The Next Chapter for Steele Live Music - Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) Reporting

I like to Sim-hop…a LOT.

It is perhaps my favorite way to help follow the pulse of life on the Grid.  This past week I visited our old friend, Petra Steele, to see what this iconic Treasure of SecondLife was up to these days

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic)  (JB):  Greetings, Petra.  Thanks for agreeing to meet with me and share a few things you are doing for our SecondLife Community.  You have obviously been very busy since last we spoke.  So, tell me and our readers, what have you been up to lately?

Petra Steele (PS): To be honest, I am afraid I'm not certain of what my answer to that question is.  Or at least one that sounds good.  Seriously though, my time since I closed SLM AGAIN, I have mostly been working on the sim, nothing as major as Karabella, the builder I work with has done the lion's share of work on this sim and it's been minor adjustments.  I have gone to many different live music venues that I'd not been able to visit before and heard some artists who are also new to me. Have done more socializing than usual.  I even dated ( laughs).

JB:  I understand you have totally revamped the way you format your programming.  Care to share with our readers what kind of changes you made?

PS:  I think I can make it work.  First off, there will be no more 26 hours of live music a week.  In the long run, that kind of schedule became taxing, on many levels, but, most importantly, it was taking a toll on my health.  The fact is, since closing, even since last we spoke, I have changed my mind about the format several times.  I have finished working on another venue on the sim.  It is called "The Cave" and is embedded in the sim's mountain.  While we have a whole complex cave system, with several chambers, the one I've turned into a venue is actually a replica of the rl temple in Fort Petra in Jordan – (the one shown in Raiders of the Last Ark).  It's, moody and atmospheric and perfect for solo concerts especially for blues and other genres that work well with more intimate venues.  I had hoped to feature 2-hour solo concerts but I am finding that only a few artists will agree to that length of time.  So the venue will feature those who can and are interested or do so routinely.  Those who have a penchant for dealing with other musicians.  My Steampunk Ballroom will feature multiple artists at a time and I'll produce those......frankly when I'm up to it. The Halloween event is a good example of the kind of event hosted in the ballroom, as was my last event only a month ago entitled "We Are Sick of Dark Times" Live music event and formal..

JB:  Is this yet another “Grand ReOpening?

PS:  Certainly not. I have already “reopened” more times than I care to count.  Haha. I like to say “We are not reopening.  Pretend we never left!”

JB:  So, would you like to highlight the Solo Artists you will be hosting?

PS:  Many of the artists we've worked with since I owned the SL Playboy Mansion sim are still performing for us, Wolfie Moonshadow, Djembe Dragonfire, Agatha Nowles, John Rocky, Hogan Baily and Red Heaven, and more, as well as, new artist such as Kendall Jigsaw.

JB:  So then, Petra.  Specifically, what is different about this time from previous club operations?

PS:  Well, for one thing, I’m doing this all myself this time.  I really have no full-time staff.  I hire hosts and I contract with builders when I need them, but much of the design and building I did myself.  That definitely has its advantages and drawbacks.

JB:  Oh?  Do tell?

PS:  The primary advantage of being on my own is I can do and redo without having to explain my actions to others.  I can rely on myself to be reliable.  If I’m tired or ill, I can stop and not explain or have to discuss too much of my private life with anyone else.

JB:  I guess I can see your point there.  But isn’t it a pain to have to do everything yourself?

PS: Yes, there are definite drawbacks.  I'll name a few.  I work all the time with little left to socialize as I am also here less.  I have multitasked my whole working / professional/parenting life but after a while that becomes mechanical, draining, and boring Also working alone on a sim all the time is kind of lonely and I find myself being more replenished by engaging with my rl..

JB:  So, tell me Petra? Do you have an event coming up?  Your Halloween Ball?  What can guests expect there?

PS: I'm, really excited about it.  We will be making a music video with the participation of all our guests.  There may be a special surprise in there but you won't hear what it is from me.  You’ll just have to come and see..  Following the making of the video, we will have two hours of a serious Rock dual with John Rocky (formerly Erik Kottzen) and Kendall Jigsaw.  Those guys are Titans of Rock and it's sure to be an exciting show.

JB:  So, what happened to your other venues, like the Comedy Club?

PS:  That;’ the downside of doing this alone.  I still have them...and will use them again when I rebuild. But this time I’m opening and running for a while, one venue at a time.

JB:  And by doing this on your own, it means all the funding challenges are yours to bear as well?

PS: Yep.  But you get what you pay for. And I get…ME.  LoL   My club…Just as I want it to be.  But I do want to mention the builder who did much of this with me:  Karabella.Velliz

JB:   Tell me about “The Petra Difference”

PS:  I think I bring something different to the table in the live music scene.  my sims have an elegance about them, intentionally so.  My tastes are refined and I am very detail-oriented which is a plus when your goal is to create realistic environments.  I'm also pretty good at crafting lineups that audiences enjoy but that the artists also feel comfortable and stimulated by.  The lineup is key.  I'm not saying that my sim is best or most attractive or even original.  There are some amazing places people have built and run here so let's just say I like to keep up with the high standards set before me, with just a smidge of Petra.  I guess you could say I’m doing it MY WAY!.

JB:  (Hears Old “Blue Eyes” busting out in song…)

Tell me more about the “Petra Difference”?

PS:  (Smiling)  I don't care to appeal to every taste.  I want people to come because they like my clubs and the atmosphere I can create in a venue.  My sets are almost never empty.  And if you hire the best talent, they won't be.  I'm a bit of a Queen Bee and make no apologies for it.

JB:  Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers, Petra?

PS:  Only to let people know that right now the entire sim has been redone to create a Halloween town.  I love it! Bella did an incredible job.  It is truly spooky and dark and there's a lot there to entertain and stimulate the imagination.

JB:   So, there you have it folks, direct from Petra herself.  But don’t just read about it.  Come experience it for yourself, firsthand.  Grab a Limo and, as they say on The Price is Right….Come On Down!

Be there!  Aloha!

JB

Winner of the 1st Squid Game Tournament in Second Life! Meet ᴇᴍᴀᴢᴀ ʟ. ᴠɪʟʟɪɴ (forgis)

On Saturday, October 23rd at 12 pm SLT, players anxiously waited in the bunk room as guards and VIPs suited up for the first Squid Game in Second Life. As VIPs observed from behind a glass window sipping wine, players started the first game of Red Light Green Light, where the first eliminations took place. Game one wiped out nearly all players except the remaining few that moved on to the next round; The Honeycomb.

Players choose their dalgona candy tin, equipt with a timer they begin clicking away to free their selected shapes. The VIPs and live stream viewers watched on in anticipation.

Next came the tug of war game with four players remaining.  Each side tugged the ropes as the embattled team inched closer to the edge only to pull back in retaliation bringing the other team to the edge. It was an intense round and then two fell to their virtual deaths leaving 2 remaining players.

The Marbles game was intense! Spectators watched on as the two remaining players methodically went back and forth for the win. Winners moved on to the glass bridge where they were timed, The last round ended quickly with Emaza (forgis) giving a final push for the win.

Her grand prize was 7500L, the ability to fly at the next tournament, an invitation to be a VIP, and an exclusive interview with The SL Enquirer.  Emaza shared her excitement and some advice for the next-round players.

Interview with Emaza

SLE: First and foremost, congratulations on being the first winner of Squid Games in Second Life! Can you share with our readers a little bit about yourself like what do you do in Second Life and how did you discover Squid Games?

Emaza: My name is Emaza or Mazi for short. I just started creating on Second Life, so I spend most of my time doing that or with family. I got into squid games the same as everyone else! The Netflix show. When I first saw the sim and that there was going to be a tournament I got excited and decided to enter.

SLE: We were excited to see Squid Game too! So, what were your thoughts at that moment when you realized you won the first-ever Squid Game in SL?

Emaza: Honestly. I was confused because I knocked my opponent out of the platform and then I died. I thought that I had done something wrong but one of the moderators told me they shot me for a faster teleport lol.

SLE: Well that’s one way to do it lol.  I have to say as a VIP it was intense watching each game. Can you share with our readers your thoughts and maybe some tips for the next tournament’s players? Starting with Red light Green Light, nearly all the players were eliminated, what advice would you give?

Emaza: There isn’t really much advice I can give for all of the games honestly, but For red light green light take off all Flexi hairs, physics, and moving components and pay attention to the light !.

SLE: That’s perfect advice! The next game was the Honeycomb, did you have a strategy?

Emaza: I didn’t really have a strategy, I just chose a shape and followed the rules. I will say this much. Your clicks have to be well-timed. Each shape has a different amount of clicks, some have more clicks than the timer itself so the best way to beat it is to calculate how much time you put between each click AND DON'T CLICK TOO FAST!!

SLE: I hope the next players are reading this. Your advice is helpful. I have to say tug of war was very entertaining to watch. You came very close to the edge but you fought back!  Some say there was cheating involved by one of the players letting go of the rope but in the end, you and your teammate reigned supreme! What are your thoughts on that game?

Emaza: There was cheating involved but it had nothing to do with the rope being let go. What happened was the other team started pulling BEFORE The Frontman said go so that’s what they were referring to when they said someone cheated. In the process of me trying to help my teammate get the rope back to our side, I lagged and it threw me off the rope. When I tried to get back on it wouldn’t allow me to and my teammate fell. I let The Frontman know what happened and he said my teammate gave her life for me to continue and allowed me to go on.

SLE: That was very noble of her to do. After those poor players dropped to their demise, you carried on to play the Marbles game. I wasn’t sure what was happening since we can’t see players’ HUDS. Did you have a strategy for that?

Emaza: I didn’t compete in the marble game because there were only 3 of us left by the time we reached the game. I didn’t participate because there were only three of us left so the Frontman told me to sit out.

SLE: That makes sense. I got a little confused. With the bridge game, the rules had to be modified with a timer for two players remaining. The Frontman Jim Kirk did a great job of making it possible for you to make it to the last round with an opponent.  The final game went quickly as it seems you simply walked over and pushed her off the platform. Overall what are your thoughts on Squid Game! In Second Life? Do you have any words of encouragement for the next round of players?

Emaza: I think bringing Squid Game to SL was a brilliant idea and I had fun being a part of the experience! The last thing I expected was to be in the final two and DEFINITELY didn’t expect to win. I would say for the next round of players to stay focused, alert, and play hard.

The tournament was topped off with an afterparty featuring the K-Pop Band BlackPink Tribute. The Squid Game Team, VIPs (sponsors), players, and fans were in attendance. Congratulations again Emaza!

This Year, Falloween Fell On A Weekend... Stacey Cardalines Reporting...

Who doesn't like fall foliage? It's one of the few non-syrup reasons I go to Vermont. Autumn colors are my favorite colors, and I even like the air best in fall. I have turned down pretty good jobs in real life that would move me out of New England, partly because I would greatly miss the change of the seasons. People from Maine or Cape Cod often joke about how the tourists all bail before the best season comes, and fall foliage is a big part of that equation.

I'm easy to please with Autumn. I'll be upfront with you that this applies to SL as well. Looking at leaves while playing a game like SL- where you can do virtually anything that can be animated- may seem dull, but if something brings you enjoyment RL, why not check it out in SL? That is actually a pretty good policy to follow, as long as you keep an open mind for new things, or even things you just may not have thought to check out. That's why the gods gave us the SL Enquirer, we do a lot of the leg work for your imagination.

You lose a few things between RL and SL when leaf-peeping. You don't get the crisp fall winds, the smell of falling leaves, the sounds of leaf blowers, the cooling air... the whole October aspect. Some of this can be offset by leaving the window open in your office when playing SL, at least if you live in Massachusetts. We can't add "three hour drive into the mountain forest," but they have driving sims in SL, so you could just go to a few of those to recreate that part. You can even drink some cider or eat some pumpkin pie as you play SL. I can't do all the thinking for you, but I have done enough to kill this paragraph. I have like seven pictures to frame this story around, and tangents are both a writer's best friend and her worst enemy.

I drag my husband along checking leaves if I can't talk any of my girlfriends into driving to the Berkshires in real life. He goes, and claims to enjoy it, but I think he enjoys it like I enjoy going to things that he likes, such as monster movies or car races. "Yes dear, it's wonderful." He knows I'll at least feed him at some point, so it all works out. On such things are happy marriages built.

I went to Falloween by myself, but I usually work solo if I don't need a model. I do my dirt all by my lonesome, as the song says. I'd recommend that for serious Fall folks. A yapping friend or a disinterested spouse are distractive variables, and I don't care if "distractive" might not be a word. Hardcore leaf peepers know of what I speak, and they know that I speak words of Truth.

The good people at Cherished Melody must be fellow lovers of Autumn because they turned the sim out in full fall foliage regalia this year. The sim is known as Falloween, at least for this month. I went through it this morning, and it is lovely. I'd guess that the sim owners are New Englanders, but you never know. I went to a Plymouth sim once, and the owner turned out to be from friggin' Germany.

They have a path that winds through a fall forest, and there are little surprises along the way. Said surprises include a scary graveyard, a witch house, a castle sort of building, and perhaps a few other things. They also had an Autumn-themed art exhibit with pictures of girls in various orange and black. You could spend a good amount of time just checking that stuff out. The graphic artist was quite talented. In fact, whoever put the sim together is pretty talented his or her bad self. They hit Autumn out of the damned park.

Falloween is not a massive sim, you'd have difficulty getting lost in it. However, it was laid out cleverly, and you can kill some time strolling through it. If you need a temporary chill spot to do some messaging or chat to a friend, this would be good for it. If you own spooky clothing, this would be a good sim to go to and just pretend to be part of the exhibit. I do it now and then, people get spooked if the exhibits start talking to them. I didn't do that here, I was there in a bathing suit- as much as I love Autumn, I tend to let go of Summer with great difficulty. Stacey sometimes goes to her SL Enquirer job straight from the beach, player.

However, the real reason you go to this sim is to stroll around and enjoy the various leaves. You could conceivably do this on SL in July or January, but October is when you should be doing it. I don't know how long they keep this sim up, but there is a season for everything, and you should already be heading to this place. I don't write these articles for exercise. I actually write them for money, but helping out my readers is an added bonus.

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 23rd October at noon SLT: The mysteries of the Inner Earth

Can we send a probe to the inner earth?  We know that there is a vast ocean of lava there but there will be many surprises.  For example, oceans have been found beneath the seabed. At present, the record for drilling into the earth is only 12 km, which is not very deep at all.  What will we find if we go deeper?

Why is Earth’s inner core still fluid, while the core of the moon and the core of Mars have both solidified?  What will happen if all that magma in the earth comes a little closer to the very tiny crust we live on?

Does our moon keep the inner core hot by means of gravitational forces? What would happen if these forces unleashed their power and the ‘ring of fire’ burned?

And what does LUCY have to do with it all?

Bring your temperature protective gear and your friends!

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday at 1pm SLT in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.
