GRAND OPENING – AKANGA ISLAND, LIBERI ISLES FRIDAY, 27 May – MONDAY, 30 May, 2022

Come experience the Finest in RP sims!   Authentic Jungle, Desert and Pirates-cove settings provide the ideal locations for extended RP scenarios.

Liberi Isles is set in the 18th Century and based off of both fiction and nonfiction histories of Madagascar during that era. Akanga Island: Liberi Isles is fictionally located off the coast and lost in time which is where the multi-verse RP comes in. The Lore has a fantasy flair to it which incorporates both fact and fiction all in one so that the player can either develop within the created storyline or create their own.

This build is the result of painstaking research on Madagascar regarding their landscapes, wildlife, fauna, insects, and even their people and villages that were around at that time. The result is this highly authentic build.

The Cove is more or less the heart of the Liberi, it serves as the main bridge between the land and sea folk. In a way, because the sim low key touches on the idea of the Multi-verse, it's also a cultural stew pot, exposing characters from various settings to one another to create something new.

Players will love how they can develop their own storylines and incorporate it into either the existing lore or start their own. We are an immersive RP sim and most of our players do para- or semi-para RP. You can use the optional HUD System to complete your character.  You can build, earn in-game funds to trade, and so much more.

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 28th May at noon SLT: How do we fight misinformation?

Misinformation is the problem of our era.  All the time people post untruths for political, ideological, or financial reasons, or just for fun.  Millions of people believe things that are not true.  The situation will get worse as technology improves and deepfakes become common.

The worst examples of false information come from North Korea and Russia but there are plenty from the West as well.  How can we trust anything?

How do we fight it?  Could AI help, perhaps by checking everything posted?  But why would we trust AI?  Or the people who program AI? Are there other solutions?

Will there ever be a time when people can rely on information?  Was there ever such a time?

Come to GeekSpeak on Saturday at noon SLT to ask if we are lost.  Bring your factsheets and your friends!

IM Vulcan, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

Ukraine vs Russia, Settled The Old Fashioned Way - Stacey Cardalines Reporting

"You can't do that, it is an act of depravity!"

"'Controversy creates cash.'"

You are a fly on the wall at a meeting of Show Managers for Divas Wrestling sim. In the interest of full disclosure, this reporter is a "Spokesmodel" at this sim. One of the managers, who may be a Spokesmodel with a newspaper job on the side, is proposing a particularly brutal main event for one of the Divas shows. Before we go further, we must explain a few things about wrestling on SL.

There are two kinds of SL wrestling. One is done with a hud, and is a sport/game. Two wrestlers use a hud to have an actual competition against each other. The Virtual Wrestling Alliance, who advertise with this paper, are this sort of league. While they may use some sort of plot contrivance, they are selling the sport more than the spectacle. I do not know if the wrestlers are paid by the league, paid by tips from the audience at shows, or not paid at all.

The other sort of wrestling is poseball wrestling, which is more of a Performance Art. The matches, while not fixed, are contrived, and the opponents cooperate rather than compete. There is a heavy emphasis on personality, conflict, good/bad girls and just making a scene. The wrestlers live off the tip money from the crowd, so whatever they do to draw attention to themselves is fair game. Divas Wrestling is this sort of wrestling.

Pro Wrestling in general is a sketchy business. Her roots lay in barnstorming carnival shows, the anything-that-draws-attention motif was in full effect as far back as when Grover Cleveland was the President and elements of it stretch back to the Dark Ages. When your show is two people fighting, you don't really need to waste as much money/time/effort on developing scripts or hiring gifted writers. You can be very ham-handed with the presentation.

Thusly, wrestling tends to have broad, easily understood storylines. The dastardly Mean Girl is fighting the adorable All American girl, stuff like that. Wrestlers can be cowboys, European royalty, cheerleaders, bikers, musclemen, axe murderers, surfers, college boys, cannibals, karate guys, etc... pretty much anything that can be painted with a broad stroke and understood by children.

One easy way to perform this task is the Ripped From The Headlines motif, where your storyline reflects some current news event. This motif is good because FOX or CNN or NBC News do the backstory for you, all you need to do after is provide the militia guy or the evil comic book heroine ripoff and your story pretty much writes itself.

With that in mind, it was almost inevitable that, at some point in 2022, this (see below) meeting among wrestling show producers was going to happen:

"We need a main event that gets people riled up."

"I have one."

"Do tell..."

"It's ripped from the headlines."

"Aren't they all?"

"We get a Russian girl and a Ukrainian girl to fight."

"Huh?"

"It'll rule."

"You can't do that, it is an act of depravity."

"Controversy creates cash."

"Thousands of people are dying over there, we can't make light of it."

"The crowd will love it."

"Where would you even FIND a girl from Russia or the Ukraine?"

"I have a Ukraine t-shirt and shorts."

"You're French."

"Close enough."

"Where do you plan to get the Russian?"

"My friend Courtney, she does some model work for me with the SL Enquirer."

"She's from the Ukraine?"

"Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA."

(pause)

"We'll get her a Soviet Union gymnast outfit I saw at a store."

(second pause)

"She's blonde... she'll look Slavic."

"The idea that someone might be offended by this never popped into your head."

"I have a filter which blocks things like that."

"This idea has been terminated with extreme prejudice."

The road to the castle gates is not always the high road, and one has to step on a lot of nice people as they claw their way to the top. The person proposing the fight wasn't a monster. She was just ahead of the curve.

The Autism Resource Center plans to change how neurodivergence is viewed. Moonite1687 Reporting...

Throughout April, the Autism Society invited Autistic individuals, their families, and friends to honor their wide range of experiences by taking time to share stories on social media through the #CelebrateDifferences hashtag. No family or individual's story is the same as any other, and the Autism Society believes the world should recognize the infinite ways the Autism community experiences life.

However, Existential Conundrum feels that Autism deserves more than a month to recognize and share the experiences of "individuals living with Autism" (Autistic people). So, she started the Autist(ic) Resource Center (ARC), formerly known as the Autis(tic) Information Center, in 2019 to minimize the lack of information and support in Second Life for the Autism Spectrum Disorder or Condition. To date, there are only one or two other sources of information in SL, and they are parent-created groups that do not support Autistic adults or listen when [they] speak. To bridge this gap, the ARC has partnered with the Brain Energy Support Team (BEST), an organization that started off helping those with brain injuries and is now moving forward to help build up services centered on neurodivergent adults, a community that is very often overlooked.

For those unaware, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) defines Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, as a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. ASD includes a range of linked conditions that sometimes include singular symptoms and traits. People with ASD often have social communication and interaction problems with non-Autistic people and restricted or repetitive behaviors often caused by overwhelming emotion or sensitivity. The behaviors often exhibited are repetitive movements such as wringing hands, tapping or flapping, and many others. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or focusing.

Albeit different in managing self, many people on the Spectrum could function more easily if the world would change to accommodate Autistic individuals rather than the other way around. Therefore, the ARC has made its mission one that shifts the treatment of individuals who are disabled--a term accepted by the Autistic community--by ASD and other neurodivergent disorders from pity and juvenile treatment to one of acceptance and understanding.

One of the several action plans that Exi is using to begin this shift is to work on producing a peer support group in collaboration with BEST to specifically provide a coaching service to help all neurodivergent adults make and pursue life goals that are entirely individual driven. "It's working with people where they are and making it possible to live their BEST lives," declares Exi. This program is geared toward adults and young adults aging out of programming that panders to children on the Spectrum.

Another action plan is to sponsor more events that close the gap. In April, Exi stated that she hosted the Common Ground collaboration party to answer pending questions and educate individuals on the double empathy problem and the communication issues to be aware of when interacting with Autistic people. Next year, Exi plans to hold an event that discusses cultural expressions and the intersectionality with neurodivergence.

ARC also works with other groups to enhance their services and reach. Currently, Exi is working on creating a hub featuring a series of blogs and websites from the black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities living with Autism to create a space for intersectional voices to be heard when traditionally they are overlooked.

The ARC inworld is open to all Autistic SecondLife residents or SecondLife residents supporting an Autistic individual to drop in and connect with Exi and her spouse for support and resources. The ARC does have an online presence on Facebook and Twitter for soft engagement and digital interaction. The ARC is also open to suggestions and assistance with bringing more content to the grid to make sure the effort to keep Autistic individuals and their struggles in the light.

Consider using the helpful links provided below for more information on managing Autism or interacting with someone with Autism and other neurodivergent disorders. And remember that being different is a beautiful and positive thing.

Door to America: A destination for new residents into SecondLife : Moonite1687 REPORTING

As established SecondLife (SL) users, how many of us can remember our first time touching down in the virtual world as 'newbies' or new residents. It was daunting, exciting, novel, and an overall adventure that would continue to unfurl. The experience is the same for many new residents that have no prior knowledge of the metaverse. Now, add in the criticism, the rules that act against new residents, and the harsh treatment and discrimination that many faces, and this increases the anxiety and intimidation that many feel when trying to interact with residents with years of SL experience their belts. On the side of the more seasoned users, this separatism comes from new residents pleading for lindens or other handouts, and the antagonizing behavior that some of the new residents subject SL users to creates riffs and barricades between them other new residents and the possibility of receiving enriching support. However, many newcomer-friendly communities are cropping up throughout SL to move the dial on new resident support in a positive and more inclusive direction.

Door to America is an organization that started in January 2022 to create a safe space for all new residents. A conversation with Angelor Galanter reveals what Door to America is for and is planning to do to ease the transition from real life to SecondLife for many new residents.

Moonite1687 (M1):  Who started this initiative?

Angelor Galanter (AG): Karlee Heartsong and I started [Door to America] together, and this was a mutual decision to highlight the importance of "human connection" in SL, to be an extension of "self", but there are other reasons to be in SL.

M1:  So, the reason for Door to America is to encourage human connection and support self-expression?

AG: Yes, for example, imagine the one ember of passion you hold for life [you] bring it here and let it blossom without all the metrics you are judged for in rl. [Be it] poet, artist, creator, builder, and you can meet others who feel the same. A person can crystalize and develop themselves and relationships here.

Angelor and Karlee, the co-founders, designed the space to foster self-expression through some of the perks on the Door to America sim. Angelor mentioned that the sim is home to a seven-layer track feature 4000 meters long that acts as a learning aid for new residents. There they can learn to manipulate objects and how to maneuver their avatars. New residents can also come to listen to live music performances, play card games, fish, dance, go for a horseback ride, and more, making human connections and feeling a part of a welcoming community.

Their website, which launched roughly a month after the sim with online, features a list of destinations, tutorials, a covenant for their sim, and a link to meet the teams behind Door to America.

When asked what the plan for Door to America's future looks like, here is what Angelor had to say:

M1: Can you share with me any plans for the future of Door to America? Anything in the pipeline that you can share that will enhance your mission?

AG: I've sent letters to AARP and other real-life organizations to enlist their acknowledgment or sponsorship from colleges to employment, work at home, general disability, and social networks [sic]. Now, it's a matter of becoming a gateway first.

For those unaware, a gateway in SecondLife is a community in the registration pathway on SecondLife.com. These gateways offer their orientation path and give Residents a more accessible direction in the virtual world. Angelor hopes that Door to America will spur a resurgence of SL users by becoming a gateway community, taking the 900,000 user mark to an additional million to increase the number of human-to-human experiences that we all could share.

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 21st May at noon SLT: What if we could all understand each other?

Will we all speak just one language in the future?  Will that one language co-exist with thousands of local languages? Or will it be the only language we know?

Or will we understand each other because we have AI devices, either external or internal, that can translate anything?  Will that revolutionize the world?  Suddenly you can have a deep discussion about Shakespeare with your Iranian neighbour or watch a football game with your Norwegian friends.  People will even be able to invent their own languages.  Will this AI bring peace to the world or will it bring more problems?  What happens if the AI devices suddenly stop working?  Babel AI?

Come to GeekSpeak at noon SLT on Saturday to discuss the world of words.  Bring a dictionary and your friends!

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

AND IT’S OFF TO THE RACES - ROYAL ASCOT STYLE: JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC), REPORTING

The other day I was bouncing around the Grid, making sure it was in good working order and checking out some of my favorite haunts, when I got a note from my editor to check out “Royal Ascot”.  With No idea what to expect – Disco Club? Book Club? Wrestling Match?  I decided to hop on over.  I learned it was none of these.  While there I met the delightful Liz Wilner, the champion behind the Royal Ascot Build, and she graciously deigned to help me understand the Mission and vision of the RA Build, and I gotta tell you…it sounds like fun!

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) JB:    So tell me, Liz.  What is The Royal Ascot anyway?

Liz Wilner (LW): Royal Ascot is an annual horse racing event that takes place in June in England not far from Windsor Castle.  We try to stay true to as many elements of RL Ascot as we can, but we stage it in a more Victorian/Edwardian ambiance.  You will see ladies in their fancy hats, men in proper morning suits and top hats, a Royal Carriage ride that opens the event, the horse races themselves and a party to end the day.  There is a whole week of activities at the site including shops on the heath, entertainment, and the day before Royal Ascot Day, we have The Count’s Cup Races.  After all the racing, parties and fancy dress events are finished, we have an auction at the site where people can bid on the custom horses made for all the races.

JB:     What is your connection with Rosehaven?

LW:  Co-founder Oriella Charik and I have lived in the Realm of Rosehaven for fourteen years.  For the past several years, Rosehaven has generously hosted Ascot, specifically in the region known as Borderlands, owned by Ceejay Tigerpaw.  Rosehaven is a gorgeous estate and fits perfectly with the entire feel of Ascot.  We have been so blessed to have the support of Realm of Rosehaven owner Princess Selena Anansi and all the Denizens here for this event.  Many visitors to the yearly Ascot explore around Rosehaven … and then decide to stay!

JB:     And what is this “Team ACTS”.  Who are they, and what do they do?

LW:  Aether Chrononauts/Tiny Steps is one of many teams for SL Relay for Life, we are people from the Steamlands together with the Tinies of Raglanshire.

JB:     Do you have a fundraising goal for this year?

LW:  The mission of the American Cancer Society (ACS) and Relay for Life in SL (RFL in SL) is to raise money to help in the fight against cancer, research for a cure and give support to those afflicted.  We have no specific goal; we just try to exceed what we raised last year (almost two million lindens in 2021) and provide a fun way for people to get behind the cause.

JB:     What sorts of incentives do you provide for people to donate?

LW:  We have several fun things for people to interact with Ascot.  You can donate to get the honor of naming one or more of the horses at the Royal Stables; or you can also donate to get your favorite horse in one or more of the lineups for the races.  Additionally, throughout the race days, you can enter raffles to win prizes and gift cards donated by shops from all over SL.  There are also opportunities to become a VIP Sponsor for Ascot, purchase a Royal Box ticket (very coveted seating), or, this year, enter a raffle to ride in the Royal Carriage to open Royal Ascot Day.

JB:    Horseraces, Horse Auctions, merchants, vendors of every kind?  I hear you even have a Wrestling Match scheduled? How is that working out for ya?

LW:  So much fun! To see it all come together with so many generous and creative people…it’s amazing.  We will have Premier Wrestling of SL put on some matches on the heath this year.  They are excited to do “old-school” bouts, complete with late Victorian uniforms and an old-style ring – and we are looking forward to watching!

JB:    This looks like quite an operation you have here.  Did you do this all yourself, or did you have help?

LW:  We have a great team of people to get this all up and running.  As I mentioned, Lady Oriella Charik and I founded the Ascot event for Team ACTS nine years ago.  Oyo Breedables creates all the custom horses, with our Royal Horse Master, Dirk Danger, heading up anything involving the horses, races, auction, and all the fun ways to donate at the stables.  Pazako Karu created the system for the naming and lineup activities.  Bain Finch has been expertly filming Ascot for the past few years.  Gerrard Winstanley is our superb Emcee for Royal Ascot.  Count Harlow Bloodrose and Arcadian Vanalten host The Count’s Cup Races.  Wildstar Beaumont, also C0-Captain of Team ACTS, photographs everything.  And I cannot say enough about the overall support we get from the RFL Committee and Community…Stingray, MamaP, Gem, Elayne, Cassie and Oldesoul Eldemar…all of the wonderful merchants and sponsors….too many to name.

JB:    I understand you have several events coming up in support of Royal Ascot?  What types of events, and when?

LW:  Yes.  Royal Ascot Season, as we call it, begins June 1 with an exhibit on some facet one might find at such an event.  This year, we will be honoring HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee with an exhibit about Royal Jewels.  The exhibit will run through June 30.  June 13th, we begin Ascot Shops Week.  Merchants and vendors from all over SL sell their wares at stalls on the center heath of the racetrack site.  We typically ask that the wares represent things from the time period of 1700- 1910’s, but there are always some surprising items here and there.  During the Shops Week, we have various DJ’s and other entertainment offerings as well. June 17th is The Count’s Cup Race Day; June 18th is Royal Ascot Day; and finally, June 19th is the auction of the horses.

JB:    I understand you have a Dress Code here?  Does it apply everywhere on the build?

LW:  There is a dress code for the Grandstands, but everyday dress is fine for those who wish to come to the races and view from the General Seating areas or on the center heath.  Come shop and enjoy the entertainment…just be clothed!

JB:    Where can people go to find out more about Ascot and some of the events you have planned?

LW:  We advertise via the ACS/RFLSL calendar and website, inworld groups, Discord, various news and events outlets inworld, and of course…SL Enquirer!

JB:    Is there anything else you would like to share with our SL Readers?

LW:  Just that it is a privilege to make Royal Ascot SL happen every year and work with the amazing people who help put it all together.  I am honored to be Co-Captain of Team ACTS…a fantastic team known for its unique events such as the Time Travelers Ball, Antiquity Fair Week, Privateer’s Ball, ROMA Spring Festival and Tinies Ball to name a few the team holds throughout the RFL season.

So, there you have it folks.  Guaranteed to be a rip-roaring time…even if that time is the late 1800s.  Grab your top hat or parasol and come one down.  Or, if you prefer, come as you are and snag a seat in the general viewing area for the races. Check out the special events and activities, everyone is welcome!  You’ll be glad you did.
