SCREW BARBIE..I WANT TO BE A ROLLER DERBY GIRL - MariellaAnna Resident reporting...

A friend of mine suddenly and out of the blue announced that she was in the SLRA roller Derby team and did I want to come along and watch a match?  I searched my sketchy mental database to come up with any point of reference I might have had as to what she might possibly have been talking about. Here, let me just point out I’m English, most of us haven’t heard of roller derby much less know what it’s about and it’s for that possible reason I eventually came up with a mental picture of female ex-cons or women with excessive tattoos racing round a track on roller skates, trying to kill each other between chugging down cans of lager and chain smoking cheroots.

VMS News: Musician Bara Jonson: A Success Story - Angharad Catteneo Reporting...

Bara Jonson

Bara Jonson, a Second Life musician from Ã…hus, Sweden, has one of the greatest real life success stories I’ve encountered. I remember viewing a documentary on his Second Life so it was a treat to catch him live on the Grid. His music is a little alternative rock/country and his acoustic guitar complemented his strong voice. Listening to his performances, it’s easy to tell that Bara’s original songs were inspired by real life experiences.

I interviewed Bara about his music career and his journey to success.
Bara started with music at age seven and continued into his adult years. Around 1997 he took a ten-year break from music to concentrate on a business recruitment company. When the world’s economy took a nosedive in 2007, no one was hiring and as a result, recruitment companies weren’t needed. That was when he first started playing Second Life. The virtual world was a way to take his mind off of real life, although he had no knowledge of the music community within it.

“Well, I didn’t know anything about SL when I started. Then I thought about the idea of connecting a guitar and microphone to SL and maybe I could ‘find a place beside a fire to play for those who stopped by’,” he says of his first experiences in Second Life. Before he knew it, he had won the mediaculture Virtual Music Award of 2008 for Best Artist.

Rez Days in Second Life: What is the significance? -Pandora Drezelan Reporting...

In my previous article ‘Second Life - An Extension of Real Life or Just A Game?’ I pointed out my reasons regarding my opinion about Second Life being the virtual world that it is to me.
In this article I would like to reflect on the topic of our Second Life Rez Days - our Birthdays within Second Life.

I spoke with friends, Lanai Jarrico, Opal Edenflower and Kio Falconer about their Rez Day experiences and what it means to them. This is their Rez Day stories and views about Second Life.

SL Newser : Interview with Michi Lumin- Bixyl Shuftan

image of Michi Lumin retrieved from slnewser.com
In Second Life, one of the oldest communities is Luskwood, which is also the location of the oldest furry avatar company on the Grid. The four whom started the place, and company, are known as the founders. And probably the most popular of them is the skunkgirl in the top hat, Michi Lumin. Recently, Michi sat down for an interview, and talked about a number of subjects concerning Luskwood, the Grid over the years, and Linden Lab.

SLE/PPM Merger Takes a Turn in a New Direction. Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

Company mergers whether in our real world or in a virtual one, can be complex with many choices to make. The decision makers have to ask themselves some important questions to ensure working or merging with another business or entity is the right thing to do. Is the reputation of the company in good standing with the public? Do both parties have a common goal and can commit to the job requirements, its employees and the community. Some projects, partnership and mergers work, others fall through and new plans are implemented to ensure productivity and positive growth. That is the ultimate goal.

On May 14, 2012 The SL Enquirer announced a merger between Press Pass media; a neutral media network consisting of over 31 media sources and The SL Enquirer; Second Life’s longest running independently owned newspaper. Due to feedback from our members, we are making some small but important modifications to the plans.

RP Culture: Fantasy Avatars- Pandora Drezelan Reporting..

Avatar

Fantasy takes on many forms, it is a genre of fiction that uses magic and other supernatural phenomena, many mythical creatures can be found in the world of fantasy, with all it’s folklore and mystery.

Almost, if not all fantasies in real life can be relived in Second Life, some residents explore the aspects of fantasy occasionally, while others form communities and live the lifestyle to it’s fullest potential, through cos-play and role-play.
COS-PLAY

Cos-play (short for costume play) is a type of performance art in which participants don costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea. Favorite sources include manga and anime, comic books, video games and films.

ROLE-PLAY

Role-playing refers to the changing of one's behavior to assume a role either unconsciously to fill a social role, or consciously to act out an adopted role, role-playing is defined as "the changing of one's behavior to fulfill a social role.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: " SL Bar Association Celebrates its First Annual Law Day Event"- May 19th-June 3rd

On May 19, 2012, the SL Bar Association will kick-off its first annual Law Day event in SL. To highlight the special reach of Second Life around the world, the Justitia Legal Resource Village will celibrate this year's theme No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom with a panel presentation and exhibition drawing attention to the role of courts as protectors of human rights and freedoms around the world. Events will take place May 19-June 3.

"Law Day is a new and exciting prospect for the SL Bar Association and we look forward to reaching across barriers of all kinds to promote the rule of law around the world." noted Sam Courtois, President of the SL Bar Association. Law Day is an annual event, which was originally conceived in 1957 when American Bar Association President Charles Rhynes envisioned a special national day to mark our commitment to the rule of law. The following year, US President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the first Law Day. Law Day was made official in 1961 when the United States Congress issued a joint resolution designating May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day.

As Second Life is a virtual world with a unique ability to break traditional real world barriers, the SL Law Day event has been modified in format in order to reach out to a larger audience.

For a schedule of events, you can visit the Legal Resource Village at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Justitia/126/120/954 or see our Events page listing.

CELEBRATING MOTHERS DAY ON SL -MarriellaAnna resident Reporting...

image borrowed from thinkdrawart.com

Over 70 countries around the world now celebrate their own version of a ‘Mothers day’ and it would seem that Sl too is no exception.

Mothers are important, after all, you only get one and good bad or indifferent all they ask is that you remember them once a year. So, its mother’s day, time for some meticulous planning to prevent the blind panic setting in as you realise you’ve completely forgotten despite the big red circle round May 13th on the calendar and are forced instead to rush to the supermarket to see if you can find an overpriced and wilted bunch of flowers,  ring every restaurant within the next 8 states to see if there is a single seat left left available in any of them or scour every shelf for the last remaining dog eared card and tatty envelope.  Fear no more, this handy guide to mother’s day on sl will leave you well prepared and guilt free.

BREAKFAST IN BED: Start the morning the traditional way by treating your mum/mamma/maman to breakfast in bed. There are a large variety of breakfast items available in sl, and what better way to ingratiate yourself than carefully tromping up the stairs with a laden tray full of assorted goodies. No grubby hands and fear of salmonella or the ensuing mess that you’ll leave behind for your mother to clear up either and everything is beautifully laid out and ready to consume.  Luckily on sl too, nothing ever gets burnt and the toast is always hot.

Starting of a social networking site is something that takes a lot of work. You have to plan the layout, pick the name, and all the features you haven't yet come up with. Snail Races are one of those "only in Second Life" phenomina unique to the grid. Organized by RacerX Gullwing, they usually take place on a track. But once a month during the Relay for Life fundraising season, there are cross-country, or cross-sim races, taking place across numerous sims. The April Cross-Sim race was held on April 28th on the mainland, going past noted locations such as "The Shelter," and ended a few sims away from Abbots Areodrome. And a certain fox reporter was there to cover it.

Reflections through Machinima:

The 20th Anniversary of the 1992 LA Riots...April 29th-May 4th.

I have to admit as much as I advocate machinima as a wonderful storytelling format, I do think one should seriously consider what platform might best serve to present a message or simply reach an audience. In 2009, my book KJLH-FM and the Los Angeles Riots of 1992: Compton's Neighborhood Station in the Aftermath of the Rodney King Verdict (McFarland), I wrote the story of one African-American radio station (owned by Stevie Wonder) and its crew that reported on the civil unrest as it unfolded in front of the broadcast studio.

SL Newser News- SOPA Act Two? CISPA to be Decided in US House as Soon as Today - Bixyl Shuftan Reporting...

Remember the mess over SOPA in December and January? This proposed law had the potential for becoming "The Great Firewall of America," possibly meaning the end of favorite places online such as Youtube, Facebook, and Second Life. Despite a Congress seemingly poised to approve it, opposition to it and it's sister bill PIPA grew in numbers. The backers of SOPA eventually shelved it from a vote, and the opponents had seemingly won.

Akasha talks about her introduction to Second Life and her modeling career:
‘I heard about Second Life on a German radio show. I was curious and downloaded it. I stayed for about a year, but got bored, so I left for three years, only to come back with a bang, and I’ve loved it ever since.
‘In regards to modeling, I’ve learnt to do my own HUDS and about new fashion and styling genres - some of them I ended up loving dearly.

Titanic: Truly ‘A night to remember’- Mariella Anna Reporting...

Although small in comparison to modern cruise ships, in 1912 Titanic stood alone in terms of sheer scale, opulence and luxury. Titanic evokes an age of excess, of unimaginable luxury, quality and obvious displays of wealth and status. It was the  ‘Belle Epoque’ which was to last up until  up until the first world war,  before in Europe at least, class and privilege were fragmented and changed  forever.  In the last moments of the Titanic the division of wealth, and position on the social scale was acutely illustrated by the fact that only 25% of third class passengers survived.

In 1912 the most expensive first-class suite on the Titanic cost $4,350 the staggering equivalent of $75,000 today- remembering tickets were only and rather ironically sold one way.  In comparison, those travelling on a third class ticket were also subjected to a level of luxury they probably had never experienced before, certainly they would have had to invest a lifetime of savings for the crossing, in the hopes of a new life in America.

Having arrived at the Titanic exhibit prior to boarding the ship itself, I was struck by the attention to detail given to create the exhibition centre with its various Titanic artifacts, pictures of the ship during construction and explanatory notes, sculpted china and even a first class menu giving a glimpse of life on board.  A scale mode of the ship in a glass display case gave no clue as to what actually awaited us once we’d boarded.

[Hera and Zeus devotional]

Some weeks ago, I had accidentally come across the school Sacred Cauldron on SL search. The description interested me as it stated that it is a virtual pagan academy. Curious, I asked my editor if I could cover a story on it. Modeling in Second Life- Pandora Drezelan Reporting...

Being a model in Second Life can be a very glamorous lifestyle, but it also involves hard work, dedication, and compromise. Whether you are an experienced or a new and aspiring model, you must learn to be able to accept constructive criticism and sometimes rejection, depending on the situation.
