SONNET

When,
in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
I
all alone beweep my outcast state
And
trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries
And
look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing
me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured
like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring
this man's art and that man's scope,
With
what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet
in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply
I think on thee, and then my state,
Like
to the lark at break of day arising
From
sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For
thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings
That
then I scorn to change my state with kings.
|
PARAPHRASE
When I’ve fallen out of favor with
fortune and men,
All alone I weep over my position
as a social outcast,
And pray to heaven, but my cries
go unheard,
And I look at myself, cursing my
fate,
Wishing I were like one who had
more hope,
Wishing I looked like him; wishing I were surrounded by
friends,
Wishing I had this man's skill and
that man's freedom.
I am least contented with what I
used to enjoy most.
But, with these thoughts – almost
despising myself,
I, by chance, think of you and
then my melancholy
Like the lark at the break of day,
rises
From the dark earth and (I) sing
hymns to heaven;
For thinking of your love brings
such happiness
That then I would not change my
position in life with kings.

I am finally
back from a two week vacation from Second Life and finally all caught up with
emails . I didn’t skip town or fly off to some other country or some fancy trip
away, I stayed in Pa and was host to
family that flew in from the Caribbean and Hawaii.
With a
houseful of 9, plus more family that came to visit the visitors, Numbers
reached to a good 14 at times! My days
were jam packed with school, finals, food, late nights, food, outings, food, a
zoo trip, food, bowling and more food! I was, to say the least, very busy! With an extra few pounds added to my scale
and a totally embarrassing bowling score…I am officially back in Second Life.
Before I
share what transpired in the last couple weeks, I would like to give Lacy
Muircastle a big shout out for stepping into my heels and handling SLE operations
while I was gone. Thank you! If you all
didn’t notice anything different, my sneaking away for a couple weeks went
unnoticed…perfect.
Blurring the Lines Between SL and RL -DoctorKaren Kanto Reporting…

There is, and has always been, a lot of discussion and even
argument about the lines and boundaries between "real life" and
"second life".
In this short piece, I hope to explore some of the
issues involved in this, some of the potential dangers, potential benefits,
and, ultimately, answer the question, "Can an SL relationship lead to
lasting love?" In this, I am following many other authors who have written
great pieces on the subject. This is simply my contribution to the mix.
For the purposes of this discussion, let's start with some
definitions. Real Life (RL) is that set of experiences you have while you are
alive. Second Life (SL), on the other hand, is a computer network-mediated means
of communication and interaction. As such, it is just one of all the various
ways you might communicate or interact in your RL. SL is a part of RL. SL IS
RL. So those who assert that "this is a REAL person behind my avatar"
are quite correct. Up to a point. Not all of RL is "the same thing".
To understand SL better, let's look a moment at RL and the concept of
multiplicity of personality.

I recently celebrated my fiftieth birthday in real life which was a really big deal for me, hitting half a century and I still feel the same which is a bonus.
At the end of this year I will be celebrating my fourth rez day in Second Life and for me both experiences vary a lot. Some people celebrate their real life birthdays within Second Life and vice versa with their rez days and real life.

Snake , my liege, my boss, my friend
was devastated that I was putting in my notice. Victor, my closest
friend, wasn’t pleased. He told me to walk away from the clan, have fun
like him, forget those that didn’t like me, that they shouldn’t ruin my
experience.
Between the two of them I was torn… On one hand I did
enjoy talking to them, I did have fun at times, but I didn’t want to have Amy
or Ophelia on my mind while I was dealing with my real life. Snake went
out of his way to have someone teach me to DJ even so I wouldn’t have to work
the pole any longer. I felt lost and lonely on Second Life, I wasn’t
getting a lot of the concepts, and there was a lot of drama. I logged
off, telling Snake and Victor I would think it over, but it just seemed too
much for too little. I could just give them my e-mail.

There is a certain inherent eroticism around Second
Life for the many graphic images that appeal to human nature: the skins and
shapes that are models of perfect and sensual bodies, the provocative clothes or
the lack of them and even the animations that give avatars a sexy twist.
Additionally,
this platform allows us to voice with each other without having to reveal our
identity, lifting eroticism into a whole new level: sexy voices; foreign
accents that are appealing and lure the receiver. Thus, physical attraction is
replaced for voice attraction and our powerful minds do the rest. All this affects
our emotions related to sexuality.
On the other side of the scale there is the weight of
moral and emotional values, either in shape of a real relationship where virtual
sex is a way of cheating on the real partner or in shape of personal boundaries
where virtual sex makes no sense and is rejected for the lack of physical
connection or lack of objectives.

This article originally appeared in The Huffington Post
| Meditating on Linda's Island ~ ETU Abbracciare |
Summer can usher in a lot of commitments and meditation is a helpful
way to set the tone for the coming months so we enjoy life rather than
deal with stress. For the past four decades, I have been helping people
to live better lives by teaching them techniques to help them handle
stress through correct breathing. Many view meditation as a structured
Eastern practice with rules for how it is done. This is true for people
who practice within that belief system.
But what about the rest of us: the businessperson, parent, mate, friend, family member, who doesn't follow that philosophy but still wishes to create the awareness that meditation offers and reduce stress in their lives? How can they sizzle away stress as the seasons change?
Meditation is about being mindful of your spirit enough to focus inward for the serenity and guidance you need. It's having a moment to hear yourself think. We have the answers within us, and with a steady routine, we can harness a personal power that will remove much of the emotion that stress can cause. The only steadfast rule is slow breathing. Proper breathing is an advantage to handling life and health matters, and is especially helpful for dealing with overall stress. I have outlined a simple method of breathing to get you started so that anyone, at any age, can enjoy meditating.
- Make an appointment with yourself to go to a space you have designated where you will not be disturbed. Make those you live with aware that you are meditating.
- Wear clothing that is loose and comfortable, and choose a time of day/night that is conducive to you being able to observe the silence within. Play some soft instrumental music to help set the mood.
- Start by taking some slow, deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth, just as slowly.
- Sit quietly and allow yourself to sense your surroundings. Don't worry about noise or distraction; that will change when you begin a regular routine.
- Follow the inhalation and exhalation of your breathing, using the timing of your breathing or your heartbeat as a marker to mindfulness.

Capturing the essence of Ron Sin

By Sarah Elizabeth Brenham and Lacy Muircastle ....
There are some extraordinary avatar’s that inhabit Second
Life and just one such avatar is that of Ron Sin.
Ron’s persona is cheeky, fun and quirky (with a wicked sense of humour), but he is also incredibly
loyal to his friends. He has a passion for making a difference in the lives of
those he interacts with.
Ron’s human self, hails from New York. He migrated over from
ActiveWorlds, an older MMO which came into existence in about 1995. He says he was looking for a more
sophisticated game with better graphics, so he rezzed into Second Life in 2006, and has been here
ever since.
Ron’s RL background is in photography and in 2008 he
translated that into SL photography too. Photography means to him, limitless
creativity and new perspectives. He
comments “There are angles and perspectives that a photographer can attain in a
digital world, that are virtually impossible in real life. In SL, prop investment is minimal because you
can literally build whatever you imagine, in order to make the shot.” Although he doesn't specialize in one area of
photography in SL, he does lean towards landscapes and head shots and he is often
called on by designers for his talent in green screen. Green screen is the process whereby a person
or object is placed in front of a screen that is green and then the photographs
are taken. After the photograph has been taken, the background is edited to the
client’s requirements. This is a versatile technique which allows for
flexibility and creativity.

In
the past I have written about the ways Second Life© has influenced the real
world.
I have written about how Governments, the Justice System and the
entertainment world is using Second Life to breach distance and time zones in
order to reach as many people as possible with information, assistance and
entertainment. Second Life has become an invaluable instrument helping people
to access services, gain information and provide resolution to real life
problems. It has become a workplace, an extension of offices and a global town hall
providing services in real time to citizens across the globe. Second Life has
also brought together individuals and organizations from around the world,
making it easier for collaboration, sharing information and mentoring.
Recently,
I learned of yet another important use of Second Life© - education. Education,
learning and teaching are being expanded and explored in great depth here on
Second Life. The technology of the gaming world is turning into an innovative
tool for studying different teaching methods and defining what is teaching.
Exploring the ways in which we learn and providing advances in technology,
applications, research and access to information. Second Life© has become a
global classroom. This month, one of the most extraordinary conferences will,
once again, be held on Second Life©, The Virtual Worlds Best
Practices In Education Conference. If
you can attend one presentation of this conference over the three days it runs,
I urge you to do so. You won't want to miss this.

Weddings in Second Life have become more popular with
couples over the years. In the beginning of Second Life when avatars partnered

significant other displayed in their profile.
Today beautiful elaborate wedding
ceremonies have become popular in Second Life as more venues offer services and
designers create stunning wedding dresses, bouquets and accessories for the

Inspired by his real life volunteering work for a children's hippotherapy program where he saw that the therapists needed better tools to help the children, Failed Inventor (Cody Rauh in real life) has launched a ‘Kickstarter’ appeal to raise funds to make this much needed project a reality.

Dating in Second Life
can have its ups and downs and you may run into a variety of couples, including
couples who are married in real life, but have relationships or are married in
Second Life. This is a subject which is often commented on by many people. Some
feel that it is ok to be married in real life and to have a relationship in
Second Life, while others may think that if you are married in real life then
you should not date or have a relationship in Second Life.
I was able to catch up
with three different couples, all of which are married in real life and dating
or married in Second Life. Warning the names have been changed to protect the
innocent (or married).

Tombstone is a role-play estate set in the year 1899 that
portrays an anachronistic recreation of the late 19th century
boomtown atmosphere.
Stareyes Galaxy took a coach journey there, to explore the
Wild, Wild West of SL. This is her travel report. I set out with the task of reporting to our Readers the
true state of the West.
In many reports, what I felt a gross exaggeration; the
dangers of the frontier are overplayed, and I felt someone needed to set the
facts straight.
Landing at the welcome center, a greeter is there to
welcome the casual visitor and take her through an orientation, upon which she
will be able to enter the Tombstone proper. My greeter was an Apache woman,
whom, after a first shock, I found very welcoming.
I decided to interview as many people as I could, to get
a feel of the atmosphere, and how things are run in these parts. First, a
rather liberally-dressed young woman, known as Frisco June, led me to Dutch
Annie’s, a local establishment for questionable entertainment. She has been in
Tombstone for two years.

Not long ago we were celebrating St. Patrick's Day,
jiggling and reeling in an Irish style to the sound of traditional Irish music.
But while outsiders listen to it as exotic and captivating music by the traditional instruments used and the “magic” sounds produced by those instruments, Celtic music transcribes many valuable stories that resume the cultural identity and heritage of the Celtic nations: souls abundant of emotions.

Geographically bordered, this music genre, covering a
spectrum from pure acoustic folk to folk rock, etc, becomes global in this

Haven’t you ever secretly wished to come across a

would solve your money troubles for a while but it is not likely to happen. Sadly
lindens don’t fall from the sky and spending all day long walking down the

of time. So how can we stop being broke in Second Life? When easy money is hard
to get, hard working money seems to be the easiest call.
Imagine what you could have with some extra lindens: renewing
the wardrobe or buying that gorgeous outfit that you have been anxious to get
but can’t afford; giving yourself a complete makeover; refurnishing the house or
getting a king-sized bed for that huge house that you have been sighing for… Now
that I got you motivated, it's time to kick laziness away and to take action on
finding a job.
Here are some tips on how to find a job and, above
all, how to keep it.

TerryLynn Meolody to many of her fans is a talented performer that not only sings on stage but also connects with her fans. I was lucky enough to have a chat with Terrylynn and asked her a few questions over a cup of coffee.

What gets under an Avatar’s
skin? When you log in day after day is there something that makes you
cringe?
When you’re exploring Second Life do you have something that
makes you want to just pull your hair?
What irritates people
that play Second Life is the question I went to find out. It seems,
everyone had a similar answer that even I can nod and definitely agree with; Griefers.
I have one right now
that keeps sending me group notices. I can’t decline it. I can’t even block it, and he just repeatedly sends
them. Linden Labs has refused to help even though I’m a premium
member. I hate a griefer!

Real-life pictures in Second Life © – Stareyes Galaxy reporting ….
In
Second life ©, there is a bifurcation of the attitude to sharing one’s own
real-life (RL) pictures. Many avatars are dead against such a practice, saying
that SL and RL are two separate entities. Then there are others who freely
share their real-life pictures, right on their profile. Furthermore, many design
their avatar appearance to match their real-life looks. I interviewed some
avatars to get behind the reasoning behind the different views of sharing
real-life images.
The
question of the day is “Does sharing real-life pictures enhance the fantasy, or
kill it?” I met Anastasia at MIAMAI main store, where she works as a model. “It depends,” she answered.
SLE: How, and on what does it “depend"?
Anastasia: First and foremost, it would depend
on how well and for how long I have known the person. I am not going to give
out RL info or images to just anyone I come across.
SLE: Would you, at a certain point,
insist on seeing that other person's RL picture, and would you be willing to
share yours?
Anastasia: I don't know that I would insist on
sharing RL pictures. I have known many people
in my SL for a year or more and we have never seen a RL pic of each other...
With others whom I consider close friends or family I have shared a RL image,
and they with me.
SLE: Does seeing
someone's RL picture change your perception of that avatar?
Anastasia: I can't
say for me personally it has. I get to know the person first and foremost, and I
try not to judge a book by its cover. If
in a SL relationship of a romantic nature, it may alter perceptions, as you do
get used to someone looking a certain way as an avatar which may differ greatly
from their RL person, but the underlying person is still the same either way.
