The Assassination of Ozymandius King - Dean Lawson Reporting

An in depth interview with Second Life Artist Ozymandius King

A photojournalist for the SL Newser, Ozymandius was also a featured artist at the Horus Art Gallery, the Sisse Singhs Art gallery and was an integral member of the MAGE Magazine creative team when he was shot down in front of his exhibition at the Windlight Art Gallery. Of course this is just Second Life role play, but the incident was inspired by Facebook’s ruling to delete the account of Ozymandius King who, a month after joining Facebook, had gained over 3,000 Facebook friends and developed a following of over 5,000 members for the MAGE Magazine Facebook group.

It should be noted that, although there are several thousands of Facebook users using Second Life identities, Facebook has a policy that compels their subscribers to use their actual identity. While Facebook claims this is done for security reasons, people all over the world have protested this policy and continue to create Facebook accounts under false names.

“My online name is like a brand name.” Ozymandius stated in an interview with Ian Thomson. "Should The Walt Disney Company be forced to change their name now that Walter Disney is no longer the CEO?”      http://0zymandius.wix.com/magemagazine#!September-18-The-Day-F-Book-killed-the-King-Part-2/c112t/56042a170cf25fa7fe161315

"Many people use fake names on Facebook for safety reasons,” drag queen Sister Roma -- a member of activist group Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence — said in an interview with CNN. "Victims of stalking and relationship abuse have a right to participate in social media anonymously,”      http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/16/living/facebook-name-policy/

Despite these protests Facebook continues to delete the accounts of people who are unable to provide evidence that the name they use on their account is in fact their real name. Oddly enough, thousands of Facebook users continue to use stage names and Second Life identities as enforcing this policy would be too difficult and potentially detrimental to Facebook's bank book, as the company's net profit relies on its ability to provide an audience for companies that advertise with them. So, with Facebook turning a blind eye to the vast majority of their subscribers who use false names, why was Ozymandius King singled out?

Dean : Do you believe that you were targeted by Facebook? If so, why?

Ozymandius : I joined Facebook with the sole intention of publicizing MAGE Magazine. Facebook warned me against sending friend requests to people I didn’t know but then offered to promote my website to strangers if I paid them 20 dollars U.S. per day to get an estimated 14 - 50 extra likes ... This is a ridiculous hypocrisy so I ignored Facebook’s warning and sent out friend requests to people who I did not know. Over the course of the next month, more than 3,000 people accepted. One month after establishing the MAGE Magazine Group page we reached over 5,000 members and more than 500 likes and I didn’t pay a single red cent for any of this. This is not to be cheap, I appreciate Facebook has created this social networking website but MAGE Magazine simply doesn’t have the advertising budget to compete with Marvel Comics or the Disney Corporation so we need to grow our audience one Facebook friend at a time. If Facebook chooses to serve the corporations by limiting our freedom of speech, our right to be heard, then I hope this article reaches a billion friends and inspires them to demand a more democratic social networking system.

Dean : On September 11 you made a declaration on the MAGE Magazine Facebook Profile page that “Facebook is going to murder me”, don’t you think that’s a bit extreme?   https://www.facebook.com/MAGEMagazine?skip_nax_wizard=true&ref_type=page_profile

Ozymandius : Yes, but this is a marketing campaign so the goal is to get people’s attention. I would like to state at this point that, when I was a journalist with the SL Newser, I conducted myself with the utmost integrity, but Second Life news, more often than not, is simply another form of advertising, as a journalist for the SL Enquirer I’m sure this is something you can relate to.

Dean : Err…. Getting back to your alleged assassination, you parleyed this incident with Facebook into a story line for MAGE Magazine. Could you elaborate on this?

Ozymandius : Figuratively it was like I was being murdered by Facebook because they were terminating my account, in essence, they were preventing me from reaching a rapidly growing audience. The creative team at MAGE Magazine decided to depict this as an actual assassination in which 0THELLA, the Editor of MAGE Magazine, becomes a prime suspect because, when ALDO the Private Investigator deduces, she was jealous of my success. The reason for choosing the Windlight Art gallery as the scene of my murder was because, at the time, I had a fellowship exhibition with Windlight and we wanted to portray an artist being shot down just as he was starting to receive recognition for his work.

Dean : Is your relationship with MAGE Magazine over, now that your Ozymandius character has been killed off?

Ozymandius : Othella’s familiarity with soap opera plots proved to be invaluable in writing my character back from the dead but I don’t want to spoil the ending for your readers and would like to invite them to join the MAGE Magazine group to get their free subscription to our monthly magazine.

Dean : Is there anything else you would like our reader’s to know about you?

Ozymandius : I’m just a guy that likes to laugh and has a lot of fun being creative. Working with the artists at MAGE Magazine allows me to do both and I hope articles like these encourage others to join in the fun.

Spotlight Feature: Meet Jeffah; Winner of SL’s Got Talent 2015- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

After competing against 17 of SL’s top performers, the judges have spoken!

Meet Jeffah (Jeffah24 Resident); winner of SL’s Got Talent 2015. Jeffah aka  Jeff Blake is a composer and singer from Ontario Canada. In Second Life he is in high demand and performs at various venues across the grid. His broad genre includes Swing, Jazz, Broadway, pop, country, and rock. The SL Enquirer caught up with Jeffah to learn more about him and his inspiration for Music.

Interview with Jeffah

What does Music mean to you?

Jeffah:  Music is my life. Every moment of every day there is music in my head. Even when I'm not thinking about music, it is helping me do everything I do. Music is the reason I exist.

What inspired you to become a singer?
Jeffah:  It was the one thing I wasn't doing with music, and one day I just decided that I needed to develop my voice. That happened in the privacy of my bedroom, and no-one knew about it until I entered a singing competition when I was 17... and the rest is history!

What genres do you cover?
Jeffah:  In my SL shows, I sing Rock, Pop, Jazz/Swing, Country, Folk, Broadway, Disney... I like to tell everyone at my shows to consider me a human jukebox – press my buttons and pick a song, because there is something for everyone!

Do you write your own music? If so, what do you like to write about?
Jeffah:  All that I write is instrumental – I have never been a good lyricist. In fact, until I started singing, I very rarely paid much attention to the words in a song! I have written melodies for lyrics written by others, though.  Writing complex changes and mood-altering harmonies comes as a second nature to me. Would someone like to teach me how to write lyrics? :)

How did you discover Second Life?
Jeffah:  A friend on another virtual-world type of 3D chat platform told me about Second Life, so I popped over to make an account and check it out. A few months went by without much time spent on it, until one day I was roaming around and encountered someone who had a “Singer” tag over their head. I sent them a message asking about singing in SL... and we have been dating ever since! <3

You perform in a band in real life. Can you tell me more about your rl music background and what you have done before discovering the Second Life Music Industry?
Jeffah:  When I was very young, I was in a Yamaha Canada Music competition that went to a national level, and I ended up winning the championship. From that day, I was their “prodigy child”. I traveled all over the world performing in concerts from small showcases, to world-wide competitions in venues such as the World Trade Center in Singapore. I attended Wilfrid Laurier University for music performance and orchestration, and have played in many ensembles and touring bands, from R&B to Jazz, choral to orchestral, and most recently with the Canadian Fiddle Rock band “Fiddlestix”.

Aside from having a live audience, what similarities and differences do you feel when you are performing on a virtual stage as opposed to a real one?
Jeffah:  I can honestly say it is such a treat to be able to perform from home, in the comfort of my living room! However, there is no greater experience for a performer than stepping out on a real stage to thousands of adoring fans. I would say that I get a similar energy from my audiences no matter if they are at RL shows or SL shows – the audience's response and feedback during a show is what feeds me energy when I am performing.

Has Second Life helped your RL Music career?
Jeffah:  In a way, yes. Being able to sing more often, and for longer periods of time has been a direct result of performing regularly in SL.

Can you describe the feeling when you are performing for an audience? Do you get nervous?
Jeffah:  I used to get SO nervous all the time! However, after many shows around the world in various countries and different languages, you find that there is always one thing in common – music brings everyone together. After my first show, alone on stage in front of 10,000 people... very few scenarios find me nervous these days. It really depends on the situation. I was nervous during the SLGT final round! Most of the time, however, if you are confident that you can put on a good show, the nerves fade away. :)

What was it like when you were announced as the Winner of SL’s Got Talent 2015?
Jeffah:  I was alone at home, so I would need to ask my neighbours if they heard me! Haha! My entire purpose of entering this year was to see if I could be heard by some people who had never heard me before. Winning was the icing on the cake, and I'm truly grateful for the opportunity.

Have you received other rewards and recognition in SL and in RL?
Jeffah:  This is the first for me in SL. In RL, I would need several pages to list them all. To me, life is a journey, and everything that happens to you along the way is a part of that journey. If you like who I am today, then I invite you to thank all that has happened to me in my past... for my past is what made me who I am today. Awards or not, the future is now. Make it a good one!

The Music Industry in Second Life is saturated with performers and DJs making it highly competitive. What do you think separates you from the rest?
Jeffah:  My shows are always tailored to the venue/audience for which I am performing. It is my goal to give the listener an experience where they could close their eyes and feel as if they were at a RL show. I take great pride in every note that you hear at one of my shows, truly – I hear things that most others do not, but I still hear them... and if it isn't perfect, it's not used. You can be certain that you will not hear anything less than the best I can give you, each and every time I perform.

From a performer's perspective,  how do you feel about the Music Industry in Second Life? There have been debates about pay scale, varying talent and venue costs, Could there be some improvements in how things are run?
Jeffah:  There are venues for every performer, from those just starting out to those who have climbed the proverbial ladder. Aside from the biggest names in music, performer fees in RL barely cover expenses. The fees most seasoned performers in SL charge are magnitudes lower than basic expenses to put on that show. If we are performing in SL, it is because we love to do it and hope that you will enjoy the show. The most important thing for audiences to consider is how much they would spend on a night out of the house, doing something similar to what they are doing in SL. If you were at a bar, for example, you would be buying drinks. If you were at an outdoor festival, you would likely be buying food and/or concert merchandise. In SL, if you can afford a few Lindens here and there, please tip the venues! Without venues, we have no place to perform.

What advice would you give new artists interested in performing in Second Life?

Jeffah:  Best advice I could possibly give anyone interested in starting out performing in SL would be to talk to other performers. They are the best source of information you could possibly have in terms of where to start and how to succeed.

How can venues book you?
Venues interested in booking me can contact me directly in-world, or through my Facebook fan page.

How can readers follow your shows and sample your music?
Jeffah:  I have an in-world fan group named “Jeffah's Jivers”, a subscriber service for those who don't have group space, and a Facebook fan page where I post my show details. I also have a SoundCloud profile where I have some recordings that I have made over the past few years, and I just recently hit 1 MILLION plays! That's a lot of people who have listened to my singing!

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Jeffah:  Find a dream. Set goals that will bring you closer to that dream. Never give up. Be yourself. Live life, don't just watch it pass by.

Thank you for taking the time to meet with The SL Enquirer and  Congratulations on Winning 1st Place in SL’s Got Talent 2015!

PLACES FOR HIGH QUALITY HAIR IN SL- Camury Reporting...

What is the ideal hair for you? What is your hairstyle? Do you prefer a basic or a sophisticated style?

In Second Life you can find a huge variety of hair types, mesh or flexi  mesh hair, for those who enjoy some movement.

* The Truth * Store is one of many traditional hair shops in SL. Inside it, you can find a huge variety of hair styles, for 250 L. The shop also features a room with a great variety of hair for 50 Lindens for each color package.

There are long, short, curly hairdos with different colors to suit all tastes and styles.

The *Agrace* store is a very fashionable brand in the virtual world of Second Life. In the store, you will find high quality and beautiful hair caps (I love the cowboy hat at Argrace). The price of the color pack is 250 lindens. The store also offers, as a group gift, a beautiful short hair, for him and her (the group is free to join).

Some girls in SL are innovative in wearing short hair. Famous muses of real life, as Sophie Charlotte, Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence, for example, also inspire the fashion trend, for some girls in SL with their short hair called * pixie cut * and * Bob * (at the high of the ears).

The Dura shop produces original hair in SL. At this shop, you will find beautiful unisex hair. You can also choose your favorite color, paying 100-130 lindens.

However, most of the SL girls prefer longer length, * Rapunzel * style hairdos. Medium and long hair, with a beautiful diagonal fringe, (hello, Kim Kardashian), are the most desirable.

The * Catwa * Store has the most beautiful and unique hairstyles. In their hair pack, you will find two different sizes according to your breast size as well as the color changing HUD. You don’t need to a sandbox, simply left click it, and it goes to your inventory. Prices start at 250 lindens.

The Exile Store has high quality hair which range in up to 90 different colors to fit most avatars – whether they’re a mermaid, a fashionista, an elf or whatever your imagination desires. The color pack price is 280 lindens.

And if you're already thinking about the future, we anticipate the trends of hair styles for 2016.

Depending on the hairstylists in RL, variations of short haircuts, *bob hair* style  with at chin-length, are leading by far among the favorites for next year.

Check out the hair trends for 2016:
Long hair: they remain in line with the breasts and have a fringe at chin with a gently undulating texture. The very basic avatars must avoid not having their flat silhouette.
Medium size: The length should be four fingers above the bust. This style is not suitable for avatars with short necks or round faces. Another option is investing the classic channel, at the height of the neck, and is ideal for avatars with thin and delicate faces.
Short hair: style "pixie cut" with an irregular fringe, layered and falling over his forehead defines short hair for 2016. For short hair, one should lengthen the silhouette of short or chubby avatars.

If you do not have many lindens to buy a hair, go for to group gifts. The Shop “Entwined” offers as a group gift of beautiful hair for the girls (the group is free to join). Choose your hairstyle and have fun!

Tattooing – where fashion meets art - Lacy Muircastle reporting

There is a school of thought that tattoos — much like graffiti, which in the past decade has been transformed from cult to collectible — are increasingly being embraced by the art world, particularly in areas where art and fashion meet.

Chances are that you, a family member or a friend has tattoos. Once associated with sailors, gang members, or circus performers, these markings are now a mainstream cultural force.
This school of thought believed that not only is this an art, it is one of humanity's most ancient arts... The European "discovery" of tattooing dates from Captain Cook's exploration of the Pacific in the 18th century. Cook took artists and scientists on his voyages, and on the islands in the Pacific they encountered peoples for whom it was habitual and ritualistically important to decorate the body using a bone needle to force natural dye deep into the skin.

Modern tattooing, which these days is practiced by parlours offering state-of-the-art markings, is just a more hygienic (hopefully) and technological version of this ancient method. Tattooing flourished in the inhabited Pacific islands, yet each practised a different style: Maoris combined tattooing with facial scarification, Marquesas islanders wore full-body tattoos, and Samoans preferred them on buttocks and thighs. The word for this art was "tatau".

For the first European visitors, these islands, above all Tahiti, seemed paradisiacal dreamlands of free love and unashamed physical beauty. In 1789 the crew of the Royal Navy ship HMS Bounty, seduced by the alternative society they saw among the islanders of the South Seas, mutinied against the formidable Captain Bligh. As an expression of their radical choice to stay in the Pacific and reject their Britishness, they got tattoos. Since then, tattooing has become a nautical stereotype, then the stuff of 1950s fairground subculture, and now a mainstream body art celebrated in picture books and conventions.

In the Pacific, anthropologists have associated tattoos with a fragmented conception of identity, a belief that a person is not one but many things. Putting on the shining painted skin of a warrior changes your nature.

Are people now seeking to change their natures, to become fabulous new beings? Perhaps there is something digital and post-human about it all, a new sense of self that is no longer bounded by being inside your own skin, but penetrated – as by a needle – by social media and constant internet information, so you feel part of a larger entity, that imprints itself on your body.
Which brings me to Second Life.  Tattoos are probably even more prevalent in SL than in RL (I wonder if that’s because it’s somewhat less painful…) and because of the very nature of our virtual world it can definitely be classified as art.  Even though it sits somewhat uncomfortably on the edge of the fashion world.

I bumped into Khurt Vhargon recently.  He of V3 Tattoo among other things.  Wow, he’s one sizzling hot avatar.  Oh wait I digress *cheesy grin*.  So I asked him how he got into creating tattoos for the SL market.

He said “It was some time back now. I wandered into a tattoo store and I saw a pic of a guy, typical vendor shot and I thought f@#k! That dudes got this whole SL thing figured out, his avi looks TONS better than mine.  I gotta get to where I look like that.  So seems like since that day a tattoo has been in my mind as a part of what a "good" avi needs to have.  Then I started looking for tattoos that have some kind of meaning. I mean this was back in the day of Addiction and all those guys they were all full body tribal things yada yada, they looked cool but what did they mean?  It’s not like those dudes all belonged to the same tribe.  Anyways my first tattoos, I cringe looking at them now but they all had a "message" for the most part.  I mean I used some tribal stuff, it was pretty limited back then and you have to play to the market but they all had some message in them. I used a LOT of Latin.”

And so began the career of a SL tattoo artist.

Fashion is all about self-expression; what you wear can say a lot about who you are and who you want to be. So it's only natural that the fashion-obsessed seem to have a thing for tattoos, too. Getting inked is a way to share your passions, and if style is one of them, there is no cooler way to represent what you love.

Like fashion, tattoos come in all shapes and sizes – and everyone's ink is beautiful in its own unique way. Have a look at some of these tattoos and you may just convince yourself that it is time to get some new ink.
