THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE AIR: Spotlight Feature on Distant Thunders Rock Club- Mackenzie Abbot Reporting

I have to admit, I had never heard of Distant Thunders before in all my 3 years on Second Life.
I also have to admit I’m not a rock music kind of guy, but I put aside my preconceptions and headed over to gain an insight into what goes on over there.  I found a warm and friendly place where people actually speak to you when you enter for the first time.  I was made to feel welcome from the second I walked in, and that matters to someone who has been to places where you’re just another cash cow for the club.
So I was intrigued to get the assignment of writing the Spotlight feature for the SLE.  At the anointed time, I was whisked over to the board room and was greeted by a variety of people, including the owners, Joy and Kimmy Maldor.

Mackenzie Abbot: Why did you decide to set up Distant Thunders? Aren't there enough clubs in SL already?

Joy: I never had plans to open a club but I was trying to get a club to my sim when I heard they had changed the sim. And when I spoke to the owner of that club, the response was not very good, so I decided to open one of my own.

M: Was it difficult in the early days, setting up a club?

Joy: It’s easy to open a club, anybody can, but holding on to it is very difficult, 24/7 makes it worse, so yes having a club in SL is a very difficult indeed.

M: And how long have you been open?

J: 1 year

M: Is it disheartening during those quiet times, when a DJ and Host/ess are playing to an empty (or nearly empty) club?

J: We do sponsored events, sometimes just contests to attract VIP’s, but many times it’s what it is, next set improves.
K: We also have really good host/hostess that are good at drawing VIPs in when things become slow.
J: Yes I agree.

M: So what is the unique selling point of Distant Thunders?

J: We value our VIP’s and give personal attention.  Good music, friendly place, fun hangout.
Fiona Whelan: I would also say the different options you have available to them
K: And a lot of other fun things to do while they're here
J: For example, the other attractions at the club include a bowling alley, white water rafting, jet ski-ing, hang gliding, fan boats, sail boarding, ATV riding, paintballing, biker ball, the DT Mansion, weekly sponsored events, firing range, balloon rides and sky diving.  There is something for everyone.

S: and our DJs don’t just play music, they interact and make the VIP’s part of the set.
K: It's about the experience they can have here. It’s a great place to hang out with friends.

M: And is that a bike track I saw out there?
J: This is a Rock and Ride club, so anybody who likes to ride, we have a great track for you to use.

(I laughed)
M: I took the Editor of the SL Enquirer out on my bike and nearly killed her.  I hope you have insurance

J: failure is the stepping stone of success; you will ride well next time :)

M: I appreciate the faith you have in me, but I fear it may be misplaced.  Anyway, if you had to sell Distant Thunders in 3 words, what would they be?

J: Rock Ride & Play

M: That's probably the best answer to that question I’ve ever seen.  Ok last question, what's next for Distant Thunders? Where do you see the club this time next year?

J: Well we have some new services in progress, including Distant Thunder Wedding Venue with end to end wedding service, Distant Thunder DJ/Host School, Distant Thunder Fashion Academy, Distant Thunder Studio and the Distant Thunder Monthly Magazine.
K: Still here, and more popular and better than ever!

M: As a fashion designer myself, I’m intrigued about the Fashion Academy.  What’s that?

J: Distant Thunder Fashion Academy is about helping creators in the fashion community showcase their products. We also have a school for training those who wish to learn the methods and tools it takes to excel in the modelling field. We host a fashion show at the end of every month on the Distant Thunder sim too.

At this point, I concluded the interview and was about to thank everyone for their time when Joy stopped me

J: I would like to take this opportunity, if I may, to thank the DT staff for their hard work every single day. I would also like to thank the management staff for their commitment and hard work, as well as all the people who stood by me for building Distant Thunder.

M: I'm sure each and every single one of them appreciates that sentiment

K: We have the greatest staff you could ever find in Second Life.

Leaving the boardroom and crossing the dance floor, I get an overwhelming sense that Joy and Kimmy take an immense amount of pride in their business and staff.  Not once did the subject of making money come up.  In fact, they seem to be ploughing what money they do make, back into making the club bigger and a more fun place to be.  This reporter finds no fault with that.  Too many clubs in Second Life seem hell-bent on making as much money as they can at the expense of services or staff well being.  Maybe there’s something in that for all of us to consider.
It is refreshing to see that Distant Thunder stands out and truly appreciates their staff and visitors as well as shows where their priorities are for making it a fun place to be.

Creating Awareness About the Nepal Earthquake- Debby Sharma

Photograph Credits Wildstar Beaumont

Imagine a day, when all you have worked for a family, a home comes down to rumble within few seconds or minutes. Imagine a day when all your hard work is lost and you are down to penniless. Imagine a day when you have to live on without your loved one by your side. A 7.8 and a 7.1 magnitude earthquake on Richter’s scale had struck Nepal hardly a month back. Helping hands from many countries and governments were lent. Still a lot of help is needed for the people of Nepal with frequent aftershocks.

A few days back, there was a new charity event, called Join Hands Fashion for Food from 13th to 16th May, 2015 held in Second Life. The sole motive was to create awareness among the general mass to contribute and donate something for the victims of the major earthquake. An event created by Ruby Ornamental and Valsnia with help of many renowned designers, bloggers, builders and clubs to raise a few lindens for those victims.

The event, Join Hands Fashion for Food paired up with World Food Programme. The earthquake struck Nepal on 25th April and 12th May leaving over one million people hungry. The objective of WFP is to deliver food and other immediate relief to the survivors of the hardest hit areas and the areas where it is tough to reach. It also aims to provide logistics to the area for further humanitarian work. There is still a shortage of funds of $150 million USD to provide food for 1.7 million people for just 3 months.

The event in Second Life had fund raised L$ 324, 690 which is almost $1521.74 USD. Although, the event is over, this article is just a follow up to this event, urging the dear readers to make a small contribution and not to forget the fellow human beings who have to re-build their daily lives all over again.

Taisynn's Favorite Places to Shop in Second Life

Shopping events are the pinnacle of high society in Second Life. The most fashionable are often the most well off residents on the grid. It's not the easiest finding the best places to shop at the highest quality. As a fashion blogger since 2013, finding places to shop has been a learning process of both getting to know the fashion and getting to know the designers' work. Here are my Favorite Places to Shop in Second Life.

+ -- Altair Mini Mall @ Cerberus Crossing -- +
Altair Mini Mall is home to the stores Altair, Quirky, Bubblepop, and Dreamsicle. If you're looking for cute Japanese Fashion, commonly known as kawaii "or super cute," this mini mall will suite your needs perfectly.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cerberus%20Crossing/216/45/2478

It is hosted by the main store Altair and owned by Tsurine Resident. Altair specializes in accessories from hair bows and clips, to necklaces and rings, to cat and bunny ears, to a sweet variety of shoes. These items are 100% custom mesh, and can be the cherry on top to any adorable look.

Bubblepop, owned by Morgan.Adamski, sells sweet, doll-inspired skins. Her skins support Slink Physique, Maitreya Lara, and Omega Appliers. if you're looking to create your avatar into a marionette doll, this shop is perfect to make your dreams come true.

Dreamsicle, owned by Jade.Composer, sells poses and accessories perfect for your next adorable photo-op. Upon entering the store, I spotted a creepy-kawaii spell circle rug with poses, and a succubus themed pose set for those who like a sexier version of kawaii.

Quirky, owned by Glitch.Grantham, sells accessories ranging from mesh-body applier wear, like slink nails and omega socks, to custom mesh purses, collars, and panda themed, mesh bento boxes. If you're anything like me, with a love for socks, you'll find your lindens drifting away just to wear them on your pixel legs!

+ -- The Asylum -- + http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Asylum/131/20/37

Asylum, home to the fun and quirky stores of Zanzibar creationZ and Kidz Clozet, the dark and gothic FORSAKEN and SongBird, and the home base of Epic Events, this twisted carnival meets volcano is any hellish darklings' dream. Upon entering, you'll be set upon by pits of lava, hell hounds, and tortured, twisted demons. Sounds like home, if you're of a twisted sort.

Zanzibar creationZ, owned by Arora.Zanziban, is themed on whimsical and quirky delights for any good humored resident. Custom mesh wearable crab claws, mounted cat butts for your wall, and a ballsack necklace are just the tip of the iceberg. You can also find shoes, clothes, and accessories.

FORSAKEN, owned by VincentVile.Desantis, is home to a variety of unisex and gender blind accessories, poses, and clothing for the dark, whimsical, and free. If you can dare to risk potentially falling in the boiling lava pit in the center of the store, you may find gas masks, shoes, and accessories inspired by "a cluster fuck of epicness."

I have to mention, if you're on a budget, they have a fun little Spider's Bounty Hunt going on at the sim. By stepping on the spiders, you have the potential to win one of 147 prizes. Heck, you can keep stepping on the same spider to see what it spits out.

+ -- The Little Sideshow and Boardwalk -- +  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Nuvoletta/115/173/29
Home to the stores such as The Little Bat, Kita's Sideshow, Gothyrotica, Lil' Things, Freekz, and Salem, the Little Sideshow has a lot to offer. Actually, there is so much to offer, I couldn't actually describe them all in this one article. Its home to 13 main stores and 25 flagships, all of which participate in making Nuvoletta an amazing shopping experience.

The stores cover everything from men's and women’s mesh Goth and grunge wear, mesh body appliers, cosmetics, and even dancers and pose shops. There's a little bit of everything for everyone here.

The Little Sideshow is home to the On the Boardwalk Gacha Fair running from May 22nd to June 5th. All kinds of styles of gacha will be at this event, complete with 7Seas fishing for gift cards and fatpacks, carnival rides, and arcade games for everyone to enjoy. Plus, there are over 20 midnight mania and lucky boards on this sim, so this is truly an event rich and poor alike can partake in.

+ -- Nouveaux -- +
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Nouveaux/117/108/21
Noveaux is a colorful shopping experience of both magical and whimsical designs. Home to the stores Cosette, Oxi, Pipit, Neverwish, Soul Mates, Moon Amore, The Horror, Mynx, Pixicat, DearDeer, Evermore, Rabid Squirrel, and Daintree, this full sim can bring delight to any fashionista's fantasies.

You'll be able to find magical dresses held up by birds, as seen in Moon Amore, or a gorgeous priestess' gown made by Pixicat. You'll find creepy kawaii planchette necklaces and eyeball hairbows made by The Horror, and Neon colored platform shoes made by Neverwish, and so much more from all the designers located on this beautifully decorated and scenic sim.

Second Life Love Stories - Lacy Muircastle reporting ...

I undertook to do another of the SL Enquirer’s Avie polls and the question that was to be answered was as follows:  Is it possible to find true love in Second Life and make it in Real Life?

This question struck a chord with me and I decided it has more legs to it than just a straight forward poll, and I obtained permission from Lanai Jarrico, the owner and publisher of the SL Enquirer to turn it into a series of SL love stories

Second Life is not a dating site, but by its very nature it is a social place and for many people it is their third place or third space, which is the social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") and the workplace ("second place").    The following hallmarks indicate a true "third place" -

THE SLE BUZZ:Meet Jenna Odisark; Editor of The Tombstone Epitaph in the 1800’s and active SL Community Member.

Jenna Odisark

Jenna Odisark lives in the United states and joined Second Life in 2009. She has been involved in many things but her real passion is Music. When asked what Second Life meant to her Jenna shared,
“To me SL is a chance to do things, even if virtual, that I probably couldn’t do in the “real world”… like own a live music venue, build and rebuild all sorts of things. I used to own airports and marinas – that would not happen in “real life”.
Jenna continued, There also is the opportunity to live out being in a different time and place. For example, I’m the editor of The Tombstone Epitaph in the 1800’s”.

SLE Buzz Interview

SLE Buzz: How did you discover Second Life and what was your first reaction?

Jenna: The first time I heard about SL was while attending a folk/acoustic music conference in Memphis called the “Folk Alliance”. They had an auditorium with a video projector showing a live music venue in SL, and a group known as “The Duhks” (pronounced ‘ducks’) were performing live from a studio – and each band member had their own avatar. After that I read an article in a broadcasting magazine (I worked in radio at the time) about live music in SL, and thought I’d check it out. Have been SL ever since.

SLE Buzz: What are three special things you wished everyone in SL knew about you and or your club (your event,/ your performance).

Jenna: I’ve been working with friends on a project called Pictascope, which produces film (video) of various subjects in SL. Many are of the era of the silent film. There are plans to organize an SL film festival in the near future.

Also have enjoyed writing and reporting for various publications, including the SLE for a time. Currently am the editor of The Tombstone Epitaph in the western role play sim of Tombstone. The paper mixes stories about events happening in the SL Tombstone, along with stories from RL from the time being portrayed to give some historical perspective, and background.

The most current project is putting together a ‘tour’ of live musicians to recreate a bus tour which happened in RL back in the 1960’s. It had been written about in articles, and chronicled in Tom Wolfe’s “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test”. This bus, named “Further”, was painted in psychedelic designs and traveled all over the country spreading anti-war sentiments and doing much to establish the term “hippie”. Of the members who were traveling on the bus was a musical group who called themselves “The Warlocks” originally, but changed their name to the “Grateful Dead”.

This project in SL will take a bus to various places in SL that doesn’t regularly have live music. The idea being to spread live music to places and people in SL who aren’t familiar with live SL music and hopefully will have them want to listen to more.  Right now there are four performers who will be taking part, and it’s expected there will be more as the project progresses.

Some of the performers on board are  Barby (Celticmaidenwarrior Lancaster), Vinnie (Acoustic Rhapsody ) Etherian Kamaboko, and myself.

SLE Buzz:Can you tell SLE what inspired  your involvement in the SL community?

Jenna: The music. There are so many very talented people doing so many different kinds of music, many who also play the instruments that back them up. In fact it was singing regularly in SL that gave me the confidence to perform at fairs and festivals in RL.

SLE Buzz:What are your thoughts on the SL culture? What would you change to improve the quality of your experience?

Jenna: One thing that has always bothered me are those that seem to think that all of SL is only a game, and the others who are in SL are there exclusively for their own personal entertainment, or completely ignore the fact that there is a live, living person on the other keyboards. It would be nice if more people realized that fact.

SLE Buzz:What have you learned about yourself in SL?
Jenna: Mostly I’ve gained confidence in myself.

SLE Buzz:What is your most memorable moment?
Jenna: There was a time right after I got involved with the live music in SL that one of the musicians was diagnosed with cancer in RL. The music community came together to do fundraisers for him and his family to help with the medical expenses. There is no way that what was raised would cover their costs, but I’m sure in some way it helped. That struck me as a very memorable time…. and it has happened more than once where people in SL have come together to help someone or a cause (like Relay for Life, Breast Cancer research, etc).

What are your favorite places to visit in SL for entertainment?
Jenna: There are so many – generally live music or dance venues such as:

The Merry Pranksters - Prankster Isle (144, 131, 55)
The Acoustic Cave, Isle of Azariah (170, 79, 22)
The Empire Room (burlesque dancing – artistic, not stripping) Copperhead Road (74, 64, 2753)
Moulin Rouge (burlesque dancing) , Moulin Rouge (88, 195, 21)
Avilion Grove Ballroom, Avilion Grove (136, 128, 52)

SLE Buzz:How would you describe your personal style in three words?
Jenna: Shy. Positive. Trusting.

SLE Buzz:Where do you like to shop?

Jenna: The Paris 1910 sims;  Paris 1900 (191, 80, 24)
