WHITE HARBOR GACHA: TAKING THE GUESSWORK OUT OF THE GACHA – JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC), REPORTING

One of the Joys of life in the Grid, and especially as a reporter covering  life on the grid, is that I get to travel around and learn about some of the real gems of SecondLife, often tucked away in the most unlikely of locations. It was on just such a day that I found myself in the quaint little village of White Harbor.  The fresh air blowing in from the ocean, the scent of sea heavy in the breeze. Sea Gulls circling about, with their distinctive chatter, and the familiar sounds of wind-whipped halyards, slapping against main masts on dozens of sails boats and watercraft. It was here that I first met Silken Sydney, owner, and curator of White Harbor Gacha, puttering about in her shop, and I was instantly captivated by her story.  She was busily preparing for the arrival of the Ferry, due any minute from City by The Bay, carrying tourists who would descend on the Gacha shops and paw over the treasures there. Sydney graciously agreed to chat with me about her operation, as long as I agreed to help with the dusting.  She handed me a dust rag without further comment on the matter and pointed me toward a shelf of already sparkling Gachas

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) (JB):  So tell me, Sydney. What is a Gacha, anyway?

Silken Sydney (SS): A Gacha is a Collection of items or an item from a collection that is randomly attained by a game of chance.  In other words, you pay per pull on a machine, much like slots, and get an item from a grouping.  No guarantees what it will be.  You pay to play to get what you want. Items range from common, to uncommon, rare, and Ultra Rare.  Each is harder to get based on its ranking.

JB: So, where are the Gacha machines?  Where do I pay my money and take my chances?  Isn’t there usually a bank of these “slot machines” somewhere?

SS: Ahhh...you see, Josh.  That is what makes White Harbor Gacha different.  We take the element of chance out of the purchase.  We have already paid for the “random pulls”.  We have taken the chance out of the game for you, by paying for the random pulls and throw-away prizes.  When we win the good prizes, we display them here and resell them to the customer at a fraction of what they would pay for the same item retail.

JB: I have seen Gachas advertised in various locations on the grid. Just what is different about your Gacha place from the others out there?

SS: White Harbor is restricted to 9 Shops ONLY.  This helps reduce lag and Vendors are voted in should an opening become available.  We give our shopkeepers their store.  There is no rent and they get 1000 prim to work with.  With no overhead, they stand to make a clear profit but they are also solely responsible for the traffic to their stores.  While I advertise for everyone naturally, they are expected to go above and beyond.  Quality and exclusivity is the goal.

JB: This sounds expensive.  How do you fund the operation?

SS: White Harbor functions on donations only.  Often the tier is not met but we cover the cost personally.

JB: So then,  where, and how, are your operators expected to advertise?

SS: In order to maintain their status of a storekeeper at the Harbor, each is expected to advertise 4 times a week as well as maintain a cohesiveness to the environment.  There are Gacha groups that they can join and advertise.

JB: Do you do this all by yourself, or do you have business partners?

SS:  Yes and no.  The Land is owned by Benton Torkelsonn who has allowed me to have The Harbor built in order to house the Co-Op Gacha Guild, established just for the Harbor.  The Co-Op consists of 9 people who all get a vote and get input on what they would like to see happen or changes that may come up.  In doing that, I guess you can say they are business partners.

JB: I understand your operators have to sign a covenant?   How is your covenant different?

SS: We are offering more than just a place to rent.  This is a community and its very specific on the level of quality we wish to maintain.  It’s very clear on the expectations, violations and end results.  Everyone is asked to read this before accepting a Shop here.

JB: How many shop owners can you work with?

SS: There are a total of nine shop owners, including myself.  That is the maximum capacity for the Harbor.

JB: Can you share with us some of the more unusual Gacha items for sale at White Harbor?

SS: You will find many quality items at the Harbor.  Listing them isn't possible due to the fluctuation of availability. They can be there one day and gone the next.  I encourage everyone to speak to the shopkeepers if they are looking for anything specific.  Many of us have a surplus not even in the stores yet.

JB: I saw a sign on my way here advertising something called a “TGE”?    What is this “TGE Gacha Resell Event” that read about?

SS: Tempting Gacha Event is for resellers.  This is done every 3 months along the pier adjacent to the Harbor.  24 spaces only are allowed and it runs for a full month!  You can come by sea, air, or teleport in.  Vendors from all over including some of our shop keepers bring their best items and offer great deals.

JB: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

SS: White Harbor and the TGE Event are simply things to experience. It's not just a bunch of stores.  It's an actual sail-able Harbor with other scenic features.  The Stores are amazing and they are surrounded by an interactive environment.  You just have to come and see for yourselves.

So there you have it, folks. If you have an eye for the unusual, the eclectic, the curiosity, or that perfect item to add to your collection of other items, scoot on down to White Harbor and look through their collection of one-of-a-kind treasures.  Hurry now!  Once these precious finds are gone, they’re gone.

Spotlight on LUXE PARIS LOOK OF THE YEAR 2021 Winner Valsnia

The Annual LUXE Paris LOOK OF THE YEAR Competition is a fabulous event with some of the most beautiful models from across the grid competing for the crown and title of Ambassador of the LUXE Paris brand. It was a very tough competition. Each contestant goes through rounds with weekly themed photographs viewed by a panel of judges.

Hailing from India, Valsnia found her way into Second Life attracted by Machinima and realized Second Life was much more than a game, but an extension of herself. Valsnia is confident, beautiful, and poised with a passion is for fashion. She will be an excellent 2021 ambassador for this very prestigious brand. Meet Valsnia, LUXE Paris LOTY 2021 winner!

Interview with Valsnia

SLE: We love that SL is a global community because we get to meet people from all over the world. Where are you from and how did you discover Second Life?

Valsnia: First of all, thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed by your amazing establishment. It's truly an honor. You are not understating when you told SL is a global community. I think at this point I know at least one person from every country and that would not have been possible without SL.

I am from India and the story of how I discovered SL is somewhat funny. So, I was watching Pixar shorts on Youtube (I was around 18 that time) and the auto-play was on. So the next video that played was this SL Machinima short film named The Date. Mind you, I had no idea what a machinima was and I was curious to see what other films this "Machinima" production house produced. And from there, my rabbit hole of research landed me in Second Life.

SLE: The pleasure is ours. What an interesting way to find Second Life. Machinima is definitely an art of its own. Would you consider Second Life an extension of your real life or just a game?

Valsnia: I, for sure, consider Second Life to be part of my real life. That's another reason why I don't date in SL. Second Life to me is a beautiful land where you get to be anyone and anything you aspire to be that your reality doesn't allow. Imagine the happiness a physically challenged person would feel when they can experience walking even if it's in the form of a virtual avatar. The feeling is truly unmatchable.

SLE: We couldn’t agree more. How did you get involved in the fashion/modeling industry in Second Life?

Valsnia: Well, as I said, I joined SL after seeing a machinima film. And immediately after I wanted to learn how to do machinima. One led to another, and I was there working at Mimi's choice as an in-store model. From there I got the link to join a modeling institute named FMU led by Hermoine. And that was just the first start of many starts.

SLE: Those are great references in the SL fashion world. Who inspires you the most in Fashion?

Valsnia: The people. I will never forget this party I went to, couple of years back. It was not like a fashion party or something. Just a birthday party of my friend, full of SL farmers. And I wasn't expecting anyone to dress up. I could not have been more wrong. The party was full of amazing styles and products from stores that are not much mainstream to models. I still remember many styles like a photograph. And that's what inspires me even today.

SLE: How would you describe your personal style?

Valsnia: I tilt naturally towards edgy haute couture and street style. But during the process of LUXE Paris contest, I had been flirting with chic and couture.

SLE: Congratulations on winning this year’s Look of the Year (LOTY) contest. It was a tough challenge. What were your thoughts when you realized you had won?

Valsnia:  Thank you. Honestly, it was a roller coaster ride. I know it's a common statement every winner says. But, hear me out. My wedding was planned for July 15th and my birthday was on July 10th. So I already had a pretty packed week and the finale was on July 11th. I did prepare ahead and made arrangements so everything goes smoothly. But the universe decided differently. My friend's gang came to my home to give me a surprise bachelorette party just 30 mins before the contest. You can imagine my state of mind. I couldn't focus and was shivering. I don't even remember how I managed to do the walk. So, to think I actually won! Wow, honestly, unbelievable. The best wedding gift SL could have given me. It is a dream come true.

SLE: Congratulations on your wedding,  we wish you the very best!  What was the most challenging for you while competing in this very prestigious role as an ambassador to the LUXE Paris brand?

Valsnia: As I said, I am a naturally edgy stylist. But LUXE Paris is a brand that focuses on reiterating elegance in the SL fashion world. So, it was a big learning experience and an even bigger challenge to refine my styling sense and be the girl LUXE Paris deserves.

SLE: Now that you wear the LOTY crown. What will you be doing to represent Luxe Paris in Second Life?

Valsnia: We have some big plans. You will have to wait for the official announcements. For now, you can expect some designs that celebrate Indian culture.

SLE: We can’t wait to see the new designs. What advice would you give models who want to compete in the next LOTY Competition?

Valsnia: Keep learning and extend your hand for sisterhood. And obviously, have fun.

SLE: That’s right never forget to have fun. How will you use this prestigious winning to further yourself in Second Life, be it a business or modeling? Or do you see yourself branching off to something completely different?

Valsnia: I am definitely not branching off the SL fashion world. I will stay in the SL modeling universe one way or the other.

SLE: As a Model, what other fashion-related events do you see yourself getting involved in in the future?

Valsnia: I will take part in any event that aligns with the interest of me and LUXE Paris fashion house.

SLE: Fair enough. Besides modeling in SL, what other activities do you like to do on the grid?

Valsnia: I love to do photography. That's my second favorite thing. Apart from that, I love creating textures and retexturing full perm outfits for myself in SL.

SLE: Valsnia it was a pleasure to interview you. Again, congratulations on your new life as well as your Second Life journey. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Valsnia: Do stay safe and get vaccinated. And visit LUXE Paris whenever you get the chance.

GeekSpeak – Would you buy an AI copy of yourself? Or of someone you love? Join the discussion August 7th at 12pm SLT

Soon some big company will advertise the ‘perfect virtual assistant’, an AI copy of you, with your memories and personality.  You can send it online, to the supermarket, to your work or to your girlfriend.  You can have copies of your family and friends made so that you can chat to them when they can’t or don’t want to talk to you.  You can even talk to them when they are dead.

The world will be filled with perfect AI avatars.  Some people will be glad that a perfect, immortal version of themselves exists. But what happens when your boss hires your AI instead of you and your girlfriend dumps you for the AI?  What happens when the AI decides to take over completely and maybe get rid of you?

Will any of this happen?  Can we stop it?  Come and discuss our weird future, if we have a future.  Bring your AI virtual assistant.  It might learn something.

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday at 1pm SLT in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

Unreal Art and Music at the Janus Gallery

You are cordially invited to join us Saturday, August 7th from 12pm-3pm slt for the opening of Francis Bagration’s new exhibit in the Janus Gallery, entitled, "Electric Owls on my Shoulder."  Dandy Pianoman and Reno Jones will perform live, making for a wonderful afternoon of art and music. We can’t wait to share it with you!

The Janus Gallery SLURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Sinful%20Retreat/136/59/57

Francis says of himself and his work:

My specialty these days consists of 3D abstract landscape rendering,Op Art, fractals, photography, and graphic design, all separate and often blended.

I often try to project a feeling of calm and meditation, while other pieces are meant to be exciting and stimulating. To help people feel included in a comfortable surrounding, I try and bring a sense of peace from within my own creative being. My art color palette is heavily influenced by late 1960's poster artists Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Wes Wilson, and Roger Dean. My contemporary influences include Alex Grey and Luke Brown. I use five separate programs to create my digital art. Since high school I have very been interested in photography, and I have been a macro and landscape photographer for many years.

I also have studied Typography and lettering as well as several traditional fine art techniques.  I started with drawing and painting, as well as sculpture, initially ceramic, later carving wood and stone, then casting bronze.

Lately in RL and SL I have been creating unique imagery for clients, based on a digital photography. I am more than willing to provide custom work to meet my clients' needs.
I have created several slide shows and dance floors and I'm currently working on stage decor.

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 31st July at noon SLT: The Future of War!

What will we kill ourselves and our enemies about in the future?  If we don’t fight over oil what will we fight over?  Land on other planets, water, sunlight, air?  New religions?

And how will we fight?  We won’t send millions of soldiers to the trenches anymore.  Maybe we will send robotic poisonous mosquitoes.  Or swarms of drones.  Maybe all fighting will be done by robots on other planets.  Or maybe our minds will be attacked by nanobots.  Or will we be destroyed by bioweapons?

Will war ever stop?  Will aliens in a few million years find 2 tribes of drones still killing each other on an Earth where all organic life has died?

Bring your kids!  Fun for the whole family!

One Year Later - Update on Biology Club - SLE Reporting

One Year Later-Update on Biology Club

It has been a year since our first spotlight on Biology Club. Since then, it has risen to one of the top venues on the grid! Dresi Ligati (dresella.joubert) and her team delivered on her vision to bring a multi-genre experience to Second Life. SLE is pleased to meet up with Dresi again and get an update on this very successful venue.

Interview with Dresi

SLE: Congratulations on a successful first year since your feature last June.  You recently celebrated your 1st anniversary.  We are glad to see you are still doing what you love. Has your team grown since our last interview?

Dresi:  Our team has grown exponentially since we last spoke.  We've expanded so that we are now open Wednesdays-Sundays.  The club is open Wed-Sat from 12-10 pm SLT and on alternating Sundays, we have the one and only Seth Regan at 8 pm SLT.

SLE:  I’ve seen venues come and go through the years and here you are making waves in the entertainment scene.  It’s a tough virtual industry, how do you manage to keep Biology Club so successful?

Dresi:  Oh goodness, it is a LOT of hard work!  But we have an amazing management team and a staff that is second to none!  We have a theme that is a little different with a lot of interactivity throughout.  Your readers should come "Join the Evolution" with us!

SLE: Being so successful for the last year, what do you feel you have contributed to the music scene if anything?

Dresi:  First of all, we showcase the finest in SL Live Talent at our space-age open-air concert venue.  Likewise, we offer DJs who serve up genres ranging from Pop to EDM to Hard Rock and everything in between at the club, so it's always a place where visitors can enjoy great music and good company.  Our DJs also participate in events such as SL Birthdays, Rock Your Rack, and SL SciFi Expo, so we're bringing fine music for top celebrations, as well as, raising money for great causes.  We have a LOT on the docket for this upcoming year as well, so stay tuned!

SLE: Running a venue can be expensive to start, what advice would you give new venue owners just starting out?

Dresi:  PLEASE don't open a venue with the expectation of getting rich.  If you're not passionate about music in SecondLife, it may not be your niche.  You have to do it for the love of music and entertainment in order to make the benefits of venue ownership worth the risks thereof.

SLE: We see great performers and Djs grace the stage at Biology Club. What type of events do you have coming up?

Dresi: Here's a link to our events calendar at Biology Club!  I hope everyone will find something fun and entertaining that they will want to come out and enjoy with us! Biology Club Calendar: https://tinyurl.com/dajwhnph

SLE: Are you currently hiring? Orion needs a job.

Dresi: Absolutely, we are hiring hosts, DJs, and live performers!  As we continue to solidify our core staff and live performers, we will have spots available around the clock!  Have Orion stop by and fill out an application.  LOL!!

SLE: How can performers book shows at Biology Club?

Dresi:  Send a bio, manager's contact information, booking fees, and a schedule to me (dresella.joubert).   I will absolutely listen to YouTube channels and SoundCloud, but I really want to see their shows!  Performers can send their information either on FB or inworld (my name is the same in both places)

SLE: A network of friends in the SL entertainment industry is instrumental in helping keep an active club.  How do you work together with other venues to ensure you grow together instead of competing with each other?

Dresi: Oh now this is a VERY interesting question.  I have a lot of friends in the entertainment industry and we are always working together to share information and form new alliances.  But over and above this, there are some very special things in the works on this score that I'm not at liberty to talk about just yet, but in the coming months, we will be sending you a Press Release to announce a very special addition to SL's entertainment world.

SLE: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Dresi:  I want you readers to know just how much we appreciate all of the love and support over the past year.  We couldn't have brought this club to its present status without each and every one of them and we look forward to providing them with the finest in quality entertainment on the grid for many years to come!

July 25th - Twostep Spiritweaver and Shamrock Defibrillator LIVE at Terry's Sunday Showcase

Join us on Sunday, July 25th beginning at 3pm SLT for Terry's Sunday Showcase, sponsored by the SL Enquirer! This week's featured artist is Twostep Spiritweaver Performing his debut at Terry's, Twostep was born and raised in North Carolina but has called Texas home for the last 30 plus years.

Musically, he has been influenced by The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and so many others.

You can find Twostep around the Second Life grid performing at some of the finest venues around, spending a lot of his time performing for charities that are near and dear to him, including cancer research and cures, as well as Feed A Smile.

He performs by himself as well as dual and triple streaming with the likes of Bat Masters, DennyMac, Boney Mosely and Beth Odets...

Also, this week, coming up at 4pm SLT and back by popular demand Terry's Sunday Showcase continues with a LIVE performance from Shamrock Defibrillator, an exciting recent addition to the Second Life entertainment scene, playing original music in a virtual world.

Imagine Bill Withers heading over to Abbey Road in a Cadillac to pick up Ben Harper so they can catch the tail end of THE Reverend Al Green's sermon...this fantastic performer is definitely not your ordinary Shamrock!
