TO MESH OR NOT TO MESH Part 2 -MESH HEADS - Dean Lawson Reporting

If, in your journey through Second Life, you encounter a severed head floating through the air it may be poor Yorick, or at least his ghost, but more likely, it is a mesh head whose body has yet to rez. In a previous article I asked Second Life Residents to discuss the pros and cons of using a mesh body, this time we discussed the heads.

In an interview with Ilsa Hesse-Heron (ilsa.hesse), Ilsa replied : “for some reason, and I can’t really tell you why, I love mesh bodies, feet, hands, etc, but mesh heads kind of creep me out O.O. … maybe its that to begin with they all kind of looked the same … that, and they were all kind of emotionless...

Barry Smithson replied : LOL it’s funny you came up with this because me and my better half was at a venue and all we saw were mesh heads and no bodies.

When asked why she purchased a mesh head ღƧραиƘʏღ (bigcupofstfu) responded : my friends pressured me into it lol … I was not use to using a whole alpha system so that was confusing. Also the mesh takes longer to rez but it looks much better quality wise … the only downside I notice is the rezzing. It takes a while for me to see my own head and sometimes I have to relog so other people can see it. Other than that I have no problems.

Blogger and Second Life photographer Barbara Mali had this to say on the subject : “pros, i think avies look much better and realistic, more proportioned, some of the animations are nice, also the blinking ... it is good to take pics … cons: you have to use another hud, some are complicated, i think we are losing our “identity” we all look in the same way now … i think they are working in new projects so you can modify them so they can be personalized, now there are many options and models, trying demos is a nightmare, there are appliers and so many add ons, it is insane … another con, they are expensive

Mesh Builder Lakota Valkai had many insightful comments on the subject :  I am a fan of mesh, but i will also say it can be a pain in the ass for the new and inexperienced to work and deal with … inexperienced users have trouble with mesh sometimes due to whats known as “rigging” ... rigging either will, or will not permit you to modify an objects size and proportions ... With clothing, modification is almost always necessary … and if its "Rigged" then you cant alter its size … the realism with mesh is more easily attained … But mesh is expensive because of the time involved in creating it

SL Artist and Machinima producer Ozymandius King replied : Mesh is great for photography and machinima but I think the next step is to start creating mesh heads that the user can customize, not just the color of the skin and the hair, but the cheek bones, the nose, the brow the lips etc. As of the moment I prefer to use older system human heads over mesh because I can change the expression and manipulate the facial features to create a unique avatar which is important for visually telling a story.

GeekSpeak – the Fermi paradox: where are the aliens?

“Where is everybody?” – Enrico Fermi.
The Drake equation suggests that there are many technologically advanced civilisation in our galaxy.  But if they do exist, where are they?  Why have they not come to Earth?  Why do we see no sign of them?  No radio messages, no von Neumann probes, so sign of Dyson spheres.

There is no reason to think there is anything unusual about Earth or about our solar system.  Exoplanets are commonplace.  Life began on Earth as soon as it could begin so it must surely have occurred on many other planets.  Plenty of them must be much older than Earth and must have produced intelligent species that want to explore the galaxy, just as we want to.  Where are they?

Are we looking in the wrong place or in the wrong way?  Do advanced civilisation always destroy themselves before going into space?  Are we the very first?  Are the others avoiding us for some reason?

Bring your telescopes to GeekSpeak and give us your answer to the paradox.

Club Carnage: Through Thick and Thin- LilyaLuv Reporting...

Club Carnage today

They’ve seen it all. Club Carnage has been around for 11 years and owner, Caemlyn Witherspoon, tells us her story about how she came to be the owner the club after an emotional struggle - and that time pensis and vaginas kept dropping on the floor.

Caemlyn Witherspoon

Caemlyn shares the genesis story and evolution of Club Carnage in a notecard to all guests. As the story goes: Club Carnage was originally founded by Klayton Vaughan who sold the club and the sim it was on to Angela Glitter. After Angela Glitter suddenly sold the sim while Carnage staff were having a party, Carnage was left without a home. Since Carnage’s staff cared deeply about the club, they put their money together to rent land to house the club. As the Club got more popular, nearby residents complained that they couldn’t get into their own homes because Carnage had filled up the sim, so the club had 24 hours to leave the land they were on. Caemlyn came to be the current owner of Club Carnage after the other owners backed out, leaving Caemlyn in charge. As Caemlyn recalls, “I remember tears running down my cheeks as I tore down the walls of the old place, wondering how I was going to do this when I had never run a club before!”

What inspires you to keep Club Carnage running after all these years?
Carnage is more than a club to a lot of SL avatars. It became home to them. Even when it is slow I still want a place for people to come home to if they want. I want people to know we will always be here.

When was the most satisfying moment for you during Club Carnage’s 10 years on SL?
Carnage satisfies me many many times but the most satisfying moment had to be in 2007 when we had 108 guests here along with 2 Security, 2 Dancers, a Host and a DJ and I looked out over all that and saw how much fun everyone was having.

If there was one thing you would change about Club Carnage, what would it be?
You know, I honestly don't think I would change one thing about it. Each thing that happened has made it what it is today.

Club-goers

What is the weirdest thing you’ve seen happen at Club Carnage?
Two instances come to mind. A woman was here dancing and obviously AFK. Suddenly her water broke and her baby fell out of her unto the floor. It bounced across the floor a few times. She grabbed it up and left.

The second time was when attachments would fall off of you randomly. There were penises and vagina's laying all over the dance floor. I got an IM the next day that "Avatar567 has returned your ass to you from XXX Sim. Your ass can be found in your lost and found folder." Got my ass handed to me!

What do you think it is about Club Carnage that attracts visitors?
I like to think it's the fact that we welcome everyone. We don't care if your avatar is a cardboard box or the most sophisticated avatar marketplace sells - we welcome all the same.

Club Carnage’s VIPs

What is your vision for Club Carnage in the future?
I would love to see SL flourish like it did back in 2007-2008 and for the Club to be filled with people laughing, talking, dancing and having fun. Club Carnage will strive to keep up with the times and demands of our customers.

What would you like your visitors to know about Club Carnage?
I want them aware of our age and that all are welcome.

Visit Club Carnage’s Facebook page for upcoming events.

Saints and Sinners Debuts in Second Life

Sexy sculpture by Cloak Fairigfule

Saints and Sinners made its debut last weekend and includes pieces from four talented artists. We speak with Saints and Sinners founder, Vardasilver Spearsong to find out why she started this exhibition and to learn more about the artists involved in the current exhibition.

SLE: What inspired you to get involved in this type of exhibit?
Varda:  Well that is rather funny, I had bought my first ever adult parcel on a sim, and thought this is a lot more freedom of expression here.  Everyone seems to be free thinking, even though sometimes it is not so nice especially with griefers, it is nice to be around other adults.  I had met a very talented artist named FarSoFar who is an amazing artist about a year ago, and I am married to a real life professional photographer who’s works are also being displayed.  I thought this was an opportunity to do something back for the artist who’s work I enjoy so much on an almost daily basis, first it started with my husband requesting I do something, then my friend FarSoFar.  It was then my good friend Cloak Fairigfule, also pointed out since it was an adult sim we could show adult works as well.  Since I had some works that were innocent in nature and some that were more adult in nature, I decided it would be a good mix.  It was my best friend RuaelleLionheart who master minded the decision for the gallery name.  Hopefully soon this gallery will grow and we can move to our own parcel dedicated to this gallery!

Artists featured in current exhibition at Saints and Sinners

SLE: Can you tell our readers about the artists who will be featured in the Saints and Sinners Exhibition?
Varda:  Well I will start with my husband Brian Papke.  He has an idol named Joe McNally, who he LOVES and wants to recreate every single shot he can.  After developing his skills at the New York Institute of photography, he started to take on human subjects.  You know, the graduation picture or engagement picture, but recently began to delve into model photography with a good friend of his named Tim Pruitt.  They had a model show up who wanted to do a lingerie shoot, and then it took off from there.  FarSoFar has been a good friend of mine for a while now.  I always saw his post on Facebook, and admired his work, at first I thought he was posting something from google, you know like a lot of people including me do, until I noticed the consistency in his works.  The two things didn’t click until one day we started talking on Second Life.  It was then I was amazed at his skills and had to see if there was a way to get something going in the way of displaying his works as well.  Every piece is expressive and endearing and that is what I love about his works, it really draws you in.  Cloak Farigoule, is also a great artist as well.  If he is not coding games or scripting on SL , he is making custom mesh avatars and other pieces for various customers.  PakennyUsa Cheing, I could not have gotten this far on the gallery without his help.  His works are all done from his iPhone and when he is not chasing blooms, he is off at college, DJ-ing, working on Minecraft project building servers, and various other online type games.

Lovers and sunset

SLE: What types of fine art can guests expect to see at this event?

Varda: They will see dreamy works that will draw them into a different time and place, photography that is seductive and inspiring as well as fun.  they will see a vision of a church and a woman pleasuring herself under one roof.  That what makes this different, a bit of a different kind of heaven under one roof.

SLE: Will any of the pieces be available for sale?

Varda: All pieces on display are for sale, I make sure the artist gets their money for each piece sold, and donations are appreciated.

FarSoFar in Saints and Sinners

Lanai: Is there anything else you would like to share about Saints and Sinners Art exhbition?

Varda: If anyone would like to have their art works displayed here when this cycle is complete, to contact me and give me a bio and three watermarked examples of their artwork or link to their portfolio.

Saints and Sinners Art Exhbition opened to the public on Saturday September 17th  7PM SLT to 9PM SLT.

Come see this exclusive collection and be prepared to be inspired.

Please contact: Vardasilver.Spearsong for more information and additional details regarding this event.
