GeekSpeak – the Fermi paradox: where are the aliens?

“Where is everybody?” – Enrico Fermi.
The Drake equation suggests that there are many technologically advanced civilisation in our galaxy.  But if they do exist, where are they?  Why have they not come to Earth?  Why do we see no sign of them?  No radio messages, no von Neumann probes, so sign of Dyson spheres.

There is no reason to think there is anything unusual about Earth or about our solar system.  Exoplanets are commonplace.  Life began on Earth as soon as it could begin so it must surely have occurred on many other planets.  Plenty of them must be much older than Earth and must have produced intelligent species that want to explore the galaxy, just as we want to.  Where are they?

Are we looking in the wrong place or in the wrong way?  Do advanced civilisation always destroy themselves before going into space?  Are we the very first?  Are the others avoiding us for some reason?

Bring your telescopes to GeekSpeak and give us your answer to the paradox.

GeekSpeak – how should we prepare for a global warming disaster? Saturday , Sept. 17th 12pm SLT

Last week NASA published a new report on climate change.  They say we have only five short years left before a runaway greenhouse effect starts on earth.  If we can’t stop it, we should prepare for it.  So what should we do?

We may be facing enormous floods, massive extinctions, millions of climate refugees, wars to keep out climate refugees, food shortages because of failed crops and cities sinking underwater because of rising sea levels.

Is there any place where we can survive global warming?  Antarctica is a huge continent.  When all the ice has gone maybe we should go and live there.

What plans do you have for the future?  Don’t be scared, be prepared.  Come and prepare with us at GeekSpeak.

GeekSpeak – Space! And our future away from Earth. Join the Discussion on Saturday, September 3rd @12pm SLT

Lots of exciting things to do with space and space travel are happening right now.  It is hard to keep up so let’s all get updated in GeekSpeak.

Then we can discuss why people want to go into space at all.  To meet aliens, form human colonies on other planets, get hold of resources, find out more about the universe?  Why would you go into space?  And what would your profession be there?  Planet seller, colony founder?  Or maybe you would never go and don’t understand why anyone would want to.

Will the next few years be the start of a new era for humanity?  Bring your spacesuit and come talk Space.

GeekSpeak SL – What is intelligence? Does it have an upper limit? Join the discussion Saturday August 6th At 12pm SLT

This week we are wondering what exactly intelligence is and if there is a limit to it.  Is it adequately measured by IQ tests?  Are there different kinds of intelligence?

Are computers more intelligent than humans?  Would a computer be able to get an IQ score of 10,000?  What would that mean?  And how could we test for it?

Will computers be able to enhance their own IQ scores?  If we define intelligence as ‘the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills’ does this mean that there is a self-enforcing system here and no limit?  What if there is a limit and it is reached?

Come to GeekSpeak and discuss what IQ is and what we should do with it.

GeekSpeak – Resource Wars! Saturday, July 30th at Noon SLT

There are some resources on the planet, such as coltan or neodymium, that are very important to us but are only found in a few places.  For instance, neodymium is found only in China.  What will happen if we run out of these resources?  Will the countries where they are mined always be willing to share?  Will we go to war?

Or will the lack of resources lead to new inventions?  For example, if there is no copper will we be forced to start developing carbon circuits in a big way?

What about material that cannot be found anywhere on earth, like He-3, or material that gets lost in space, like helium?  We cannot go to war for that so how do we get new stockpiles of it?

What would a future without all these resources look like? Are we heading for a low technology future?  Stone tools again?  Or will it not go quite that far?  Bring your thinking hats to GeekSpeak.

GeekSpeak – Could Robots Turn Against Us? Let's have a Discussion! July 23rd @ 12pm SLT

Is it dangerous to give robots a certain level of intelligence?  Could they turn against us?  They might be given power they are unable to cope with, such as the robot that ran over a toddler.  Or they might think it is in your best interest.  What if the McDonald’s robot won’t serve you because your fat-index does not allow it?

Is it possible that we will reach a state where everyone has to function within normal parameters or be terminated?  Are we about to hand over our freedoms to silicon matter?

Today we discuss the dangers of giving power to our possible future masters.  Join us!

GeekSpeak – Revolution! Or not? July 2nd at 12pm slt

As we have seen with Brexit, countries are tending to split apart and the number of countries is increasing.  Even Texas wants to leave the USA now.  Maybe there is a Brexit virus on the loose.

Why is this happening?  What happened to the idea of a global village?

How can we find an equilibrium between a government everyone belongs to and a far away group of politicians nobody cares about?  What form of government should we adopt?  Should there be multiple layers of government, maybe with some layers taken by computer AIs?

Is a meritocracy possible at all in a democratic system?

Come to GeekSpeak and discuss far out politics. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Danmu/143/127/51

GeekSpeak - The Internet of Things- Saturday June 18th 12pm SLT

We are at the beginning of a transition towards a society where everything is known. Do you think your pizza is too cold on arrival? The box will know if that is true, along with the delivery time. Is there a traffic jam somewhere? Sensors in every street light will have detected it and re-routed your car. And if you have a heart attack, your t-shirt will call 999 (or 911) and also tell the insurance company that you got it at McDonald's.

How will this change society? Will there be any privacy at all? Is there any escape from it, or should we embrace it? And what future applications can we think of? At what point will we realize that we have truly arrived in this new era?

Come and discuss small devices with big impact at GeekSpeak.

GeekSpeak - What is the Best Form of Government? Saturday June 4th at 12pm

This week we will discuss the different forms of democracy, representative, direct and liquid democracy.  We will also talk about other forms of government such as communism, meritocracy and futarchy.

Which one is best?  What makes a country change its form of government?  Should there be any government in Second Life or on large internet communities such as Facebook?

Is a world government possible? Do you want a world government?  Will it ever be possible to vote on the internet for a local or world government?

Or maybe you think the less government the better?  Is anarchism best of all?

Come and discuss world politics in GeekSpeak

GeekSpeak - Where Next in Space? Join the Discussion Saturday May 21st at 12pm SLT

Space, when will we break the final frontier?  Right now entrepreneurship in space has become a lot cheaper.  Soon we will see the first asteroid mining or maybe a private company will land on Mars.

Where will we go first?  What will we do first in space?  How long will it take before we become a permanent space culture?  Will space exploration bring prosperity to Earth?  Is there any sense in going at all?

This week we will discuss the near future of space travel.  Come and dream with us about booking a room in the first space hotel or spending your holidays in Shackleton crater on the moon.

GeekSpeak - nanobots, do we want them to fix everything in our bodies?

Nanotech is rapidly advancing.  Soon we will have nanobots in our bodies, fixing them, controlling them.  We will have 200 year lifespans, nanobot created organs, new genes.  Do we want that?  Will all human diversity be destroyed and everyone become the nanobot version of the ideal human?  Will they gradually replace every human organ?  Will they put a stop to all human evolution?  Will we all turn into grey goo?

Or do you see nanobots as good and helpful and not frightening at all?  Or maybe you just don't think there will ever be nanobots in human bodies.

Come and discuss the future of nanobots and the human body in GeekSpeak.

Future Imperfect: The Art Of Gem Preiz - Persia Bravin Reporting...

On board a spaceship circling a far distant planet, the Captain stares out of the window of the craft at the unfamiliar landscape beneath him. Soaring watchtowers hewn from jagged rocks thrust high into the alien atmosphere overlooking abandoned landing platforms and bathed by the light of the ships solar panels, he pensively writes into a logbook. The opening page reveals that the year is 2115 and he has blasted away from a dystopian Earth: a planet that is dying, desolate and ravaged by mankind. His logbook reveals his deepest fears, his human frailties and an overwhelming acceptance that life as he knew it might never be the same again.

This dark glimpse of what life could be like in a not so distant future has been brought to present times within Second Life at ‘Wrecks’ – an exhibition at LEA 26 created by SL artist, Gem Preiz. Wrecks takes the viewer on a journey – both emotionally and visually – through a series of logbook entries written on the exhibit’s starry walls and via the colossal pictures of alien landscapes and structures that Gem produces outside of SL using Mandelbulb 3D, a generator of 3D fractal objects and to complete the out of this world experience, Gem has included a haunting soundtrack that wouldn’t be out of place accompanying a movie such as The Martian or Gravity.

“The background of ‘Wrecks’ is a pessimistic future of our planet,” admits Gem. “But I felt it would be interesting to give a human and individual dimension to it, by creating a parallel between the risk of giving up efforts to maintain our planet, and the runaway life of a man who doesn’t want to face his own responsibility and future. Wrecks takes place in 100 years’ time and the fifteen fractal artworks tell of a journey into space along with texts extracted from a logbook and personal mails written by the captain of a spaceship which leaves the Earth. Overall, it gives a vision of the future of our planet, which matches the destiny of the narrator. More futuristic, not very funny, but… holding hope.”

The foreboding atmosphere at Wrecks is almost tangible: from the moment you enter the exhibit through the doors of the Orpheus craft, you are immersed in the life of the Captain and became compelled to discover the outcome of his narrative. But it’s the fractal images that really capture your attention due to their size, intricacy and beauty. “I cut my fractals into plates that I stitch carefully so that the edges are almost invisible,” Gem explains. “It enables me to bring 15 or 20 times more information inworld than with a single texture. The images are much more precise, and when you zoom, you get additional details instead of getting a blurred image. That increases a lot the immersive feeling.”

Visiting Wrecks leaves a long lasting impression on the viewer, and despite his shortcomings, you can’t help but hope for a better destiny for the Captain – and planet Earth. As for his own future, Gem says that he has plans for further artwork and exhibitions in SL that might include “an extended range of digital images: not only fractals. I am also curious about the new technology coming, with virtual reality masks, to see how I could use it.” If you visit Wrecks, be sure to see Gem’s other exhibition entitled ‘Vestiges’ too, because there is no one better in SL art right now than Gem Preiz for showing us how the choices we make can affect our present – and our future.

Wrecks and Vestiges run until the end of June

GeekSpeak SL - Which Animals Will Go With Us Into Space? Discussion Saturday, April 23, 2016 12pm SLT

There are spiders, fish, frogs, mice, water bears and bacteria living in or on the International Space Station.  What about future bases in space or on moons or planets?  What will happen when people live permanently on Mars or the moon?  What animals will we take, by choice or accidentally, into space?

We will need bees for pollination and, if we farm with soil, we will need earthworms.  Some people will not feel happy without animals so perhaps we can expect pet dogs and cats.  Maybe horses or cows or birds, simply because people like them?  How would we transport these animals and how would we house them?

Will there be animals that come along even if we don't want them?  Mice, rats, cockroaches, aphids, vine weevils?  Human parasites like fleas or lice?  Will we be able to prevent the animals we don't like from hitching a ride?

Come to GeekSpeak and talk about which of our companion species will join us when we move out into the galaxy

GeekSpeak - The World Economy, Love it or Hate it? And how do we change it? April 16th 12pm SLT

Is the world finally waking up to the notion that the food we eat, the politicians we vote for, the news we see and the wars we fight have all been bought and paid for by a bunch of kleptocrats, that we live in a kleptocracy disguised as capitalism?

Is the system we live in basically destroying humanity?  And if so, how do we get out of this mess?

This week in GeekSpeak SL we will discuss how the world economy really works and how, or whether, it can be changed.
Will we be reading new 'Panama papers' in 10 years time or will this system collapse?  If it does collapse will we have a worldwide disaster or a better model for world finance?  Come and discuss the future of your wealth and your well-being.

GeekSpeak SL - should we give people the unlimited right to change their bodies? Saturday April 9th 12pm SLT

Should we be able to genetically enhance ourselves or our children?  Should we be able to add technology to our bodies?  Is it OK to have surgery that gives us the sight of eagles or makes it possible to fly?

Should we be allowed to change our species altogether?  What about people who want to be wolves or cats?  Or beetles?

The desire to improve or change the human species has caused a lot of misery in the past.  But we are now entering an era where it may be unstoppable.  Will we be wise enough to solve the ethical problems involved?  Will we know where to draw the line?

Come to GeekSpeak and tell us what your descendants will look like in two hundred years

GeekSpeak SL - If you could design bacteria what would you make? Join the Discussion April 2nd at 12pm SLT

Last week scientists managed to make bacteria with a 'minimal genome', only 473 genes.

If we can now design bacteria what options would you add to the minimal genome?  What do you think bacteria should be doing?

Do you think the first organisms were like these minimal bacteria?  Would they have been even simpler?  Where did the first forms of life come from?  Why do we not see several different 'trees of life' on Earth?  Why did it apparently only happen once?  Or could there be completely different forms of life hidden somewhere for us to discover?

Come and discuss life as we (don't) know it at GeekSpeak today.

GeekSpeak SL - Why Do We Have Rituals? Saturday 26th March at 12pm SLT

Breaking News: Science has discovered that the turning of the sun is forecast by talking bunnies that lay chocolate eggs.  Happy Easter to everyone!

Why do we have these stories and these rituals?  Why are they sometimes so weird?  They can outlast any religious basis and sometimes continue for hundreds or thousands of years.  Do we need crazy stories and rituals?  Will there ever be a time when we are all completely rational? Should we be?

Come to GeekSpeak and tell us about the strangest rituals you know of.  Tell us about the rituals that matter to you and why?  Put on your Xmas hat and wear your bunny slippers and let's talk about fun stories and ancient rituals. Remember, if you do not live in America, that SL time has gone forward by an hour.

GeekSpeak SL - if you were President of Planet Earth what would you do first? Join the Duscussion Saturday March 12, 2016 12pm SLT

Imagine that you are the ruler of the whole planet and no one can stop you from doing what you want.  What would you do to steer Spaceship Earth?  Would you solve the climate crisis or subsidies the oil companies?  Would you do away with borders?  Or build walls everywhere?  Bring people back to school or let them dumb down?  Outlaw all dangerous and independent thought?  Or make sure that every opinion is heard?  Would you try to make everyone equal or allow everyone to make money if they want to?  Or could you do both?

Maybe you think that there is little a President can do.  After all, you still have to deal with other people.  Perhaps no one (unless they have magic powers) can do all that much.  How powerful can a simple, mortal ruler be?

Come and share your master plan for humanity with us!  Or tell us why nothing much can be changed

I hope to see you at the discussion!

Geek Speak SL: If (or when?) Second Life disappears what will you do? Discussion March 5th at 12pm SLT

Strong communities have formed in SL, people who would never have found each other in RL have become good friends in SL.  Some of us, for various reasons, find meeting people and enjoying life easier in SL than in RL.

What will happen to us as SL residents when Second Life is replaced by Project Sansar or when LL goes bankrupt?  Will you give up living in a virtual world and return to RL?

Or will you move to another virtual world?  Will that feel like moving to another country, or another universe, where all the rules are different? Will SL communities form again in other worlds?  Will you be the same person?  Is it time for a 'universal avatar' so that you can always be the same person in any world?  Should we start preparing now for the end of SL?  How would we prepare?  By making mailing lists?

Come and talk to us about the first great virtual refugee crisis on the internet.

Join host Erik Goff for a discussion on these questions.

Geek Speak is a science and technology discussion platform where residents across the grid can join in on a variety of topics every week!

Your spaceship awaits:
