The Lost Gardens of Apollo is an Official Historical Landmark in Second Life(c) - Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

In the beginning of virtual worlds, Second Life quickly became a popular online platform for VR enthusiasts  from all over the world. In Second Life’s infancy, the building tools and options were primitive but the most exciting part about it was free will on a global platform.  By 2005, the community was flourishing. Creators filled the grid with lush foliage, parks, beautiful beaches, role play communities, shops, products, services and venues of every genre. It was a time of exploration and creativity.

Dane Zander was a new resident at this time. While exploring, he realized the adult industry was starting to taint the landscape. He wanted a virtual home away from sex venues that he could call his sanctuary; a place of love.  It inspired him to create a relaxing escape, away from the busy side of SL and based on the story of Apollo and Hyacinth.

Day in and day out he worked tirelessly to bring his vision to life after discovering he could create anything he wanted. It became an obsession. His friends were so impressed they suggested he open it up to the public and that’s when The Lost Gardens of Apollo was born.

For over a decade, explorers and lovers from near and far have visited The Lost Gardens of Apollo, even getting married there.  Today it is a Historical Landmark, reopened by Linden Lab to protect its history.

Interview with LGOA creator Dane Zander

SLE: What was your inspiration for The Gardens of Apollo? I've been here so many times through the years. What a peaceful and beautiful place.

Dane Zander: Apollo and Hyacinth... the story at least inspired the naming some of the places on Apollo. I had a full sim on the mainland. The Tuvan sim, well ... all the land on it. I had that fully built up, but lacked the controls and ban opportunities etc. Anshe Chung was getting big at that time and she had a few of the new, still rare private islands so I asked her. I knew she was hot for my mainland sim and we traded. She got Tuvan, I got "sex palms...whatever island"... a flat, utterly empty sand bank.

SLE: Were you a builder starting out here?

Dane Zander: Just small time. I realized I might be in over my head... it was  completely overwhelming. I then started building, trial and error... once I realized I could make anything exactly how I wanted it to be, it became an obsession. I was online three weeks building and hardly slept at all. It was madness! But very rewarding.

SLE: The Gardens of Apollo is a beautiful place to visit. The details show your hard work and dedication.  I see it as an escape from the busy world of sl and rl.

Dane Zander: Thank you! I believe that love is stronger than any other emotion and I wanted to create a place to enable love and serenity to flourish.

SLE: It is.  If more people allowed that to be their guiding light, the world would be a better place.

Dane Zander: I agree.  At the time, SL was far smaller, less regulated and you often came across porn and whatnot all over. I found that taxing so I thought we needed a place free from that. Somewhere to just explore, meditate, date and dance.

SLE: Did you have a partner to enjoy all this with over the years?  I only ask because every long time lovers in SL have touched these grounds at one point or another.

Dane Zander: I had Sean Hadlee as a Second Life partner - also personal assistant, Senior Estate Manager and my rescue line in all cases. He is German and lives in Berlin. We are still close friends IRL.

SLE: Did you build all this together?

Dane Zander: No, I built this.  He was my very capable assistant and scripter, in all manners of logistics and everything else practical.

SLE: How did you get people to visit LGOP?

Dane Zander: I didn't.  Originally it was simply my own place but friends wanted me to open it to the public so I did and people came - I suppose by word of mouth. I never thought this place could become so popular but somehow people liked it enough to tell their friends and to come back themselves :)

SLE: Rightfully so! Has anyone gotten married here? This is a perfect setting for celebrating love

Dane Zander: I eventually did many marriages, yes. It’s a lot of work setting that up. I still have the whole wedding scenarios in inventory! :)

SLE: What about other events?

Dane Zander: Quite a few - R. R. Martin did readings here and at a number of other sims through Bantam Books before he got all GOT famous. He was kind and generous with his limited time here..

SLE: that’s very cool! With the popularity of The Gardens of Apollo has Linden Labs taken interest in it?

Dane Zander: LL had kept a full backup and reopened the sim as a Historic Sim. Now I am under contract with them and gladly so. The sim simply hadn't reopened without them!

SLE: What does that mean for you?

Dane Zander: It means I supervise the sim,  and it means the sim is open for now. I don't decide for how long, but I will service it for as long as I can, which is for as long as LL decide to keep it open.

SLE:  What a wonderful story of a vision turning into a virtual world historical site. Is there anything you’d like to share with our readers?

Dane Zander: No.  nothing except they are welcome as always - and well... that is it a G-rated region/sim for dating, meeting friends, meditating, dancing and relaxing. Not a place for sex - there is a whole Adult continent for that! ;)

The Legend

The history of Valentine's Day--and the story of its patron saint--is shrouded in mystery. February has long been celebrated as a month of romance and St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition.

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

A Somber Look At The Trace Too

In 2014 she informed us all that she had leukaemia, and had to close the trace to take care of herself.  After several chemo sessions, and occasional waves to us on the SL feeds, she announced that her leukaemia was in remission, and that The Trace was returning!  We were all elated, and could not wait for it too open.

The Trace opened (now called The Trace Too) and we flooded in to see.

We at the spaceport paid the sim's tier up to the 29th of August.

We are going to try to keep the Sim open till September the 1st, so you can come to The Trace and remember.  Sadly after that The Trace Too must close so we can keep the Trace safe in our own memories.

Interview with Cupid 2015- Bringing Love Back to Second Life

In Second Life anything is possible including bumping into holiday mascots running amuck amidst the residents. Every year the SL Enquirer sets out in search of these elusive creatures for an interview and something weird always happens. One thing is for certain, these mascots have a sense of humor only the most twisted of minds could love and none other than Lanai Jarrico is right on the forefront to capture the insanity.

Interview with Cupid 2015

Lanai: Hi Cupid! We meet once again to discuss your upcoming big day. What have you been up to in preparation?

Cupid: Oh it’s the one and only Missss Lanai Jarrico! I was just thinking of you. To what do I owe this honor?

Lanai: Aww Cupid you are a sweetheart, thank you for meeting with me. You know I look forward to this every year. So what’s new? Got anything special planned for Valentine’s Day?

Cupid: Of Course! I just got my arrows sharpened and I’m going to put a new spin on Valentine’s Day.  Every year I notice the volume of bad breakups and drama increase. I thought about what I could do to help these tragic unhappy endings become fairy tales with happy endings.

Lanai: OK…. So what is the solution?

Cupid: I’ve added a special ingredient to my arrow elixir. Spiking drinks at local clubs and bars wasn’t really doing the long-term job.

Lanai: So what might this special ingredient be?

Cupid: It is a combination of bon sens, tension sexuelle, autenticidad and imprudence essence from the tree of knowledge. 

Lanai: so you are saying common sense, sexual tension, authenticity and imprudence are the key to a successful relationship in Second Life?

Cupid: Well yes, think about it. Everyone needs common sense and authenticity would be nice. There are many in Second life who lack these qualities, have split personalities and seem to blur the lines between what is real and what is fantasy. If you ask me, personally I think they need a bitch slap instead of an arrow.  Sexual tension is needed to keep the flame burning and imprudence is needed to kind of balance out the cheating trait. We all know one of the main causes of breakups is virtual infidelity. It stems from time zone differences, boredom and all of the cheap and easy girls and guys that swagger around the grid in search of quick shameless romps.

Lanai: You got a point there Cupid. So, how do you plan on administering this elixir to the majority of the population in Second Life. It seems everyone is in some sort of drama or hooking up these days.

Cupid: I have come up with a master plan that includes your help.

Lanai: My help? Are you sure this is a good idea?

Cupid: Absolutely! When it comes to making connections, you are the one that comes to mind. Not only are you one of the most beautiful avatars on the grid, you conduct yourself with great poise and dignity.

Lanai: Ok cut the shit Cupid. What do you need me to do?

Cupid: I want you to drink the elixir and kiss everyone in Second Life.

Lanai: What!?! I will do no such thing!

Cupid: OK the alternative is I need you to spit in this cup.

Lanai: uhhh

Cupid: The elixir isn’t complete without the final ingredient.

Lanai: Don’t you think that’s kinda gross? Why would my spit play an important role in your master plan?

Cupid: You don’t get it do you? You have a magical ability to connect people.  With your essence in this elixir, the Valentine spell will be powerful.

Lanai: OMG this is so unladylike…. *conjures up the most obscene amount of flem and spits it in Cupid’s wine glass* Sorry. SL is a large community and since I have a noble intention in mind to help the SL community at large I mustered as much as I could.

Cupid: Dang Lanai, I asked for spit not a whole lung! Anyway. Now let me test it on this bunny.

Lanai: Wait! I want no part in animal testing. The Easter Bunny is going to be pissed! It is also cruel and unusual treatment.  Easter is around the corner and we do not want Second Life over-run by half breed Viagra rabbit D/s vampires.

Cupid: Oh please. Half breeds have been part of this virtual world community for quite some time. Why do you think family role play has become so popular? Everyone is starting to look for a new identity a midst the chaos. It is time we take our community back and make it civilized.

Lanai: Let me remind you that you walk around wearing a fig leaf and wings. Perhaps you should have added real life to the Valentine concoction….

Cupic: mmmmmmm Lanai you are too cute. I have another idea.... before you go I want to ask you something.

And they Lived Happily Ever After-The Wedding of Nicholas Courtois and Bubbles Song Debby Sharma Reporting...

The sun was almost setting; it was 3:00 pm. We could see the rays peering through the branches of the trees at the start of the altar. The trees blossomed blue and white flowers with white lights hanging down and transmitting a perfect romantic aura in the environment.  On 26^th of October, 2014, Nicholas Courtois and Bubbles Song wed in the holy matrimony of forever love.

The groom walked down the altar, covered with petals, with the groomsman, Cowboy Swansan. Nicholas stood there waiting at the end of the altar with his eyes sparkling as he looked down thinking about the last few moments of his bachelor life ended. Then the flower girl, Sara, followed by Ivy, the bridesmaid with Blackheart, Best man and son of the couple, entered and walked towards the altar. The groom looked up with the smile and thinking all the dreams he had dreamt with his love. Becks and Bubbles held hands while climbing up the steps to walk to the end of altar. Every one smiled at the beautiful bride. The groom, Nicholas looked determined and convinced that she is the only one who could complete him in every way.

The beautiful white wedding gown sewed with soft silk and ribbons were custom made by “Junbug”. Bubbles says, “It was a weird story actually. Ever since I was a little girl, I've always said that when I get married I want Sarah's ball gown from the movie The Labyrinth. I couldn't find a mesh version in SL so I settled for a beautiful dress made by my friend Tori. When I was out shopping for bridesmaid dresses, I stumbled across this one, which is almost an exact replica of my dream dress, so I had to have it. Thank you so much Tori.”

The preacher, Vasanti Romano, started the wedding ceremony by saying, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join together Nicholas Courtois and Bubbles Song in the hands of marriage.” After a moment of silence, she asked Becks Jarman, bride’s best friend to give her away to Nicholas Courtois. The preacher asked both Bubbles and Nicholas if they wanted to take each other to be their wedded husband and wife respectively. Would they love, honour, comfort, and cherish each other from that day forward, forsaking all others, keeping only unto each other for as long as you both shall live. Bubbles replied “I do” with commitment and love in her eyes. The couple looked at each other sharing a smile with sparkle in their eyes. Nicholas replied without any hesitation, “I do.”

When it was time to exchange their vows, Nicholas chuckled saying, “Course it's me first..." while searching his pockets, he said, “I wanted to cheat and take the words I had written for you in my picks and recycle them, not because I waited 'til today to write my vows, but because they capture how I feel for you and how I've felt for you since the day we met.” Bubbles smiled as she looked at her organised man. He continued, “On that day I was looking for a DJ to hire instead I found you, a friend, my girl, my angel...my songbird. Granted, I never spoke to you much after that day and did all I could to avoid you but the moment I needed you - you appeared. You made me laugh and gave me no down time to wallow in shit. And since that day you've been caring for me, loving me and, let's face it, you've had moments you've been "dealing" with me. For a while there I was scattered and struggling and ready to book but you, with all your patience and sweetness made it your mission to help me see how lucky I am. If anyone doubts it I'll confirm to them right now that you are the most amazing woman. You showed up right when I needed you. You replaced bullshit with sanity, conflict with calm and doubt with your own brand of goofy optimism - all the while dancing around me, sticking flowers in my hair as I scowl and try not to laugh...A songbird...a siren who has sung me into a fog of something new and strange. Those were my feelings then and they're my feelings now, but here on out I get to love you as my wife.”

With tears rolling down, Bubbles wiped her cheeks saying, “I know these are probably longer than your average wedding vows, so please forgive me. But there is a lot I wanted to say to this amazing man, and you all know me well enough to know I talk too much.” With a quick laugh, taking his hand and looking up into his eyes, she spoke softly, “Nick, The very moment you came into my life, is the moment my world was turned upside down. I've never felt so inexplicably drawn to someone from the second they said "Hello". Although I had to bury it away and hide it, I always shone a little bit brighter when you were around. It was a long time coming before we found our way to one another, but when we did, it happened exactly when the time was right for both of us. You have made me feel more deeply than I thought I could, and made me happier every single day than I ever thought I would be. It hasn't been an easy road for us, but I truly believe it has been worth it. We have been brought closer and made stronger and what we have now is exactly what it should be. There is nothing we cannot face if we stand together. You make my heart smile and you are more of amazement to me, each day I rediscover you. I fall in love with you again and again with each kiss and I'm the luckiest girl alive that you chose me to be your wife. And on this day and every day onward, I promise myself to you totally and completely. I promise to trust you, encourage you and respect you. To cherish your love and never take you for granted. I promise to always be honest and open with you. To earn your love every day and always be the girl you deserve. My heart and soul are already yours but I promise to let you keep them, as long as you keep them safe and I promise to do the same with yours in return. I promise to have the patience that love demands, to speak when words are needed and to share in the silence when they are not and to never let us lose our spark. I promise to always argue with you.” She looked up saying, “I told you I'd get that in there!” smiling again she continued, “I promise to always be your good luck charm and cheerleader for every Broncos game. But most of all, I promise to love you unconditionally and without hesitation. Loving what I know of you and trusting what I don’t yet know, I give you my hand. I give you my love. I give you myself. These are my vows, and I make them to you with a soul full of love and a heart full of you. With every beat of my heart, I love you.”

The rings were exchanged. Nicholas placed the ring on Bubbles's finger followed by Bubbles. They took an oath, “With this ring I thee wed. I wear it as a symbol of our love and commitment.” With this Vasanti Romano ends with her final words, “I pronounce that they are husband and wife. You may now seal the promises you have made with each other with a kiss. Nicholas, you may kiss your bride!”

After the wedding and the photo session, the couple went to the reception area, which was a wedding gift from the groomsman, Cowboy. Family and friends raised a toast for the newly wed couple.

Blackheart Taurus, the couple’s son said, “All I can say is I wish you and Nick all the happiness that two special people can have as they both deserve it. One promise I make to you is that I will not let you down in anyway. Congrats and much happiness to mom and dad.”

Becks Jarman, best friend of the Bride said, “Hello! For those of you who may not know me, I'm Becks! I'd sincerely like to thank everyone who could be with us today to celebrate this wonderful day. I have known Bubbles since my very first weeks on Second Life and from the first conversation with her I knew we were sister souls and I came to love her more than I can say! She showed me how much fun there is to be had here and has since been my best friend, my sister, my roommate, and still one of absolute favorite people in and out of second life! And just like Bubbles and i became fast friends, Bubbles knew Nick was the man for her the moment she met him. He was definitely her knight in shining sunglasses! I've never seen her glowing and so happy as I have when she's around this guy and I love him for it! I truly believe these two have something strong and special and I couldn't be happier for you both! I can't thank you both enough for letting me be such a big part of your special day. I'm so honoured and happy I could be here today. I know it's been a bumpy road planning this day, some keyboard malfunctions and crashes.  but we accomplished it like a boss!”

Ivy (Cottonhand) said, “The groom is my brother. I can say that Trinity is a special gift for him. I have known Nick for over a year. We met at a Rock Club. He supported me till that time and I tried to be there for him. When he told me about Bubbles, I could understand that she is very special girl and when I met her, she found a permanent place in my heart. I wish both of them a happy life. I feel so honoured to be her bridesmaid.”

Jeanette Contepomi says, “He proposed to her at my park during her show. I have those pictures too. My daughter is their flower girl too.

Deligaff says to Bubbles, “I am so happy you have found your soul mate, I wish you and him many years of happiness.”

Delores Beaumont says, “Bubbles is what her name implies, a very bubbly personality, Nick seems to be equally as fun to be around, I think they have found the perfect partnership and wish them a very long and happy marriage together. Good luck to you both and thank you for inviting me to be a part of your special day.”

Daydream said, “Nick and Bubbles, you are the perfect SL couple.  I wish for you happiness and joy for as long as it is possible here on SL.  Love you both.”

McDerix and Mariza said, “I've known Bubbles for a long time, some would say too long! But we had a date every Thursday at the Rockin Blues Cellar and she became

great friends with all of us!  We'd like to wish Bubbles and Nick a long and happy one and a great marriage too. We love you guys.”

KiikiiDoll and Jayson said, “Congratulations to Bubbles and Nick. Sorry we were not able to make the wedding :( Jayson and I wish you and Nick all the best!”

Mrs. and Mr. Courtois thanked Cowboy who graciously allowed them the venue to celebrate. Nichlas laughingly said, “CB who is like my brother, since I met the guy he's had no problem giving shit to me straight and threatening to kick me at every turn. Thanks for the support, brother. Then there's Black, my son, he thinks he's better looking than me but I think it's evident who's the good looking one in this family, his mother.” He continued, “I also want to thank Becks who has been there when I might have messed things up with the girl who is now my wife.
