to fall in love, and some, just to get their rocks off. I think it’s important to respect each person’s individual line that they draw.  If members do that, then the beach works.  Because of the group join fees, we have kept our members a little more above the average game player in SL, and as a result we tend to get a very respectful crowd most of the time.”

Kaiya continued “Don’t be scared to take your clothes off, let your personality shine through your avi and have fun! Oh, and remember behind every cartoon avi in SL is a real person, sitting alone at his/her computer, full of their own life issues, pain and experience.  Be gentle, be respectful and be nice. And as Dory from "Finding Nemo" would say, just keep swimming..."

All you textilist's out there, it's time to shed your clothing and let your inner nudist out.
