Stand Off Software : Mysteries Afoot -Seersha Heart Reporting...

Do you watch detective shows on television and imagine yourself solving cases?  Do you feel being a detective would be fun?  If you answered yes to either of these questions, Lutra City is the perfect place for you to visit.  Using a HUD designed by Ilithios Liebknecht of Stand Off Software, you can become a detective in world when you go to Lutra City.  It is a fairly simple process.

Arriving at the landing point for Lutra City, I find myself right next to the French & Horn Detective Agency.  There is a large sign to the left of the door that reads “Detectives Wanted”.  Excited at the prospect, I click on the sign and receive a “New Detective”quest with a HUD.  This quest directs me various places so I may become acquainted with using the HUD.  The HUD stores inventory, analyzes, picks up, and stores items.  At the end of this quest, I have my detective’s license.

There is a bulletin board that has three cases to be solved and a different bulletin board with incidents.  For a small fee, you purchase the folder to one of the three cases then begin your detective work.  Compared to various hunts offered in world, these cases are quite the bargain at 190L.  The cases available are Delinquent Daughter, Silent Slasher and Fractured Fraternity.

Described by the developer Ilithios Liebknecht, each case is different.  Silent Slasher is a whodunit murder mystery where during your investigation you uncover a sinister twist.  In Fractured Fraternity, you infiltrate and take down a gang of organized criminals trying to move into Lutra City.  There are also a couple of free incidents to visit.  Ilithios Liebknecht describes the difference as cases are feature length games that you should not necessarily expect to get through in one sitting. They are more difficult than incidents and have a more complex story.Incidents are pretty short and can most likely be completed in a single sitting.  I asked Ilithios to answer a few more questions for us:

Seersha Heart:  Are you working on more cases?  When might they be available?

IlithiosLiebknecht :I'm not currently working on a case for SL, but I am working on a stand-alone PC game featuring the setting and characters from the games here. Expect that to be released in 2017. There will also certainly be more cases here in SL this year.

Seersha Heart:  Do you make any other products in addition to the detective series?

Ilithios Liebknecht: Not at the moment but I do have plans for other types of games and game-related products that I will bring to SL. Keep on the lookout.

Seersha Heart:  What would you like to tell people about playing the cases?

IlithiosLiebknecht : My intention was to bring full featured adventure games to SL that are not over-simplified for the platform and I think I have largely succeeded. They are not just hunts or a walk in the park type game but are truly challenging. You will have to reason your way through sometimes quite complex puzzles which makes it even more rewarding when you finally crack the case.

It's much easier if you bring a friend or two. or five. Also, you can call out in the group to see if anyone is available to help if you get stuck. Many people have completed the games at this point and many are willing to help.

Seersha Heart:  I was wondering.is there a deep dark secret with the name of the city.  What does Lutra [the name] mean?

Ilithios Liebknecht: Lutra was the region name chosen by LL. It's a genus of otter.

Seersha Heart: *laughs* Otter know that one.  Do you have any other SIMs?

Ilithios Liebknecht: I do.

-- The Adventure Game Nexus showcases the best adventure games and adventure game creators in SL.

-- Stand Office Space is a small office building where people can rent an office in SL.

-- Pickle Pub is a live music venue. Not a lot going on there recently though since the games took off at Lutra.

Seersha Heart: I am interested in the mystery writers and developers in SL.  I recently did an article on the author of the AFK series.  Have you heard of Huckleberry Hax the SL author who writes detective novels that are based in SL?

Ilithios Liebknecht: I have not but sounds like something I should certainly look into. That sounds fun.

Seersha Heart:  Any final thoughts for our new detectives playing the games?

Ilithios Liebknecht: Asking in the group or even asking others walking around in the city who look like they are doing the same game is highly encouraged.  I very highly encourage people to help each other.

Seersha Heart: Thank you for your time Ilithios.  I am currently working on Delinquent Daughter and having a great time.

You might wonder what happens if a player contacts Ilithios while on a case.  He has a firm *I don't give hints* policy.  His words on this no hint policy are : “I don't give hints because I kept getting IMs day and night with hint requests so I had to just enact a strict no hints policy for myself. But that only applies to me. Asking in the group or even asking others walking around in the city who look like they are doing the same game is highly encouraged. So my personal no hints policy isn't to try to force people to not get hints, just not from me :-)”

You must struggle through the game with only your own wits or the help of a friend.  The games are hard enough to be challenging but not so hard as to put someone off.  I found that after one sitting, stepping away from the game for a short time helped my solving perspective.

If you want to experience real adventure games in world, visit the city of Lutra and get your detective’s license.  There are mysteries afoot for you there!

Visit the Virtual Grand Canyon. It has Similarities to the Real Famous Landmark- Nena Dreadlow Reporting

Have you ever wanted to go to the real Grand Canyon but never had the chance? There is a whole sim in second life that offers a virtually real experience.  I visited this landmark and I must say that it does resemble the real life one in more ways than one.

Named an official park in 1919, The Real Life Grand Canyon is located in Arizona and is a steep sided canyon carved by the Colorado river.  This natural formation is 277 miles long and up to 18 miles wide.

The Skywalk at the real location is managed by the Hualapai Tribe. It has a horseshoe shaped steel frame with glass floors and is 70 feet high. You can get a wonderful panoramic view of the canyon from this platform.

I visited the SL skywalk as it would not be something I would not do in real life due to being afraid of heights. The virtual skywalk is also shaped like a horseshoe, made of prim glass and very high up. It was nice observing the landscape from that height without being afraid.

Some of the activities offered in the Real life Grand Canyon are zip lining which takes you across at about  30 mph.  It takes about 20 minutes from start to finish. I thought I would try this in Second Life. It was a fast trip down to the bottom of the canyon. Still fun!

A popular activity at the Real life Grand Canyon is helicopter Tours. There are many options with different types of helicopters. You can take a tour from Las Vegas. I was happy to find a helicopter that I could ride around the sl sim. It was great to be able to look around and see everything from a bird’s eye view.

Another Activity is river rafting! Something I have never done but have always wanted to. At the Grand Canyon you can raft down the Colorado River to Diamond Creek or even Lake Meed. The trips can last from 2 to 5 days in the real world but in the Second Life you can take a quick relaxing trip down the river and not even get wet.

History is a big part of our cultural because it allows us a peek back in time. It  helps us understand the world we live in, how things can change but also remind us of our past and how the world was shaped.   I was glad to see that the SL Grand Canyon made sure to mention some things that happened in the real one.  It is both adventurous and educational.

In June 30 1956 the grand canyon was the site of the deadliest commercial aviation disasters in history. Two planes - A TWA and United Airlines collided above the canyon. Both planes fell into the eastern portion of the canyon near the Colorado River.  The location of the crash has been designated a National Historic Landmark. In Second life, The creators of the virtual Grand Canyon  made sure to include this piece of history.

The Pueblo People were thought to live in the Grand Canyon over 1000 years ago. There are six major tribes; the Havasupai, Zuni, Hopi, Paiute, Navajo and the Hualapai. The Native American Indians are a big part of the history at the canyon. The Havasupai Indian Reservation is opened to the public to visit that part of the canyon. Havasupai means people of the blue-green waters. The replica in Second Life  shows how they would of lived back then.

I love the fact that there are not only a lot of activities to do here. From hiking and taking a plane ride to taking tours or checking out the canyon from an observation deck.  But there are also things that you couldn’t do in RL like flying with your avatar through all the ridges and valleys to dancing under the stars with that special someone. They even have clubs and lots of shopping here.

As you can see there are so many similarities to the Real life Grand Canyon. What makes Second Life so unique it seeing things you would not normally see.

Spotlight on Enchanted Alice: Being Alice in Wonderland- Debby Sharma Reporting...

Photograph Credits: Rex Havoc

UPDATED 1-3-15
Enchanted Alice is currently relocating, when it is settled at its new location we will share the teleport link!

“Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late.” The white rabbit ran past Alice, down into the hole. His pink eyes glistened while holding a watch in his hand. Alice was curious and followed Mr. Rabbit down the hole. Have you ever wondered what would you have done if you were given the same place and the same situation?

Enchanted Alice is a wonderful place with a mad house, a library, a caterpillar lounge, a cavern, a maze, a tea pot, a raining room and a rope swing. Rex and Angel Havoc have created a truly enchanted place with lots of things to do. They say, “Explore a twisted adventure in a new take on Alice! Crawl through the Looking Glass, explore various levels, use our anywhere doors, check out our animations. We are still a little twisted and a little mad but we are always enchanted!”

I had the privilege of interviewing one of the creators, Rex Havoc.

Debby Sharma: Please tell us something about yourself and your life in Second Life.
Rex Havoc: I've been in world in one form or another since 2007. I am a husband, a father, an uncle, a cook and the chief bottle washer here on our parcel. I also dj on certain occasions; I love to build, design and explore. I am not a fan of shopping though; despite what my wife and kids might think.

Photograph Credits: Rex Havoc

Debby Sharma: How did the idea of Enchanted Alice happen? Why an Alice in Wonderland theme among all the fables?

Rex Havoc: It happened by accident. I Dj, my host and wife suggested a theme for the evening, the main idea was 'Your Favorite Fairy Tale'; I asked her to elaborate, the suggestion was Alice in Wonderland. I built a set for that event and well, the rest is history! It grew and blossomed from there. I originally built it for her, she was my Alice and I was the Mad Hatter, we had fun with it, building and tweaking the set, it grew from there. Angel started showing it off to friends and eventually we decided to share it with the masses. Our virtual world had grown. A few parcels later, we have grown into what you see today, an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland combined with The Madness a twisted spin off of American McGee as interpreted by me.

Photograph Credits: Melanie von Prague

Debby Sharma: There are some very unique scenes like the rain room. Have you been shot listing the themes for long time or are they something you always wished for?

Archer Mactavish: There are indeed a few different twists and turns here on our parcel. I haven't followed a storyboard per-say, other than Alice falls down a rabbit hole and then her twisted adventure begins in the library. Here she interacts with various items, reads a book, swings from a chandelier is memorized by a cat chasing a gold fish in a bowl. She crawls through our looking glass into a strange and dark hall. She sees aspects of herself from the days she spent in the asylum (from the Madness Returns). She interacts with the Cheshire cat and again falls further into the depths of Enchanted Alice. There are various rooms here on many different levels, the 'Rain Room' is just one of these areas, it's near the end of Alice's journey. It's her retreat, a place to chill, relax and enjoy the sounds of raindrops falling. On occasion she has been caught dancing to the sounds emanating from our club, 'The Mad House'.

At our entrance there is a sign that reads, 'The most amazing gift you can receive is the gift of Adventures. Enchanted Alice is an adventure. It is meant to be explored; it's a parcel built for fun and it's very detailed. You may have to explore to find though, for instance we have an old crow aptly named Edgar Allen Crow. You can eat cake with the Mad Hatter and his entourage from Happy Days! and so much more. For instance my wife Angel penned the perfect poem on what you will experience here, it reads.

Cheshire cats and rabbits in hats
A mushroom house, a scurrying mouse
Little doors and lopsided floors
Pictures to take and memories to make
The Mad Hatter, awake for hours, just to find the perfect flowers
A March hare, a floating chair
Poses, roses, waterfalls
In her madness, Alice roams the halls
A thought began, all such a long time ago
Zip the line, watch the river flow
A wish here , a dream there, twisted madness everywhere
We're all mad! (or so they say)
Be amazing and have an ENCHANTED DAY

Photograph Credits: Melanie von Prague

Debby Sharma: Since when did you start working on them and what or who were your inspirations?

Rex Havoc: Each build has combined various attributes from Alice in her many different forms, whether it be Alice in Wonderland, American McGee or The Madness Returns. My inspirations have come from within and through many conversations with my wife. I like to refer to these as 'Brain Farts'. Laughs. I take it from there, give it some thought, build a prim and let my mind interact with my surroundings. I create and build. After all it is my twisted interpretation of all things, Alice.
Photograph Credits: Debby Sharma

Debby Sharma: What would we see in the future? Any further projects related to Enchanted Alice?

Rex Havoc: Talking about that 'Rain Room' has given me a few more idea's indeed. Only the Cheshire cat knows for sure what the Mad Hatter is brewing underneath his Hat! (Gawd! what have you done.) Yes indeed the parcel is always changing, whether it be minor or major items. Make sure to join Enchanted Alice and keep abreast of all our happenings, whether it be the songs our Minstrels spin in our club, The Madhouse to the live singers in our Caterpillar Lounge, there is always something happening here for sure! Have an Enchanted Day!

AVIE POLL:Oh, Boy! What an Adventure!- Mikile Vinciolo Reporting…

With spring’s arrival and summer’s soon-to-be debut not too far beyond, outdoor activities are in full swing.

The birds are chirping, the grass is deliciously green, the trees are taking foliage, the sky is become a scene worthy of a painting, and people are coming out of hibernation.

With the scraping away of the snow and severely cold weather, adventure is definitely the smell in the air.

An adventure for me is something that involves the outdoor, mostly. The outdoor voyage can be various in lengths, place and activity, but as long as it is outside, I can be put down for it. I love the smell of the outdoors, when it is not perfused with rancid, putrid smells of....uh!...nevermind.
