Starting of a social networking site is something that takes a lot of work. You have to plan the layout, pick the name, and all the features you haven't yet come up with. The best thing about a social networking site is the ability to connect with people around the world. Social networking sites seem to be the best way to connect with people these days. So let's get inside the head of one of Second Life's newest social network creator: Pandora Drezelan, owner of Avatar Life.

Snail Races are one of those "only in Second Life" phenomina unique to the grid. Organized by RacerX Gullwing, they usually take place on a track. But once a month during the Relay for Life fundraising season, there are cross-country, or cross-sim races, taking place across numerous sims. The April Cross-Sim race was held on April 28th on the mainland, going past noted locations such as "The Shelter," and ended a few sims away from Abbots Areodrome. And a certain fox reporter was there to cover it.

Path of Support |
Virtual Ability has been building communities of support for
people with disabilities in virtual worlds since 2007.
Studies are showing that bringing people with mental
disabilities into virtual worlds is good for and benefits them. And many of you
are probably thinking, what does this have to do with anything? Well, that’s
what Virtual Ability is about. It helps people with mental disabilities to come
into the worlds, and be successful with them. But SL is not the only world they
do this is, but is what we will be talking about.
Virtual Abilities is present in both real life, and Second
Life.

The 20th Anniversary of the 1992 LA Riots...April 29th-May 4th.
I have to admit as much as I advocate machinima as a wonderful storytelling format, I do think one should seriously consider what platform might best serve to present a message or simply reach an audience. In 2009, my book KJLH-FM and the Los Angeles Riots of 1992: Compton's Neighborhood Station in the Aftermath of the Rodney King Verdict (McFarland), I wrote the story of one African-American radio station (owned by Stevie Wonder) and its crew that reported on the civil unrest as it unfolded in front of the broadcast studio.

SL Newser News- SOPA Act Two? CISPA to be Decided in US House as Soon as Today - Bixyl Shuftan Reporting...
Remember the mess over SOPA in December and January? This proposed law had the potential for becoming "The Great Firewall of America," possibly meaning the end of favorite places online such as Youtube, Facebook, and Second Life. Despite a Congress seemingly poised to approve it, opposition to it and it's sister bill PIPA grew in numbers. The backers of SOPA eventually shelved it from a vote, and the opponents had seemingly won.

Akasha Sternberg is a certified model, lover of fashion, and a blogger. She graduated with La Mode Modeling Agency on the February 25, 2012.
Akasha talks about her introduction to Second Life and her modeling career:
‘I heard about Second Life on a German radio show. I was curious and downloaded it. I stayed for about a year, but got bored, so I left for three years, only to come back with a bang, and I’ve loved it ever since.
‘In regards to modeling, I’ve learnt to do my own HUDS and about new fashion and styling genres - some of them I ended up loving dearly.
Titanic: Truly ‘A night to remember’- Mariella Anna Reporting...
Although
small in comparison to modern cruise ships, in 1912 Titanic stood alone in
terms of sheer scale, opulence and luxury. Titanic evokes an age of excess, of
unimaginable luxury, quality and obvious displays of wealth and status. It was
the ‘Belle Epoque’ which was to last up
until up until the first world war, before in Europe at least, class and privilege
were fragmented and changed forever. In the last moments
of the Titanic the division of wealth, and position on the social scale was
acutely illustrated by the fact that only 25% of third class passengers
survived.
In 1912 the most expensive first-class suite on the Titanic
cost $4,350 the staggering equivalent of $75,000
today- remembering tickets were only and rather ironically sold one way. In comparison, those travelling on a third
class ticket were also subjected to a level of luxury they probably had never
experienced before, certainly they would have had to invest a lifetime of
savings for the crossing, in the hopes of a new life in America.
Having
arrived at the Titanic exhibit prior to boarding the ship itself, I was struck
by the attention to detail given to create the exhibition centre with its
various Titanic artifacts, pictures of the ship during construction and
explanatory notes, sculpted china and even a first class menu giving a glimpse
of life on board. A scale mode of the
ship in a glass display case gave no clue as to what actually awaited us once
we’d boarded.

Some weeks ago, I had accidentally come across the school Sacred Cauldron on SL search. The description interested me as it stated that it is a virtual pagan academy. Curious, I asked my editor if I could cover a story on it. When I finally got the go signal, I went on to request a short interview on Sacred Cauldron's Dean, Dean Belladonna Laveau, and two of the school's students, Tea Tephi and Sapphire Chaosus.

With the 100th Anniversary of the voyage and sinking of the famous passenger liner Titanic, the attention of Second Life residents is drawn to the Grid's own Titanic. Opened in 2009, the ship attracts many residents on a daily basis. Some are drawn to the ship's haunting history, some to take a special someone on a date in a place of atmosphere, and some a little of both. This weekend, there were some special events aboard to honor those who perished in the sinking.

Espiritu Photography |
Modern photography began in the 1820’s
with the first permanent black and white photographs. In 1860, color photography was
introduced. Jumping to 1988, Fuji DS-1p
was the first digital camera to capture images in a computerized file. Today Photography
has evolved with digital enhancing programs, graphics and computer technology. Many of us own more than one camera, whether
it’s on a smart phone, laptop or multi functioning digital video camera. It is
an art form that has improved through the years, helping people capturing
memories along the way.
In Second Life, anyone can take a
snapshot but it takes a certain eye for angles, lighting, backgrounds, poses
and editing skills to create that perfect professional shot. Each photographer
has their own style and technique that separate them from the rest; it is a
matter of preference and quality customer service.

Pub With No Beer |
I
watched Tpenta Vanalten’s performance at a great little Australian hotel. ‘The
Pub With No Beer’ and got to speak to him about his work and Second Life.
Tpenta (Alan in RL) talks about his early days in Second Life and the beginning
of his musical career:
‘I
had my fifth rez day last December. I came to Second Life initially I think out
of curiosity. I made a number of friends at a club called Odds & Ends. It
didn't take me long to figure out that without Linden dollars it was going to
be rough’
‘Odds
& Ends had "dance pads" which let you "earn" Lindens
but it really was a slow way to earn money. I hosted events at a club for a
while before hearing about live music in Second Life.’
‘I
remember very clearly the first time I played, just not quite when. It was
probably about a year after I started.’
‘One
of the highlight music events of the week used to be Freestar Bay. It would
start around 7pm on Saturday evening and run 30 minutes sets of booked artists
until midnight and then an open mic while there were folks who wanted to
play.’
‘Autumnfoxx
would be there for the whole event. Organizing the performers onto the stage,
getting streams right etc for the whole time. I decided to have a go at the
open mic. Rosedrop (Rusty) Rust brought me out to Pannies and let me test my
setup on his stream before jumping up at FSB, but my first real gig in Second
Life was at the open mic in Freestar Bay.’

Did you Know? |
Only 26% of healthcare facilities have a robust, tested disaster recovery plan, according to an article on Health IT Exchange. Not surprising, considering the wide variety of data types and applications involved – email, medical records, multiple diagnostic imaging PACS, financial processing.
But recovery planning can be critical to your facility’s survival. Disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the tornadoes in Missouri and the tsunami in Japan have shown that healthcare facilities are at risk. And patients depend on healthcare facilities to have their records, even in the wake of a disaster.
The good news is that recent advances in technology are making the process far simpler than it was even just two years ago. The ability to aggregate data from multiple sources into an intelligent storage platform — one that has built-in redundancy and data protection — has eliminated a lot of the labor and expense.
Cloud technology also can enable constant backup of your archives to a geographically remote location, which is much safer than tape backups stored nearby. And recovery via cloud can be fast, allowing a facility to be up again within hours.

Having your photo taken in Second Life can be an amazing experience, whether it’s for your profile, a pic with friends or a model portfolio, however there are a few things that you should consider first before committing yourself to a photo shoot.
Every photographer is different and they each have their own methods, styles and ideas, some may want to photograph you without your AO, while others will want to take some shots with you wearing it for a more natural look, you may even be asked to remove your hair for some poses for a better final result.

Lynnie Michigan had decided that this particular night was going to be her last night on SL. Though she had become a successful singer on SL and had many friends, let's face it, SL is not always sunshine and roses. Just like in RL there are knuckle heads around that can ruin all the positive things about SL. That is when a mutual friend introduced her to Porkie Bonetto. As she told me: “I was ready to leave sl. The night I met Porkie I was silently saying goodbye to sl because I found no purpose to being here. I was at this one club, in fact it was the old club that was where our current club is, and landed next to him. He was so cute there dancing with his arms and legs flying every which way lol. I noticed how he talked to people in chat. It was so real and he treated everyone with respect. It was just his mannerisms and the way he worded everything I could tell he was genuine. I had inquired who he was and she told me to say hi and I said noooooooooooooooo! I was rather shy. Finally she got tired of answering my questions and told Porkie to say hello to me. He did! I guess you could say he truly "Had me At Hello". That was June 18, almost 3 years ago.”

Lanai Jarrico at EasterTown |
Easter is a holiday that is observed on the first Sunday after the full moon by Christians around the world. It consists of a feast and celebration of the resurrection of Christ. For others, it's a trip to the mall with the kids for pictures with the Easter bunny followed by a quick stop at a convenient store for cheap baskets with excessive fake grass and jelly beans. To each his own.
In Second Life©, Easter and other religious holidays are observed in a variety of ways. Avatars can go to Sunday services at a church, worship in a synagogue, temple or other sacred places with their virtual family and friends. For Easter, activities include, special services, Easter egg hunts, holiday themed parties and concerts to raise funds for Charities and other humanitarian causes. Besides that, lots of things go on sale, and in the role play community, it's fun to just use your imagination.

Spiritfire Music Isle |
I had the pleasure of interviewing Shar Salmson for this week’s Spotlight. She’s a lovely entertainer, whose company, Spiritfire Entertainment, acts as an agent for numerous musical venues and artists in Second Life.
Sher invited me to the interview on her island, called Spiritfire Music Isle, appropriately. It’s a relaxing place, playfully shaped as a guitar! There is a large stage placed where the bridge would be. A circular deck for the acoustic sound opening. A rough stone fret walkway leading up the neck. And six piers on either side of the head to complete the tuning keys. In addition, on other parts of the island, you’ll find an intimate bar, small shops, and hotspot streaming of various artists.

While people usually think of Easter bunnies and chocolates this time of year, for churchgoers it's also time to celebrate what Easter originally meant, the Resurrection. Second Life has it's share of churches. Among them is the New Life Church in the Shelton sim.

Avacar Bluestar and Lanai Jarrico |
It’s not too often I get to sit down with another Media CEO and share stories about what brought us to Second Life, let alone simultaneously conducting an interview with one another. Talk about an awkward first meeting set up by a friend...
We were both interested in interviewing the other but unsure who was doing the asking at the time. After breaking the awkward silence, we shared a mutual introduction. Avacar initiated the beginning of an interesting conversation by asking me questions about my history here in the virtual world. It turns out, his virtual world experience started much like my own. I quickly learned that we both have one starting point in common; The Sims Online. Avacar and I joked about making pizza as we sat in my office sharing our stories. He told me how he took over GWN operations when the founder suddenly passed away. At the time, Avacar was a leading writer that wanted to continue his friend’s vision. He shared his dedication and sacrifices and how some of it even created turmoil in his real life. Looking back I’m sure it was worth the effort, but it is now time for him to move forward to another media project. *gasps* Opps! Did I just let the cat out of the bag?

Just when you think nothing on sl can surprise you anymore, you find yourself in the middle of a WWII aviation reenactment as a side gunner on a Japanese bomber with a white wolf wearing angle wings as your pilot. No kidding, but I digress. What started out four years ago as a small group of nomadic aviator friends flying around the grid for fun has evolved into a multi sim operation, the largest aviation group in sl with over 2400 members and a bunch of downright fun folks to hang out with. Meet “The Flying Tigers”.
